This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

The Truth Will Set You Free (#BOTB)

These days we get bombarded by so much in the name of truth that sometimes it's difficult to say what really is true.  What we often hope to be true is rarely what is true in the end...

Where'd That Come From?

This past week, just as it seemed my computer was bouncing back from its previously cantankerous behavior, my body decided to pack me a wallop.  Amid a barrage of news reporting about a Coronavirus pandemic, I was knocked out for the first three days of last week with some weird malady that had me in bed much of the time.  Now I seem to be bouncing back just in time for the March 1st edition of Battle of the Bands...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

The Truth Will Set You Free

In this Battle I'll be presenting two very different songs that have the same name and the same theme.  The first comes from Dawnelle Elizabeth, an up-and-coming young Christian singer from Southern California.  The second from a rock legend who's been making music and charting hits for many decades--Dion Dimucci, or just "Dion" as most of you probably know him.

Take a listen to each and then cast your vote for the song performance that you like best...

Dawnelle Elizabeth   "The Truth Will Set You Free"  (2014)

Dion     "The Truth Will Set You Free"  (1980)

Time to Vote!

Did one of these songs set you free more than the other?  Or did you just like one better than the other?   I hope you'll play along with us.   Which song version do you prefer?   Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

    1. Yvonne, I'm not really scared or even worried. I try to take precautions and all the recommended stuff.

      First vote goes to Dion.

  3. Glad you're bounding back.
Since I can't stand country music, the second one wins easy.

    1. Alex, I didn't think Dawnelle sounded very country, but she looked the part I guess.

      Again a vote for Dion.

  4. LEE ~

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

The whole Coronavirus bit is just the usual "scare tactic". One needs to jettison all the mainstream news (aka "fake news") sources and find alternative, trustworthy sites and researchers in order to know the truth (and Truth) that makes us free.

To be honest, I liked both of these songs, but I needed to listen to the first one a second time while avoiding watching the video because... I found that kind of disturbing. Ha!-Ha!

Dawnelle Elizabeth certainly has some... uhm... pipes.

Although both songs were good, with "Good News" (or, "Gospel") messages, I preferred the melody of the DION song, so... there ya go.

  6. Hi Lee!
For a moment there, I thought you were quoting Rod Serling in your very first (top) paragraph. So scarily true.

    Glad you’re feeling better ;-)

I’m not quite sure what truth either contender is looking for but I’d be more inclined to follow Dion’s lead for this battle ;-) A vote for Dion, please.

    1. Diedre, Rod Serling had a lot of influence over my writing style. Though I hadn't thought about that when I wrote this.

      Again it's Dion.

  8. Hi Lee -

Glad you are feeling better, as is your computer apparently.

I like the second one more than the first one here. Many reasons, but they would sound boring to you after three (or is it four five or six?) years of me saying the same kinds of things!

    1. 6-Gun, can't keep me down for long and my computer seems to be cooperating for now.

Yeah, reasons seem to replicate from Battle to Battle, but I would expect such. How much more can we say about why we like stuff?

      A vote for Dion.

  9. Lee,

I'm glad to read that you're bouncing back from whatever had you down last week. Sometimes our allergies will flare-up making us think we have something really horrible but when we make a quick recovery then we always blame it on our allergies. :)

Computers can be squirrelly, especially old ones fixing to kill over. I hope yours keeps plugging along until you're ready to switch out for a new one.

I'm watching the A to Z Challenge site to announce the sign up. Will that be sometime this week? I'll keep my eyes peeled!

My vote goes to Dion. Generally, I prefer male vocals to female. Another factor in this round that won me over is the 80s throwback sound.

Thanks for visiting earlier this morning to vote in my Mad World BoTB Showdown!

Have a good week and stay healthy, my friend!

    1. Cathy, I tend not to have allergies so I don't think that was my problem. Just some itinerant virus I guess.

The A to Z sign up should have opened on March 1st. Not sure what the delay is, but there is an awareness so I think the list will open very soon.

      A vote for Dion.

  11. Holy jugs Batman! Sorry for not being politically correct but she is Dolly Parton size...I had to look away and i am very much heterosexual. She has a nice voice but I will give it to Dion because, after a while, he repetitive refrain got under my skin. I am glad you are feeling better and have recovered from that bug you got. I just wonder what would happen if the media would talk about how many peopledie each year of the flu and/or pneumonia. I bet it would cause a huge panic. I think it's good to be careful and stop the travelling to/from China and Iran to play it safe. Quarantine is always the best but we need to remain calm and not panic and especially don't point the finger. This causes the most harm.

    1. Birgit, I didn't even notice what Dawnelle looked like--yeah, right.

Loads of people die every die from all sorts of things. The novelty of a newly discovered ailment tends to cause imaginations to run wild. Panic leads to irrational thinking.

      A vote for Dion.

  12. My vote goes for Dawnelle Elizabeth, love her spirit and energy.

I am glad that you are getting better. I live in Japan where it is has become chaos: schools are closed, attractions are closed, events are cancelled, and there is no soap or toilet paper. I have to go to work as I work as a private daycare (but we are on the edge). I haven't gotten sick yet but fear that I might catch it as I can easily catch things.

    1. ami, population is so condensed in places like Tokyo that there is a lot of reason to take precautions during a time of illness such as we have now. I don't go much of anywhere most of the time so I'm not affected much.

      A vote for Dawnelle.

  13. I'm going for Dion as smooth sound. Dawnelle's style was too much on my ears - somewhat 'Canbelto' as my late mother would say. So Dion for sure.

  14. I'm glad you're feeling better, Lee. This Coronavirus is creating quite a panic. As for your battle, it's Dawnelle Elizabeth, all the way! Loved her powerful pipes and joie de vivre. Dion was very bland, by comparison.

  17. Hey Lee, I think the virus is here to stay for a while. Or until they develop a vaccine. BTW, is this country music we are talking about here? I'm interested in knowing. I'm in the process of listing out good songs. Do recommend.

    1. VMC, I'm ready for the virus to go. I'm "sick" of all the talk about it.

I wouldn't call either of these Country music--maybe Dawnelle has a bit of a country flavor, but it's still rock and roll to me.
