I would have loved deep diving, once upon a time. My ears, though, had other plans. 14 feet used to be their limit; now, 8 feet is about as far as my ears are willing to go without causing me pain. I've tried SCUBA, and it was fun, but the belt is far too bulky and without it, I just pop to the surface. I would like to try the new kind of snorkeling, where you are sort of tethered to a raft with an air hose, but nothing else.
ReplyDeleteI am more afraid of fire than of drowning, and more afraid of car crashes or falling off a cliff (or, God forbid, falling off a cliff IN a car - you don't really want to be with me and my anxiety on a mountain road with no guardrails). Ironically, our "family curse" seems to be flooding on a sunny day - but that's just been messy, not really life-threatening.
Holly, "flooding on a sunny day" sounds intriguing. Messy is bad, but better than dying.

We lived on the 14th floor of a 21-story condo in Daytona Beach when I was a teen. I came home from class one sunny day and called my parents at work. "The apartment's flooded."
Delete"How bad?"
"I could do the backstroke from the kitchen to your bedroom." These were connected by a long hallway from one end of the apartment to another - and in between was my bedroom and a hall closet.
Turned out, there was a break in a pipe in the hall closet and that pipe connected to the water tank on the roof that supplied - everyone.
Now that's some weird flooding. How'd it go floor all the people living below your floor?
DeleteExcellent question - I don't remember (meaning it wasn't bad enough we had to move out!), but I think they got it mostly contained to our floor and drained before it did TOO much damage below us.
DeleteJamie (jannghi.blogspot.com): I could never take such a plunge (no pun intended) either.
ReplyDeleteI'm no great fan of the water, either. With research, I run the risk of diving a little too far.
ReplyDeleteI've definitely gotten in over my head in research rabbit holes that turned into dwarven caves :-) @samanthabwriter from

I love getting lost in research - or just surfing fun facts. I didn't even realize what month it is (A-Z)! I'll be by as often as possible ;-)
ReplyDeletediedre, trivia and fun facts gets me every time.

Great to visit your blog again; you have changed April for me forever, lol! I love your entry for D. I'm afraid I'm a surface splasher, both when it comes to water and research... but diving deep into something I'm interested in... a writing project, a knitting project... or even just a good book... sometimes I need to remind myself to come up for air! See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteDepth is my theme for this entire year. I love the water, and I love to swim, but deep diving is a term that became popular in business terms in the early 1990s as a look a way to look at ideas and information. My A to Z is looking at every definition and idea of "depth": the abstract and the concrete. I hope you will come dive in.
ReplyDeleteHubby is a scuba diver, I don't even like snorkeling (hate my head under water). I have always enjoyed research but admit that the older I get, the shallower I dive into it. LOL!

I learnt to dive only because I used to think that it was a scary activity. I'm glad I learnt and got over that fear a little but it's not my favourite thing to do because I have a fear of sea monsters LOL
ReplyDeleteAh, haven’t even learned to swim yet…But I can float with an inner tube! And kind of swim!
ReplyDeleteTony, I finally learned to swim when I was in college and had to take a PE course and that seemed pretty practical. At the end of two quarters of swimming I could swim--or at least keep my head above water. Still not very confident though. I haven't been in a pool in a long long time.

I love water and have been snorkelling but I would never, ever deep dive in water but, deep diving in research, through Google, YouTube and my books. I love checking out things in my books from films of course), art, history…
