This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Ghosts, Witches, and Vampires ( #BOTB )

It's October!  Time for Halloween and all the scary stuff that comes with that day of the year.  Are you ready for all the ghouls and other assorted characters who will be soon be tap tap tapping at your door in search of handouts?  But before that happens, are you ready for another Battle of the Bands?

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Halloween Inspired Battle

Being as such that Halloween is such a popular time of each year--one of the biggest retail events of the year--why don't we have Halloween anthems and songs like we do at Christmas?   There are the traditional favorites like "Monster Mash" or "Thriller" but nothing that seems to equal the huge quantity of songs we get inundated with during the Christmas season.  And I can't think of any scary songs we sing as a group.  Isn't it time for some seasonal songs of Halloween?  With that in mind, I've decided to make this Battle about spooky songs that fit well into a Halloween theme.

Every year new innovations in costumes or character themes enter the marketplace.  Possibilities for dress-up run the gamut of every kind of superhero imaginable to all sorts of horror creations to career depictions like medical or law enforcement personnel.  You name it and someone probably will be dressing like it.

Then there are those perennial favorites that have been around since the earliest times of dressing up for Halloween.  In this Battle I will focus on three of the biggies in costumes:  ghosts, witches, and vampires. I offer you one song for each character and you pick your favorite song and favorite costume.  Will they be the same choices or different?  It's up to you, so just have some fun and play along.  And even if you don't like any of the songs, hopefully you'll like one at least a little bit better than the others.

         Are you ready?  Let's go!

Rebecca & the Sunnybrook Farmers   "Ghost"  (1969)

Jim Stafford   "Swamp Witch"  (1973)

Roky Erickson   "Night of the Vampire"  (1981)

Time to Vote!

You can be scared of these songs, but don't be afraid to vote!   Which scary song do you prefer?
Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

  1. Well, for me Halloween isn't a big seller of songs... I guess I'll go with the first one. Maybe short, but not so dirge-y.

    1. CW, when I was a kid I liked scary songs for Halloween, but definitely not my thing now. But I like my song picks in this Battle.

An opening vote for Rebecca & the Sunnybrook Farmers.

  2. It's the Swamp Witch for me! Fun ballad ;-)
I won an award for dressing as a Candy Kiss - lots of aluminum foil for that one ;-)

    1. Diedre, I've seen Candy Kiss costumes over the years & probably most if not all were homemade. It's a cool costume idea.

      A vote for Jim Stafford.

  4. Hey Lee,

I'm not a big Halloween fan. I was as a kid but that's only because I was more of a fan of the candy I hoped to get. :) I won't be dressing up and while we usually have fun watching creepy movies and snacking on sweets, we keep our porch light off to dissuade trick or treaters. In this round I'm going with Jim Stafford. Here's to keeping ghosts, swamp witches, and vampires away Halloween night or any night for that matter.

Oh yeah, don't worry about adding your signature link. I usually spot the hold on your comment to approve. I don't know why WP does that. Have a bandtastic day!

    1. Cathy, we're the same with Halloween. In a way I feel like a scrooge, but I get tired answering the door and candy has gotten very expensive.

      A vote for Jim Stafford.

Ghost versus Witch versus Vampire -- GREAT Battle Of The Bands concept!!

I have always loved Jim Stafford. He was so creative, talented and funny! In fact, because his personality and wit were so outstanding, his phenomenal guitar playing got overshadowed and was vastly underrated. Stafford would be on my short list of 'Most Talented' entertainers I've ever seen.

There's STILL an album by Jim that I had on LP but which has never been released on CD. If I ever saw that on a CD, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, without the slightest reservation.

To make matters even better, from everything I've ever seen and heard about Jim Stafford, apparently he's every bit as nice and personable behind the scenes as he was on stage and in front of the camera. He's one of very few celebrities that I'd love to meet someday.

Great BOTB concept, but my vote is as easy as eating bread: JIM all the way, every day, and twice on Sundays!!

  7. Hi Lee -
Normally I like Stafford, but this one is too slow and talkie for me, so I am going with Roky Erickson for this battle.

  9. I love Halloween (Hubby hates it). I have not decorated yet as, for me, it's too soon. On my way to work, I have seen one home going all out which looks pretty cool. I have to take a picture of it. My mom made all our costumes and I was a witch right out of the Grim Fairy tales. I wore a dress and I have my Bavarian sweater which was so warm and perfect. I had my long blond hair and my mom made my witches hat with a spider made from those twists..I forgot the name of them. She created my witches nose from bandaids and even put a wart on it with hair (from my mom) sticking out of it. I won best costume that year in the small town that had this kids' festivity. As an adult, I loved my viking outfit. Again my mom made my chest and shield armour from cardboard and shiny wallpaper along with arm bands. My hat, the same plus she created the Brunhilde horns. It was a fun costume.
Now, listening to them all, I am going with the 2nd song...the witch as I liked the style of it the best.

    1. Birgit, I'm mixed about Halloween, but prefer to ignore it other than buy some candy on sale afterwards. Like I do for Valentine's Day.

Homemade costumes are the best. When I got older I started compiling my own costumes and they were better than those packaged costumes the stores sold.

      A vote for Jim Stafford

  10. Great idea for a battle! I've never been one to really get into the Halloween spirit, except for when I was MUCH younger. For me, I really liked Swamp Witch the best. It was a story/ballad I could get into.

  11. Mary B, I think it's a cool Battle idea and it has a slew of possibilities. I mostly ignore Halloween these days, but once it was a really big deal for me.
