This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Catching Up and Clearing the Air

halloween

First of all:   Happy Halloween!  A little over three years ago this blog started out as a Halloween blog so this day holds special significance in Tossing It Out history.   It didn't take long for me to change the direction of my thematic content and I'm glad I did.  Yet I must acknowledge the season and give credit to the inspiration that initially got me underway in blogging.

Bye George, By George:   As many of you are aware, I took a brief hiatus from blogging over the last couple of weeks.due to the illness and eventual passing of my stepfather George Lechelt.  I had attempted to make it back to East Tennessee in order to say my good-byes, but sadly he passed on October 13th, the day before I arrived.  He will be missed and I plan to pay a tribute to him either here on this blog or more probably on my memoir blog Wrote By Rote.

During my stay at my mother's house I had the pleasure of sharing time with family members including my daughters and my granddaughters.   We had a good time, but there was also plenty of time for introspection and reflection on my current status of life and my future.  Many of us probably go into a similar state of mind in times of mourning.  Indeed, I've been doing much thinking and evaluating over the past year. I'm continuing to make some life changes--a good thing, eh?   If we don't change, we can get stuck in a rut and I'm trying to avoid that.

For one thing there will be no NaNo for me this year.   I've got too many other things going on and I don't need to add writing a novel to all that I currently am trying to sort out.   I wish all the best to those of you who are taking the NaNo challenge this year.

Misunderstanding Due to Misrepresentation?:   I wanted to clear up something about the direction I had indicated my blog would be taking in the future.   It became evident to me as I read some of your comments in some of the preceding posts that some of you might be turned off by the fact that I might be dipping into the realms of controversy in some of my posts.  I may have misrepresented my intent in my explanations along the way.

Rather than emphasizing the concept of stirring controversy, I probably should have been sticking more to the idea that my intent is to make readers think about certain issues, react to them, and add their opinions. Dissension is welcomed.  I'm not looking for heated exchange, but friendly debate.  As I mentioned somewhere along the way, I just want to figure certain things out and toss out ideas that are bouncing around my head to see what you think.

Don't be scared.  Don't avoid my blog because you think things might get too ugly.  I just want to have some conversations, so I hope many of you will join in.

This Ain't No Bag Of Feathers:  Sometimes I wonder if I'm trying to get too heavy in my thinking.  Maybe I'm dishing out a weighty chest of treasure when what readers really want is some light reading.  Then again some of you may think I'm laying a paper bag full of dog doo on your doorstep and setting fire to it.   If that's the case, I can understand your getting irked with my blog and avoiding the crap.  I hope that's not the case and I hope any readers who think this will honestly let me know.

I've noticed that sometimes the topics on my blogs get very few comments.  In some cases it could be because some of my blogs are read by fewer readers, like my dream blog A Faraway View.  A recent guest post by Stephen T McCarthy--a post that I thought was beautifully written--received only three comments.  I wonder if readers found the topic too difficult or perhaps--dare I say it--too controversial?  I invite you to read the post in question, Goldenshadow, and let us know your thoughts.

Whether you like Stephen T McCarthy's writing or not, there will be more coming on A Faraway View as Stephen has stepped up to offer me some more guest posts to help me in my time of sorting things out.  Read his stuff while you can since he has announced his plans to shut down his blog Ferret-Faced Fascist Friends after already shutting down his Stuffs blog several months ago.  This is the guy that started me blogging and I think he deserves more readers.

We Can Always Talk About the Weather:   My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the monster storms in the eastern United States.  Three of my daughters live right in the heart of things in New Jersey.   My daughter Ada and her daughter Lillee were evacuated by bulldozer due to flooding.  Her husband stayed in their house with his father.   All three girls are now tucked away in my middle daughter Emilee's house.  With all the power out they say they are whiling away the time eating all the food in the refrigerator.   They have a houseful of people and it probably won't be long before they finish all of the food  Hopefully, the power will be on soon and the stores will be open.

What are your Halloween plans?   Have you done a life assessment lately?   Do deep topics steer you away from blogs?   Has Frankenstorm affected you?

More Guest Post Opportunities Await

Let me also remind you that I am also accepting guest posts at my memoir blog Wrote By Rote and my dream blog A Faraway View.   If you want to try your hand at memoir writing or impart some advice regarding what you know about writing memoir, you can submit your guest post on this blog that publishes every Saturday.   On Thursdays, my dream blog is extending an invitation to anyone who has dreams to share or who would like to discuss their theories and thoughts on what dreams are and what they mean.    Please check out both of those blogs to see if you might have something you'd like to offer.  Creativity is calling you.

We are also accepting guest posts at the A to Z Blog.     Many spaces are available on that site and we have a place for you.  Your post there doesn't strictly have to be about the A to Z Challenge either.  Stephen Tremp has been presenting a fascinating series on science every other Thursday.  On Fridays Nicole Ayers offers fun and diversion to start your weekend off right.  We've had many of you offer a whole range of topics at the site--everything from A to Z and I'm not talking about the Challenge.   If you've got something you want to present to the A to Z community this is the place to do it.

My thanks to everyone who has signed up for Hijack This Blog! so far.   And also thanks to those who have signed up on the other sites or who will be soon.   I'm looking forward to the posts that are coming up.

Have you signed up for one of my guest posts yet?  If so, would you like to tell us what you'll be presenting?    If you haven't signed up for a spot, is there something that's holding you back?

One Thing Leads to Another

Donald Duck as he first appeared in The Wise L...Donald Duck as he first appeared in The Wise Little Hen (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A few days ago I was visiting a blog post by Chuck at Apocalypse Now--an innovative, wacky, and often twisted blog (Happy Birthday Chuck)--and I followed a link that he'd left in the post to an earlier post that he'd done that had a topic that intrigued me.

Anyway, I went to that earlier post and left a comment there.  Chuck seemed somewhat surprised and pleased that I had actually gone to the link, read the post, and left a comment.  In a later response Chuck said, "...thanks for going back to square one to read and leave a comment. You inspired an upcoming post by doing that."

So as I considered this, I was inspired to write a post related to this topic of comments.   As some of my regular readers may recall, I am fascinated and entertained by comments and the ensuing dialog that sometimes springs from them.  In fact, if some of you wonder why I don't visit more blog posts, it's often because I am wrapped up in ongoing conversations on my blogs or other blogs.  Don't every apologize for leaving me a long comment--I love 'em, especially when they lead to a discussion.

In any case, this concept of ongoing blog comment discussions made me think of a rather lengthy interchange prompted by my most recent post at A Faraway View--a blog that doesn't usually receive too many comments, but the ones that are left are often quite involved and interesting.

One massive exchange on this most recent post occurred amongst myself, Stephen T McCarthy, and Faraway Eyes.   I mean this exchange was epic in proportion and will probably be resulting in an additional guest post or two or more.  I had a great time exchanging thoughts with these two ever-fascinating bloggers.  Hopefully I'll have Stephen's guest post on site this Thursday.

Another blogger who invariably has been leaving comments at my dream blog is the ever contemplative Jay Paoloni, Actor.  He also has been occasionally posting on the topic of dreams, as well as other topics such as Donald Duck's disposition.   Whatever he writes about he does so with eloquence and sometimes a dash of tongue in cheek.  It's a thoughtful blog for those of you who enjoy a moment to ponder now and then.

I want to also thank all of my other regulars who comment on that site as well as those who manage to pop in every now and then.   I try to keep things interesting at A Faraway View

Thinking of guest posts, I hope that all of you will visit Wrote By Rote for the guest visit by Christine M Grote.  If you're not yet familiar with Christine, be sure to visit her extraordinary blog Christine M Grote which is filled with well told stories, reflections on life, and samples of her remarkable photography. In her guest spot she tells about her acclaimed book Dancing In Heaven.

I guess I should stop here because as soon as I think of one thing to write about another thing pops into my head.  If you let me I could be here writing all day if I knew somebody was reading it.  Instead, maybe you can check out a few of the above links, leave some comments, and start your own ongoing blog conversations.  Or maybe this post will inspire a post of your own.

Do you ever get involved in ongoing comment discussions?   Do you like it when readers leave lengthy comments?    Have you ever been surprised by a comment left on an older post that you've written?  Are you familiar with any of the above mentioned blogs and bloggers?

Just Rambling -- #atozchallenge

English: 1965 Ranbler Classic 660 station wago...Image via Wikipedia

In the mid-1960s my parents bought a Rambler station wagon.  It caught fire somewhere outside Pulaski, Virginia.

Actually there was only a tiny bit of fire inside the engine when it overheated as we climbed up the mountain after exiting off Interstate 81 because the gauge was registering a high temperature.  The car didn't really catch fire, but it makes for a good story to tell it that way.  This story is always good for some laughs at family gatherings.

This has nothing to do with my post today.  I only used this thought because I used the word "rambling" in my title and had a flash of word association.  This concept of making associations is something I'll be blogging about in the future.  How can anyone say they can't come up with something to write about?  Or is it more of a case of having so much to write about that you don't quite know where to start?

Today I'm just killing some time with this post.  In the future I'll be putting up a post about the topic of "killing time"--somehow that post keeps getting postponed.  I kind of hate it when I have to pone my posts, but these new ideas keep interrupting my schedule.  And since I have a special post scheduled for tomorrow, I thought maybe I'd just blabber today.

     And speaking of blabbering:

Follow me on Twitter logo                    Image via WikipediaI am now on Twitter!  Please follow me @ArleeBird

As the cheering subsides, I will continue.   This was destined to happen.  I began playing with Twitter this past Saturday on the A to Z Challenge Twitter account.   Then when I started getting a bit out of hand with my tweets about "Federal Duck" I knew it was time to take the conversation to my own Twitter site.

So now you can get updates on "Federal Duck" and all sorts of other inanities and nonsensical wise quacks on my own personal Twitter site--that is unless the Twitter folks decide to kick me out of the aviary for my palavering.  And from what I've seen on Twitter so far I'm probably in no danger.  After all, an Arlee Bird needs to Twitter.

Yes, this Federal Duck thing is going somewhere.  Some of you might hope it will be going far away and if so, you will be getting your wish.  Be sure to check this week's edition of A Faraway View, another blog that many of you probably don't I have.  How's that for some product placement?

Speaking of product placement, I'm not done with that topic yet.  I've still got more posts to come on that topic, marketing, advertising, and all sorts of capitalistic fun.  Consider this mention today an advertisement of things to come when I'm not getting sidetracked with other topics.

So like I was saying, this coming Wednesday on this blog--Tossing It Out--I will be putting in a few words about Twitter. It will be more than 140 words you can rest assured, but I'll try to keep it relatively short.

Here's my goal:  I want to learn about this Twitter thing.  I'll be tossing out my thoughts on it and looking for some education tossed back to me from you Twitter experts.  And I'm sure that even those of you who don't give a whit about how to twit can offer some valuable insight.

But I'm stealing my own thunder.  Come back Wednesday for that story because I hear the sound of a nearer storm approaching.  Could it be a CassaStorm?   No, that's coming later.  The roar of revelry I hear in the near future is the sound of the party tomorrow for Alex J. Cavanaugh's Catch Fire CassaFire release party.  Are you ready to feel the burn of a hot new best seller from Alex?

Join us tomorrow as the Blogoverse erupts when Alex makes his grand re-entry into the sci-fi scene.  Are you ready to party?

And do not--I repeat, do not--forget to sign up for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.  Tell your friends, enemies, family, and family who are enemies to get on board with us as we strive to achieve the amazing feat of 1000 by this Thursday March 1st.

Then we'll talk about April 1st.

Oh, and one more thing.  Be sure to stop by Yvonne's blog Welcome to My World of Poetry as she versifies the visit we had with one another.  Thank you for your sweet words, Yvonne.

Dressing Up for Halloween

Some of you, especially those of you with children, might be thinking of shopping for Halloween costumes these days.  Maybe you've already bought something.  Some will choose to be creative and make the costumes yourself or patch something together from things you have lying around the house.  Pumpkins and Halloween decorations are all over the stores.  It's kind of difficult not to notice that Halloween will soon be here.

I won't be dressing up for that festive day, but I have been dressing up--or dressing down--my blog of late.  Over the last few weeks we've looked at some of the changes and you readers have been giving me some fine feedback.   I've done some major blog cleaning, split up into multiple blogs, and you may have noticed a new header design.

I've altered the color scheme of my header and removed the reference to the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge.  After all this is where the Challenge started, but now it's got a new home.  If you haven't visited the A to Z Blog and become a follower I hope you will do so today.   News about the Challenge should start coming in soon and I don't want anyone to miss it.

Tossing It Out may have a new header with a new slogan--Juggling words and phrases--but the blog content will remain pretty much the same.   Although now if I write anything about dreams it will most likely appear on A Faraway View (my dream blog).   I will still include some memoir material on this blog, but some of that will now be diverted to the memoir blog Wrote By Rote.

Speaking of which, Susan Kane of thecontemplativecat challenged me a while back to write a blog post about adventuresome food.   I decided to delay this challenge to deliver as a Halloween post.  It's not really all that related to Halloween, but there was just something about the topic that made me think the post would be appropriate then.  I'll be posting this story coming this Friday October 28.

On Wednesday October 26,  I'll be visited with a guest post by Stephanie Campbell who hosted me earlier on her blog So You Want to Be a Writer?.  Stephanie's got a special Halloween story that features characters from her latest book Poachers.  Don't miss this fun little tale and say hello to Stephanie.

In the upcoming week I may be more lax than usual making rounds to visit your blogs since I'm here in Tennessee and may not be on the computer as much.  Next Monday, which is Halloween, I'll be back to normal--kind of.  What the heck is normal anyway?

Are you dressing up for Halloween?   What are the hot costumes this year?  Have you linked to the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge Blog yet to encourage your readers to join up?
