This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Did somebody really say that?: Top Ten Horror/Science Fiction Movie Quotes Blogfest

Today I'm participating in Jeremy iZombie's and Ellie Garratt's Top Ten Horror/Science Fiction Movie Quotes Blogfest .

Here is my mission and I chose to accept it:
Quote your top ten most memorable lines from your favourite horror and science fiction movies. Do ten of each or make your top ten a mix of both. It’s up to you.
I'm going to do a mix of ten.  I'm terrible at remembering things like this so I'm going to have to think of some of the movies I really liked and see if I can Google some quotes.  Ellie said I could do that and that's what made me sign up.  Here are my lines:

1.   "They're coming to get you, Barbara."   Night of the Living Dead (1968)  This one I was able to remember on my own.  A favorite line I used to use to scare my kids.

2.   "Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future."
Plan 9 From Outer Space (1958).   This is only the first line.  I can't quote the entire script here.  It's full of great quotes.  The film was directed by the great Ed Wood, the genius of mediocrity.

3.  "Quick, get her to a doctor. And send the clowns in."     Circus of Horrors (1960)   Okay already, it's a circus movie for gosh sakes!

4.   "It's people. Soylent Green is made out of people."    Soylent Green (1973)  No-o-o-o!  Not that!

5.   "Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"   Planet of the Apes (1968)  Charlton Heston  was such a badass in a whole string of science fiction films in the late 60s and early 70s.

6.  Dr. Gavin:  No - it's still alive. But it's changed into a - well, is it a plant or an animal?

     Hank Green: It's both?
Dr. Gavin: It's a giant protozoa!
The Horror of Party Beach (1964)  This movie is really bad.  It's just an excuse to put a bunch of young people in bathing suits add in some motorcycle action and feature a surf rock band.  The monster is ridiculous and so is the script.

7.   "There's nothing like eating under the open sky... even if it is radioactive."    Panic in the Year Zero! (1962)   Ah yes, the all-American family having a picnic after nuclear destruction.

8.    "I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going."   2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)   Now tell me, anyone who's seen this movie, don't you sometimes hear HAL's voice in your head?   Or is it just me?

9.   "They gave me an expandable sarong... Army ingenuity!"   The Amazing Colossal Man (1957)  After a certain point you just can't find things to wear in the big and tall department.

10.  "I was continuing to shrink, to become... what? The infinitesimal? What was I? Still a human being? Or was I the man of the future? If there were other bursts of radiation, other clouds drifting across seas and continents, would other beings follow me into this vast new world? So close - the infinitesimal and the infinite. But suddenly, I knew they were really the two ends of the same concept. The unbelievably small and the unbelievably vast eventually meet - like the closing of a gigantic circle. I looked up, as if somehow I would grasp the heavens. The universe, worlds beyond number, God's silver tapestry spread across the night. And in that moment, I knew the answer to the riddle of the infinite. I had thought in terms of man's own limited dimension. I had presumed upon nature. That existence begins and ends in man's conception, not nature's. And I felt my body dwindling, melting, becoming nothing. My fears melted away. And in their place came acceptance. All this vast majesty of creation, it had to mean something. And then I meant something, too. Yes, smaller than the smallest, I meant something, too. To God, there is no zero. I still exist!"     The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957).    This is one of my all time favorite movie quotes from a movie I truly love.   It's a long one, but as it was in the movie it's an appropriate quote to use in closing.

Have you seen any of these movies?   Do you have a favorite line from a horror or science fiction movie?

  2. Interesting movie line choices, Arlee. Especially the one about the family having a picnic amidst the backdrop of radioactivity.

  7. He he he these are all hilarious! :))
I myself prefer quotes from historical films, especially 300 and ELIZABETH THE GOLDEN AGE :)

  8. Great list....#4 has totally been spoiled so many times for me that, without having seen or even knowing the movie, I know all about the 'people'. That must be one twisted movie.

  9. I've seen most of those movies! (Does that surprise you?) Although I saw Plan 9 with the help of Riff Trax and the MST3K guys.

  10. Interesting list including some movies I had forgotten about. And yes, HAL's voice does stay with you. :)

  12. Incredible Shrinking Man, now there's an oldie. I used to love watching that one when I was a kid.

  13. The first and the fifth I'm familiar with. The rest I've only heard of. I like your choices, though. They're insightful.

  14. Love the Planet of the Apes one - It's such a great moment! :)

  15. Night of the Living Dead still scares the crap out of me.

I have not seen Plan 9. From the quote, it is a *must see* for me now.

  16. BOID ~
Ha! Congratulations on your choice quote from "Plan 9 From Outer Space" - one of my all-time Top 25 favorite movies.

I'll bet I could have composed a list using 10 bad (great) quotes all from "Plan 9."

Have you ever seen the one-hour biopic on Ed Wood called "Look Back In Angora"? Gosh, I love that thing! Love it almost as much as I love Ed's own movies. It's narrated by Gary Owens, so you can already imagine what "seriousness" the movie approaches its subject with.

But really, don't you think that calling Ed Wood "the genius of mediocrity" is overestimating his singular talent? I mean, if Ed's movies actually rose to the level of "mediocrity" I wouldn't be the Ed Wood fan that I am! I generally refer to him as "Hollywood's Horrible Hack".

Man, I loves me some Ed Wood movies!

  17. You have some quotes I recognise and other you dragged in from the left-field. Science fiction is so broad spectrum and then trying to add Horror in to the mix too. That made the choice very wide. All your quotes were interesting.

  18. I'd have to say that numbers 4,5 and 10 I remember very well! Soylent Green just freaked me out when I saw it years ago, I loved that movie. And my favorite part from Planet of the Apes was the very ending when they showed part of what was left of the Statue of Liberty! I remember the eerie feeling that it gave me!! Love Di ♥

  20. Loved these quotes. Particularly from Plan 9 and Soylent Green. Ed Wood was certainly a genius at what he did. My fave quote from PLan 9 is "Now don't you worry. The saucers are up there, the graveyard is out there. But I'll be locked up safely in there."

  21. I"ve seen that Planet of the Apes quote a lot on this blogfest! I have seen the new one, but not the old one. I have also seen a lof of 2001 quotes- that is one messed up movie. I remember watching it when I was little with my parents.

  22. Some of my students watched part of Soylent Green in their Advanced Placement Environment and Ecology class. It was cool to see a new generation freaked out by that movie.

  23. I haven't seen all the movies on your list, I'll have to go check these out!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I can't believe I left out the Night of the living dead quote.

  25. Oh wow! Your list ROCKS! Plan 9 From Outer Space... yay! And I had forgotten that whole speech from The Incredible Shrinking Man for decades and you just brought it all back to me... how I'd been afraid but this speech was strangely comforting. Thanks!

  26. Lee-

Well we both quoted Chuck Heston (when you've seen "Apes" as many times as I have, calling him Charlton is just too formal), and we both had quotes from 2001.

Soylent Green was one I'd forgotten-that was a good one!

And I caught the Mission Impossible allusion in your lead-in...

  27. I haven't seen any of these movies but I was familiar with a couple of the quotes. #3 made me laugh. Love it!

  28. An impressive list Lee...I like the quotes, though I've only heard of half of the movies, and only seen 3 of them.

  29. I love your choice of quotes. The one from Circus of Horrors gave me a chuckle. And Soylent Green is a brilliant classic.

  30. Awesome; so many older movies.

  31. I've never seen Plan 9 From Outer Space, but I've heard great things about it. Unique list with some great classic movies quoted.

  32. A big thanks to all who stopped by to comment. I'm making my rounds to all of your sites. These are mostly movies I grew up with so many of you may be too young to know them as they are no longer common TV fare like they used to be.
PLAN 9 is notable for how bad it is--that's what now makes it so great. If you watch it expecting to see a great movie be forewarned that it is so bad that it's funny. I highly recommend the Tim Burton film ED WOOD starring Johnny Depp--it is a great film about the director of PLAN 9.

  33. For me the most memorable line and moment in Planet of the Apes is the ending when Heston is cursing mankind as the camera pulls back to reveal the Statue of Liberty half buried in the sand. But the movie that has stayed with me the most was The Incredible Shrinking Man. Saw it once when I was about six and I've been freaked out by spiders ever since.

  35. I love the obscurity of your list! (well, obscure to me, anyhow...) I've seen Planet of the Apes - great quote! I may have seen Soylent Green, or parts of it...at any rate, I knew it was "people". The others I just might have to add to my Netflix list. :) Thanks for sharing!

  36. Linda -- Shrinking Man remake is supposedly coming in 2012. Hope they don't botch it.

    iZombie --Thanks! Enjoyed doing it.

    Heather -- Thanks.

Donea --The list is not that obscure to someone who grew up with these films. They're just a bit too old for you to know since they don't get shown much anymore.

  37. Yes, I do hear Hal's voice in my head from time to time. So creepy! And though I've never seen the movie, that last quote is really impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I remember when you used to scare us with the #1 quote. Love you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Margo -- I wonder if they'll use a similar quote in the 2012 remake? I kind of doubt it.

Emilee -- I used to like to scare you girls didn't I. Love you too!

  40. When HAL's voice enters your head, just sing "Daisy Bell."
