Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month. My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months. The premise is simple: Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it. Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.
Delilah
Some of you might remember that heartthrob of the sixties and seventies--the one and only Tom Jones. He had a number of hits during his time on the charts and among them was the song "Delilah". You can click on the link to hear the Jones version if you're not familiar with it or don't quite remember it or you can just head on down the page to hear the two contenders of the Battle using this song. Don't be scared. These are harder versions that what Jones sang, but they still stay pretty true to the spirit of the original version. See which version you enjoy the most...
Metal Scent "Delilah" (2007)
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band "Delilah" (1975)
Time to Vote!
Forget about throwing panties or hotel keys! Tom Jones has left the building and now these guys are holding down the stage. Which version do you prefer? Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.
Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.
Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

Very different versions. I have to give it to Metal Scent though.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I had you in mind when I chose the metal version. No surprise in your pick...

Well, you know me by niwbthst neither are appealing as I prefer the original way. Tgat being said, I vote for Alex Harvey because it's less annoying...lol
ReplyDeleteBirgit, I thought about going with the more traditional version, but I figured that would be too easy.
DeleteA vote for Alex Harvey.

If this were a contest between the videos, Alex Harvey would win, but since it between the music, I'll go with Metal Scent.I liked it better musically,.
ReplyDeleteJohn H, I agree on the video rating.

Alex Harvey is creepy. The first one gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteL.Diane, creepy? Oh, I don't know, but if that's what you think.

LEE ~
ReplyDeleteMetal Scent did nothing for me. In fact, I couldn't even get through the whole song. It just sounded like "cut & paste" stereotypical Heavy Metal. There was nothing new or different there.
THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND, on the other hand, was pretty amusing / entertaining. It seemed almost like 'Alice Cooper meets Tiny Tim', or something like that.
Easy vote for Alex Harvey & his singing clowns and court jesters.

STMcC Presents BATTLE OF THE BANDS
STMcC, I didn't think you'd like the metal band. Your description of SAHB seems on spot to me.

Oh, dear... I have to agree with STMc on the metal one... but honestly, the polka version is a bit too Benny Hill for me... I will abstain this time...
ReplyDeleteCW, I thought you were a pretty open minded music fan. Oh well, can't please everybody.

This was something else. I never liked the song much in the first place, although I did like Tom Jones. The metal version sounds like, well... a metal band playing "Delilah." The second version sounded like utter crap. I simply cannot imagine anyone actually spending a single moment practicing, rehearsing, filming, or - heck - even CONTEMPLATING playing this song that way. It has no redeeming features. I would rather spend an evening watching Bertolt Brecht's "Waiting for Godot" than listening to this song. Or perhaps receiving an ice water enema.
ReplyDeleteOh, what the heck... why am I keeping you in suspense? I am voting for the metal band.
Sixgun McItchyfinger
6-Gun, seems overly harsh to me, but I found something about both to like so that's me. I'll have a bit more to say in my results post. I think you might have taken SAHB a bit more seriously than they intended their performance to be.

Great song, I can well remember Tom Jones's version but out of the above two I choose the first one, quite different from the original but all the same good.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
Yvonne, I agree that it is at least a good song and maybe a great pop song.
DeleteSounds like you've chosen Metal Scent.

Tom Jones' Delilah is firmly entrenched in the memory banks. It was a staple at wedding receptions, back in the day. 😃 These two covers are so different! While I agree that Metal Scent was formulaic, my vote goes to them. Alex Harvey was amusing, but too campy for my taste.
ReplyDeleteDebbie D, The song was indeed popular though I'm not sure that it seems like the right thing for a wedding reception, but maybe no one was paying attention to the lyrics.

Metal Scent was not music to my ears. It's just not singing if you're shouting. Alex Harvey seemed to poke fun at a song that has just as much right to be banned as any other controversial book in the library, and somehow made it a little more tolerable. Tom Jones still reigns supreme, but Alex Harvey gets my vote ;-)
ReplyDeleteDiedre, I think SAHB was certainly approaching the song in the spirit of campy fun.

Truly hated the attitude Alex Harvey put into it.
ReplyDeleteThat would have had me pick Metal ScenT alone, but it also brought back my old favorites, Uriah Heep, and that sealed the deal.
Metal ScenT
Craig, I used to listen to Uriah Heep a lot back in the seventies. Not the first band that came to mind here, but I hear what you're saying.
