This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Poetry and Other Publications ( #AtoZChallenge )

#AtoZChallenge 2023 letter P

Plenty of 'P' entries in this post.   I could have found a lot more I'm sure if I had kept on poking around through my possessions, but this is probably enough for the present.

Pride and Prejudice & Co.

Though I purchased a copy of the 1966 release of the Norton Critical Edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice back when I was in college somewhere in the early 1970's, I never read it until about 50 years later when I ordered the mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies from the Quality Paperback Book Club.  Before reading the newer book, I decided to gain better context by reading the original.  Austen seemed too dry and stilted to me back in my college days, but I didn't get where she was coming from until about a third of my way through the book.  I had gotten so bogged down by the nineteenth century style that I didn't realize the book was meant to be funny.  I had been taking it too seriously.  Once I got into the rhythm of the writing I started to enjoy what I was reading.  With an appreciation of the Austen original under my belt, I was able to enjoy the later parody when I read it.  Both are fun books, but Austen's book is definitely the superior literary work.  The zombie book is an entertaining read though.

Pirate Coast by Richard Zacks

Another book club purchase, I liked this book a great deal.   This is an intriguing story about the Barbary Coast pirates and the actions taken by the newly formed United States to make them stop attacking their ships.  A very interesting story that I didn't know much about.  I'd give this book a big five stars for those who like historical non-fiction.  Not exactly what I said in my Amazon review but now I've decided on five stars.

Pot Stories for the Soul by Paul Krassner

Since purchasing this from the Quality Paperback Book Club, I haven't read any of this book.   It's a collection of short anecdotes about you can guess what topic presented in the style of the popular "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series.  I should probably sample a few of the stories.  This looks like a very fast read.

Poetry Collections

The Oxford Book of English Verse edited by Christopher Ricks

This is one of those big anthologies that look nice on the shelf.  It contains poetry we all likely know or remember vaguely in our past educations.  This book will probably stay in pristine condition for a long time to come.  That is, until someone starts reading it.  I tend not to read poetry that often so that someone will probably not be me.

101 Famous Poems compiled by Roy J Cook

This collection published in 1958 was given to my second wife and I as a gift in 1991.  From the inscription inside the front cover, knowing who gave it to us, I'm sure it was a book they had probably obtained somewhere around the publication date.  The book is in remarkably good condition considering its age.  I guess the givers of the gift read it as much as I have.  It will likely remain in good condition.  That's not to say the poetry is bad, but I likely have all of these poems in other collections.

Walt Whitman:  Selected Poems

Somewhere I think I have a copy of Whitman's Leaves of Grass, but since I didn't see that book anywhere in my search I decided to go for this one.   Any decent library of poetry probably should include something by Whitman.  Many of his poems can be found in some of my collections of poetry by various authors, but I think a complete volume of his work is a better representation to have in a collection.

These, My Singing Words by Marvin Eugene Girard

Marvin Girard, his wife, and daughter were circus performers in fifties and sixties.  Their specialties were rope-spinning and juggling.  In 1976 I visited the family at their home in Owosso Michigan while I was touring with the Ken Griffin Magic Show.  If I remember correctly, they had worked at some point in the past with the Griffins. At the time of the visit, Marvin had recently published this book of poetry about circus life.  That being a point of interest for me and my family, I purchased a copy of the book for myself as well as one for my father.  Mr. Girard signed my copy which I still have on my bookshelf.  This small book of poetry is likely kind of rare.

Yvonne Lewis

Many of you likely know of Yvonne and maybe even have some of her poetry books.  She writes with simplicity and clarity so you don't have to delve and dissect to figure out what her poems are saying.  They say what's on Yvonne's mind.   Yvonne Lewis has a special connection with the A to Z Challenge in that she was the very first person to sign up to join me in my first Challenge in 2010.  In 2012 I had the opportunity to spend a day with Yvonne when she came to visit Los Angeles while on a U.S. vacation which I wrote about here.  Yvonne kindly send me copies of her books Written from the Heart and Negative v Positive.

If you read Pride and Prejudice, did you think it was funny?   Are there any classics (or other books) that you bought many years ago but haven't read until recently?  Do you read much poetry?

Dream Lover ( #BOTB )

The Blogging from A to Z April Challenge sign-ups opened today (March 1st).  Visit the site to sign up for the earliest spot on the list, but no matter when you sign, I hope you'll join us for the 10th annual A to Z!!!!

#AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary badge

Yes!  The 10th Annual Alphabet Challenge!

If you don't know what I'm talking about then you must be new here.  I won't explain in this post, but if you want more info you can find it at the A to Z Blog site.  Since today is when the sign up list opens and it's going to be the 10th annual Challenge, I thought I'd dedicate this Battle of the Bands round to the first person who signed up for that first A to Z Challenge in 2010.

That person is Yvonne Lewis of Nashville Cats Poetry by Yvonne.  Yvonne has faithfully contributed to every Challenge since that first one.  Those who know Yvonne from her blogs will probably understand this Battle that follows and how it applies to her:  It has something to do with her favorite musical artist.

Now, if you've also been doing the Challenge since the beginning then please let us know in the comments so we can honor your membership in this exclusive club of bloggers.  And even if you've only done the Challenge a few times then that's an achievement to be proud of.

So without further ado, let's get on with the Battle...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some blogs there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle on the 1st of the month.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Dream Lover

This popular song was written and first recorded by Bobby Darin.  Since Bobby Darin always tends to win any match he's in then we'll forego his more well known version in order to present versions you may have not heard before.  I think I've offered a good contrast of styles.  Take a listen and tell us your favorite in the comment section.

Daniel O'Donnell   "Dream Lover" (2005)

This popular artist comes from Ireland but has fans throughout the world.  Recording since 1983, O'Donnell has a long list of best-selling albums and chart hits behind him.  His recording of "Dream Lover" is very similar to Bobby Darin's style.

The Dollyrots    "Dream Lover" (2010)

For a complete contrast comes the Florida group The Dolly Rots.  This band formed in 2000 as a response to Bush winning the election.  The reasoning was that the world was now going to end so why not start a band.  Sounds like logical reasoning to me.  In any case, the band has continued to tour and release recordings and the world is still here.  Now let's rock...

Time to Vote!

Come on and be a dream--Vote for your favorite version!   Have some fun with us.   What's your favorite between these two choices?   Which song version do you like best? You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

Winner of this Battle Announced on Friday March 8

I think I'd better buckle down and get my A to Z posts underway.  I haven't even started yet, let alone come up with an exact theme.  I'm thinking, I'm thinking!

Are you going to join us for the 10th Annual A to Z?   Have you participated in any of the past A to Z Challenges?   What would you do if you received confirmation that the world was going to end soon?

Learn and Live #atozchallenge

learning
learning (Photo credit: Anne Davis 773)

The traditional thought suggests that we should learn from our life experiences.  That certainly makes a lot of sense to me.  In our life journey we all make mistakes now and then.  If we don't allow those mistakes to be learning experiences then we are missing out.

However, learning and living goes both ways.  When we learn something new we should try to apply it to our own lives when it is applicable to what we are doing.   Many marketing lessons are learned from experience, but there are also many resources for learning the marketing tricks others have learned.

Find good books or blogs on the subject of marketing and promotion to see what the experts have to say on that matter.  Start applying what you learn to your daily life.   Ask questions about the things you don't understand.   Work with others in their promotions to see what you can use for yourself later.

Learning and then living while using what you've learned will help you attain your goals more efficiently.   If others have already blazed trails that makes your journey easier then use those trails.

Some Poetry about Life's Lessons

Here's a bit of A to Z Challenge history for you.   When I put out my Challenge to bloggers in 2010 to blog with me from A to Z, the first person to take the challenge was poetry blogger Yvonne Lewis who blogs at Welcome to My World of Verse.   She's been a dear friend ever since.

She's back again for this year's Challenge so I hope you'll visit her and while you're there join as one of her followers.  She's had some blog problems but hopefully this new one is here to say.  She's got some wonderful A to Z entries again this year.

And just in time for April Yvonne Lewis has released her third volume of poetry.   Distribution in the U.S. is being worked on.   I'm particularly stoked about this release because I'm on the cover!   That's me with Yvonne at the bottom of the cover.  Plus I've written a few words about Yvonne in the book's Introduction.  Wow, it's so cool to be sharing the stage with this poet whom I've admired for so long.  Go Yvonne!

Do you learn well from the mistakes you make in your life?    Have you taken any classes in marketing?    Do you know about Yvonne Lewis?

#IWSG --Secrets

First Wed of Every Month First Wednesday of the month means another

edition of Alex J Cavanaugh's Insecure Writers

Support Group.   You can discover more

 participants here.

Some time ago when I was out gallivanting hither and yon, YVONNE LEWIS at The Written Word of Yvonne Lewis  nominated me for the Super Blogger Award. One stipulation is that I  have to reveal a secret about myself.  Gosh!  What secrets do I have left and are any of those things that I'd be revealing here?

Many bloggers stay pretty mum about their private lives and histories.  Some go so far as to not even put up pictures of themselves.  I've never been that secretive on my blog.  Many revelations about Arlee Bird can be found in the pages of my blogs, including my real identity.  Is that a good thing?

Typically a published book will have an author bio and promo photo on the cover.  Well known authors will answer many personal questions in interviews or reveal personal data in memoir pieces.  In this age a fairly quick computer search can turn up many details about a person's life if we plug in the correct basic information.

But secrets?  What about secrets?  Some things perhaps are meant to stay secret and yet some celebrities (and even not so famous folk) seem to have no qualms with tell all exposĂ©s about themselves.  Even in my most personal blog posts I might have been going deeper into myself than I should have.

Does anybody really care what I've done or what I think?  I'm curious about other people so I enjoy reading those sorts of things.   There's always the potential that some delicate bit of information might come back to haunt me.   I think of politicians who have had past histories revealed to create big problems for them.  Or there are things people have said that become less acceptable down the road when they are revealed in the public airwaves.

I don't plan on running for politics and I doubt whether I would ever become famous enough to have my past become a deterring factor for whatever I might want to do.  It's not like I have horrible secrets to hide, but there are certainly things I've done or said that were mistakes or might be misunderstood.   And there are those things that I don't have a problem with that might be a hindrance for me in certain circumstances because of what others might think.  You just never really know sometimes do you.

Secrets?  I guess it's good to be careful about blabbing too much.  One of my secrets is that even though I'm always revealing things about myself, I do have a fear (concern?) about telling too much.   How much is too much?

Thank you Yvonne for thinking of me for this award.   I guess I revealed a secret.

How open are you about your life?   Have you ever revealed something that you wish you hadn't?  Has your past ever caught up with you to create an uncomfortable situation?  Do you have a secret you want to reveal here?

Meet Arlee Bird's A to Z Ambassadors (Part 2)

In my post of last Friday, I introduced two of my Ambassadors--my team who volunteered to help me patrol the A to Z sign up list and spread good will throughout the Challenge participants.  Today I bring you the other three members of my team.

Yvonne Lewis

Arlee Bird meets Yvonne Lewis in Los Angeles in 2012

When I first started the A to Z Challenge in 2010, I had nearly 100 bloggers sign on within the week I had announced my intentions to blog through the alphabet.   The very first to join up was Yvonne Lewis who now blogs at The Written Word of Yvonne Lewis.  Later, Yvonne would become one of the handful of bloggers I have met in person when she vacationed in Los Angeles last year.

Yvonne is from the United Kingdom and began blogging in 2006.  She has had two books of her delightful poetry published:   Negative V Positive, with a portion of the book blurb written by her idol, Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell, and Written from the Heart, with part of the blurb written by A to Z co-host Alex J. Cavanaugh

Jaimie Ramsey

Jaimie Ramsey and her husband
Jaimie has been blogging at Living in the Light since late 2010.  Her blog title comes from the Bible verses 1 John 1:7-9.   She's not ashamed to proclaim her Christian faith and typically blogs about God, faith, and family.  Please be sure to visit Jaimie and give her your support and encouragement.

Alana Garrigues

image.jpeg         Alana Garrigues at Writercize is a Challenge veteran.  She is a freelance writer, journalist, and all around creative hand at all things writing and otherwise.  Alana played a big role in promoting last year's Challenge and she was a natural for me to call on to assist me with this year's Challenge.

I'll be visiting with Alana and Nutschell "The Writing Nut" on March 30 when I go speak to their writers group about blogging and of course the A to Z Challenge.  Here is an excerpt from Alana's blog:

I have very special news for bloggers in the Los Angeles metro area. Lee (Arlee Bird) agreed to be the guest speaker at the Children's Book Writers of Los Angeles (CBW-LA) March meeting, just before the A to Z Challenge kicks off! On March 30 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., he will speak to a group of writers and bloggers at the El Segundo Library about the merits of blogging and social networking as it pertains to the author's platform.
CBW-LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring writers on the road to publication. It is the brainchild of another local mastermind, the fabulous Nutschell Windsor of The Writing Nut, and she dedicates countless hours and passion to sharing her knowledge of the publishing industry with writers, aspiring and published alike.

For more info about this workshop visit Alana's blog at:
http://writercize.blogspot.com/2013/03/blogging-with-bird-atozchallenge-host.htm

You can also visit Alana at:

For local news and writing updates: www.facebook.com/AlanaGarriguesWrites

My sincerest thank you to the entire Ambassador Team!

Do you know of anyone who has not signed up for the Challenge yet?    You perhaps?  The final week of sign ups is ahead of us.  Be sure to tell anyone who  might be interested in joining us.  Also spread the word on social media.  Hopefully we can match the 1800 we had for last year.  We have about 500 to go to reach that goal.   Let's go A to Zingers!

Ask Arlee: Can You Help With a Computer Problem?

Logo used from the start of the Chrome project...
Logo used from the start of the Chrome project until March 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
For my first official entry of my Ask Arlee series (this title seemed to get a good reaction so I'll stick with it), I'm going to field a question from our poetess/blogger friend Yvonne Lewis from Poetry From the Heart.   In fact Yvonne's questions will warrant a two part answer.   Next week I'll continue with some things that are making me as insecure as Yvonne is about Google Chrome.  This week I'll address some more general possible solutions to computer problems.

After a couple of poetic laments on her blog about some of her recent problems with Chrome and the internet in general, Yvonne came to me with the following e-mails:

Hi Lee, I read Jacks blog post and joined as a follower, plus left a message to you.   I logged off last night and all was well.today, however your blog for the ambassadors has gone plus a few posts I put on.  I have been told it is Chrome by various pc repairmen I have had look at my pc.  IE doesn't take blogger anymore so can't change to that search engine.  All was well until Google changed over earlier. I hope to have things up and running for A to Z as I have it already done. Enjoy your week-end. Yvonne.
Hi Lee after a horrendous weekend with chrome I was about to call it a day, they kept putting a warning sign stating my profile could not be opened and I would lose some things on my blog, however I decided to look again today and all seems ok except for 2 things. One I lost all my followers, Sorry for trouble caused. Take care. Yvonne.

My Reply To Yvonne's Concerns:

First of all, Yvonne, no trouble.  Glad to be of help.  And you are helping me provide content for my blog.   By the way, I got Yvonne's permission to use her questions for this and next week's posts.

Interesting that you should be having these problems with your PC and Chrome. I have been having very similar issues. I have not only spent hours in the past couple of weeks trying to fix them, but this past Monday and Tuesday I was nearly totally down both those days.

Computer problems can be very frustrating for those who are not equipped with the proper knowledge of how to fix them.   That probably includes a good many of us.   If we're not trained to do computer stuff, it can be scary to try to start delving into our computers.

Paying someone to fix problems can be very expensive and even that doesn't always solve the problem.   You can shell out a big hourly fee if you can afford to and that's often the least time-consuming remedy.   My late step-father poured hundreds into his computers and often ended up with the same problems or new ones.   More than once his solution was to just buy a new computer, which solved the old problems until new ones came up for the replacement machine.   It was frustrating for him I know, but living a couple thousand miles away I wasn't much help to him.  Not that I would have been that much help had I been there.

In lieu of paying someone to fix our problems, it's always nice if we can find a friend or family member to help.   Then, if we don't have that option, it's up to us to fix the problem.  That can be scary and may not always provide the fix we need, but before throwing money to the wind we may want to at least do some of our own research and try a few things.

I haven't been using Internet Explorer for blogging lately, but I think you may just have an issue with settings. When I  just looked to see my blog on IE , everything looked normal and so did some other blogs I checked.   On yours only the background of your blog comes up.   You must have something set wrong somewhere, but I'm not sure what it is.  Maybe a reader has a suggestion.

I know it can be very intimidating to attempt to make these fixes yourself, but I'm finding that a lot of it is pretty easy to do once you've figured out how to do it. I for one can't afford to be taking my computer to get repaired when something happens so I go the do it yourself route as much as I can.  And I'm not talking about grabbing the tool box and dismantling the machine.  Just stuff you can do by carefully searching and clicking.

Here are some ideas that you might want to try to become better educated on the computer:

  • Check Google or other search engines to find answers to your problems. Enter what your problem might be such as "Computer running slow" or "My blog has disappeared" or whatever your problem may be. You might also try wording the problem such as "I can't find my blog in Internet Explorer" or "Blog doesn't look right on Chrome". You'll probably find some answers to nearly everything you put in. You will want to look at a few solutions since some just want you to buy something or download something you may not want, but the answers are usually found there. Time consuming? You bet! Complicated? Sometimes.   Useful? Eventually almost always.
  • Buy a good basic book on computing like PC for Dummies or something of that nature. You'll find some excellent topics covered for the basic user. Make sure you get the most recent editions. Time, patience, and thoughtfulness may be necessary.
  • See if there is a senior center near you that offers this type of assistance at no charge. Near me there is a senior center that has classes that are free for those over 50 and has computers for the use of patrons and provides knowledgeable persons to assist when help is needed. They might be able to offer advice.
  • For those under 50, classes may be offered at the local high school, community college, or elsewhere for free or a nominal charge.  There are frequently classes offered for basic computer skills including maintenance and simple repair.
  • In your area there might be a computer club that will allow you to connect with more experienced users who are willing to help.  You might find someone who can help, learn a few things for yourself, and even make a few new friends.
  • YouTube, Google, and many other online resources offer some great video tutorials on how to do things.
  • If your computer is still covered by a warranty, or if you have some kind of coverage on your computer or any auxiliary equipment or software, or you think you have an internet service provider problem; contact a phone support line affiliated with whatever you suspect could be the culprit.  Be prepared to spend a couple of hours on the phone while they walk you through various procedures.  I've done this more than once and it can be very helpful in locating the source of a problem and showing you how to repair it.

These are a few suggestions that I can offer now and there are many more if you look around.  The bottom line is that it takes time, effort, and the will to do it in order to learn computer skills.  You don't have to become an expert, but just attain enough knowledge to update, maintain, and do the minor fixes required to keep your computer running well.

Beyond that be prepared to pay someone else.   I hope you find someone you can trust if that's the option you choose.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out or if you have any other questions.  Next week I'll address the issues of Google Chrome as my entry in
Alex J Cavanaugh's Insecure Writers Support Group.  Yvonne is not the only one feeling a bit frustrated about Chrome.

Do you have any suggestions about dealing with computer problems?  Do you know any fixes to the computer problems Yvonne might be having?    If you use Chrome, have you been having problems lately?

When You Have a lot you want to say, you think of more stuff to say

Woody, Cliff and Norm on The Simpsons
Woody, Cliff and Norm on The Simpsons (Photo credit: Wikipedia) (This image has virtually nothing to do with ths blog post.
My Blog Runneth Over

There are so many ideas lined up for discussion on my post planner that I sometimes wonder whether I'll get around to all of the topics I'd like to cover.   And wouldn't you know it, the more I plan on saying here on this blog, the more new stuff that pops into my head that makes me feel like I want to cover here.  The ideas never seem to stop.   I just don't get it when people say they don't know what to blog about.

If you need any help coming up with blog ideas maybe you should come to me.   Perhaps I should start a new blog that each week provides a list of things to blog about.  I'd shorten my list and give someone else the chance to talk about the items on the list.  On the other hand, strike that idea.  I don't need another blog to worry about and you probably don't want to be writing about some of my crazy ideas.

In any case,  I still have plans on continuing with my tirades about jobs, workers, and management.  Coming soon I also will be giving my side of the profanity issue that Bridget Straub started stirring the pot with on Wednesday.   If you didn't see her post check it out and definitely read through the comments.  The readers really pulled through with some good opining on that topic.  You all are the best!

However, in this present post I'd like to take a breather to make a few mentions and pave the way for some things coming up....

Wherefore Art Thou, Yvonne?

Someone I might have included in the "Miss You" blogfest if I had done it is Yvonne Lewis.   Now Yvonne is back with a new poetry blog.   She's starting from scratch so she'll need you to sign up as a follower again.  Please show our sweet lady of verse--our English Rose--your support.  I know she'll appreciate it.  You can find her blog at Yvonne's World of Poetry.

Baby Faces Blogfest

Trisha at Word + Stuff is hosting her first ever blogfest--the Baby Faces Blogfest on Dec. 2 and 3.  All you have to do is post a picture of yourself as a baby and/or tell a story from when you were a baby.   I couldn't resist this one so I'm joined in for the fun.  It just so happens that a few years ago my mother sent me a mini photo album of my baby pictures and I keep it next to my writing desk.  You'll have to check out my entries.  Hope you'll join us.

Also on December 2nd when Trisha puts up her blogiversary celebration post (hence the blogfest), she will be giving away a little prize (your choice of a book she's selected, or some other book, from the Book Depository). More details about that on the day of her post.

Let's Embarrass Alex Day

And let us not forget the "Cheers, Cavanaugh Blog Fest" coming up between December 10th and 12th.   I'm signed up for that one as well and if you aren't then you might be among  few who aren't.  Over one hundred of us signed up so far so don't be left out.  Besides, Alex will be obligated to go through every one of these posts himself so let's keep him busy.  I hear he has nothing else to do and is really bored.

Then of course there's the Insecure Writer's Support Group coming up next Wednesday.  Yeah, I'm doing that again along with a zillion other people.

Hey--I really need a blog fest break.  I keep saying I'm going to stop for a while and then something really cool sounding comes up and I'm there.  I've got to rest up for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.

Which speaking of Blogging from A to Z, the A to Z Blog is looking for guest posts again.  Do you have something interesting to say about last year's challenge or tips about the upcoming challenge.   Let us know if you are interested.  It's a great way for you to get some exposure and call attention to your blog.

Watch This Space!

Baby pictures, insecurities, Alex adulation, and more controversy (or as I prefer--thought-provoking topics) are coming your way right here at Tossing It Out.  Busy blog times as we all head into a busy holiday season.  Maybe I should take the holiday weeks off.  But I have all these darn topics piling up.

Which blog fests are you participating in?   Do you ever have more ideas than you know what to do with?    Are you ready for some more debate topics?  What has been your favorite topic so far on this blog?
