This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Dust ( #BOTB )

Here again in a sense.  Isn't the modern computer age amazing!  Later in the month I'll have something more to say, but for now it's that musical extravaganza that we know as...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Dust

During the month of April I was reading the book Eye Mind: The Saga of Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators, The Pioneers of Psychedelic Sound  by Paul Drummond (which I wrote about on my E post for the A to Z).  During this time I went back to immerse myself in the band's music and discovering many cover versions of their songs.  I've done several blog posts in the past on a couple of my sites and even used their song "Slip Inside This House" in a 2015 BOTB match.

Of late I've had a particular fascination with the song "Dust" from The Elevators album Easter Everywhere.  I think this is such a beautiful song with thoughtful lyrics.  It's almost like a hymn.  Since this is a unique song by a group that most people haven't heard of I will offer the original version.  Please save your votes for the two artists that follow this first video.  So listen if you wish or just skip on down to the first of the two competing videos.

Don't vote on this first video please!  It's the original version for comparison if you wish.

13th Floor Elevator   "Dust"   (1967)

Vote on the Following please!

Brian Jonestown Massacre  "Dust"  (2015)

I couldn't resist using a band with this name.  They're described as "a musical project and band" who have been around since 1990 with a slew of albums behind them. Sounds good to me. The sound of this version is growing on me as I listen to it more and I get where they're coming from.  I think it's an interesting cover of the song.

TW   "Dust"  (2021)

I don't know anything about this artist, but he really has a lot of videos on his channel and they all look essentially like this video.  His performance reminds me of some of Neil Young's work.  I think he takes a nicely peaceful creative approach to the song.

Time to Vote!

Dust off your musical appreciation skills and open your mind   Just listen and see what you think.  Which song version do you prefer?
Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

  2. I will vote for Massacres because I even like it better than the original. The piano version was getting on my nerves to be honest.

  3. The original song and band is an introduction. I have to agree with Birgit, I prefer the first cover better than it. The second rendition lost me almost from the start. I'm giving my vote to Brian Jonestown Massacre. Have a bandtastic day, dear friend!

  4. Hi Lee -
I must say that I am "not feelin' it" on this song or any of the bands. The original is better than the covers, the Massacre is far superior the the last guy (don't quit your day job of washing dishes,) and - hyperbolically - I would pay money to not go to a concert with any of them. So I vote the first cover, but without enthusiasm.

    1. 6-gun, to feel this song you probably have to listen several times. In the past few weeks as we have been traveling I have been periodically playing this song as we drive. Now it's grown on my wife to the point that she understands it and likes it quite well.

I might pay to see the Elevators, but mostly because most of them are now dead.

      A sad vote for Massacre.

  5. Hi Lee!
Once again, you've introduced a song I've never heard of and bands with all new sounds - amazing! I like Brian Jonestown Massacre the best, not as gloomy as the rest ;-)

    1. Diedre, if you listen to the lyrics the song is not gloomy at all. I'm loving the message of it.

I'll need to add your new site link to my list when I get home from my trip.

      A vote for Massacre

  6. LEE ~

Well,... I... Uhm... I guess I'm gonna kinda-sorta echo Sixgun's comment. (You can think of my comment as dust scraped off the same desert rock.)

I actually WANTED to vote for TW because I much preferred the sparse, lighter piano arrangement to the ponderous, depressingly dead-weight drone of MASSACRE, but damn that TW dude can't even sing as well as my brother... who can't sing a lick.

So, I guess by default, I'm voting for the first cover.

    1. STMcC, this is a difficult song that I realize most people will have a difficult time to appreciate and are unwilling to listen intensely enough to fully get. And then due to the nature of it I'd say a lot of folks will rapidly dismiss it as something they don't like. But I do that a lot with my BOTB choices. I tend to get musically bored with so many songs in the mainstream and prefer to delve into those lesser known realms of music, But that's me.

I had the same first impression as you about TW's voice and all, but then I went back to it. I like what he did with the song. Not perfection for sure, but that's what gives it humanity.

      A vote for Massacre.

  7. The original band's name is familiar, but not the song. It has an ethereal quality! I agree with Stephen, here. TW's vocals were hurting my ears, so I'll have to go with Massacre, even though I preferred the piano.

    1. Debbie, 13th Floor Elevators are an iconic band that has influenced so many rock artists but never caught on with the average music fan. Too bad because they really did record some excellent songs in their short span together.

      Another vote for Massacre.

  8. Hi Lee enjoyed the MASSACRE version.
    Hope you are well.
I was told I have cataracts in both eyes but hope to visit from time to time while awaiting treatment.
Hope all is well with you and family/

  10. Another vote for Massacre. They massacred the song, but not as badly as TW, and that by default makes Massacre the winner for me.
