This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Automobile Accidents

The films that I'll be listing in my April postings will not necessarily be films that I'd call my favorite films, but they will be favorites in the genres I'll be naming.   The A to Z genres are very specific micro genres as opposed to the broader genres like action, romance, or comedy.

Movies about automobile accidents or where auto accidents are a prominent element of the plot:

Any action film will usually include car chases where there are many vehicle crashes.   This micro genre does not include these.

Intersection (1994) --In this film starring Richard Gere and Sharon Stone, a successful architect watches his life flash before his eyes as his car careens toward an accident in an intersection on a country road.  The film has received plenty of bad reviews, but I actually liked it.  This may have had something to do with the time of my life when I saw the film and the serendipitous way I acquired it.  For some reason I found two unopened copies of the film along with some other peculiar items in a box I was unpacking at work.  The videos and other miscellaneous items had nothing to do with my business.   I guess they had been shipped to me by accident.

Amores Perros (2000) -- In this highly acclaimed Mexican film, an automobile accident intersects with the lives of an assortment of people and their stories.  It's one of those movies about how lives are intertwined even when we may not know the other people involved.

Crash (1996) -- From the same named book by the great sci-fi author J.G. Ballard, the story of this film involves people who gain sexual gratification from car crashes.  I don't know if this weird fetish is real, but the film tells the story well, the acting is excellent, and the cinematography is well done.  Definitely an adult film with fairly graphic content.   But it's a Ballard story and he's good.

About my recent presentation on blogging and the A to Z Challenge at the Children's Book Writers

On Saturday March 30th I was hosted by Nutschell The Writing Nut and Alana from Writercize at the Children's Book Writers of Los Angeles meeting.   I was very impressed by both of these young ladies.  This had to be one of the most organized well run groups I've seen.   We had 22 writers in attendance with only about 6 with blogs already.  The group seemed very interested in blogging and had tons of good questions.  We had 3 hours set aside and I didn't even make it through all of the slides on my PowerPoint presentation.   But that was okay because we got a lot of good information out there.

There was a lot of interest in the A to Z and so far there is one new blogger who started her blog the morning after my workshop and she immediately joined A to Z.  There may be more, but this is one that I discovered on the sign-up list.

If you have time I'd appreciate it if you'd stop by and follow Kid's Math Teacher (She's #1647 on the list as I write this).  Check out her post about the A to Z and perhaps tweet it out.   A comment would be great too.   I think she's going to be an excellent blogger.  She's starting out the right way and has followed the instructions I offered at the workshop in starting her blog.  She deserves our support.

If there are any others reading this who were there at the workshop, please let us know in the comment section.  Keep your eyes out for a report from Nutschell at The Writing Nut.

Can you think of any films that feature an automobile accident?   Have you seen any of the films I've mentioned?    Have you read any of J.G. Ballard's work?

  1. I found it interesting that you mentioned 'Crash' of 1996, but the one that I like is 'Crash' 2004, also involving but not entirely based on an automobile accident. :)

    Cheers!

  2. Although it's not really an automobile accident, I love the 'Speed' films! I always worry about something like that ever happening to me while driving and whether I'd know what to do..

Happy Birthday Arlee! Thank you for coming up with this great idea that brings so many bloggers together :)

  9. It's an interesting idea for a subgenre. The only other car crash films I can think of Fight Club and Changing Lanes, but I suppose films with car chases are probably full of them.

  16. Crash (1996) had me think of the other Crash (2004) that won the Oscar. This is a good start, made me think about movies and car crashes. Yet the car crash fetish thing might be real because there are so many sexual fetishes out there.

  17. I've not seen any of those films but The Italian Job has my favourite crash scenes. I love the mini car chase and as for the ending! Now that's what you call a cliff hanger!!

  68. Hi Arlee,

Thanks for creating the A to Z blogging challenge. The contagion finally spread to my wee neck of the woods in Texas, and I've taken the plunge!

As for movies featuring auto accidents, 3 popped into my head:

    The Great Gatsby
Frida (Well, it was a tram accident)
and... Oh, what's the name of the other... It's that Jackson Pollack bio-pick. Can't think of the name of it!

I'm not sure if the Pollock pic really featured the crash, but since I knew he Pollock in one, I got nervous every time Ed Harris took a car ride in that film. Ha!

The first car crash movie scene that popped in my head was the scene in Meet Joe Black where Brad Pitt's character gets smashed by a car while trying to cross the street. Ugh. 107. Oh, I don't remember the title, but back in the 80s, there was a TV movie about a huge freeway pile-up. Many of the characters were introduced, with all their life's struggles--and then the crash.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I haven't seen any of these, and the only one that comes to mind is a movie whose name I can't process. It starred Sandra Bullock and started with "P" and my mind stops there. Her days were all messed up. She was living them in the wrong order. Her husband was dead. Then he was alive. Then he wasn't. It all culminated in this car crash that she was trying to put together with the jumbled days. It was an interesting concept. Maybe it was called Perception. That would make sense...

Anyway, like your theme. Very clever.

  109. I go to the movies with my hubby. If guns, aliens, or weird stuff isn't involved, we don't see the movie! :-)

I'll be ready when you get to the gun-toting alien from an alternate universe genre.

  110. Hello from A to Z! Off the top of my head, I recall that I Know What You Did Last Summer was based on a car crash. The movie didn't follow the book though, but car accidents were in both of them, as that was a major turning point in the story.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I read the book in college, and we watched the film afterward. Wasn't particularly a fan of either.

  112. Hi Arlee, I can't say this is a good start. So sad to note that you started with sad Note/incident. I read the other page that’s really wonderful.
Anyways expecting more informative and educative posts from you.
Since I am not a movie addict, i have no such experience to post.

  113. I did see "Intersection", and I saw the newer movie of "Crash". I, too, am a movie buff and am trying to work my way through AFI's 100 Best Love Stories.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I remember really unliking Crash. It's generally acknowledged these days that it should not have received the Oscar it won.

The only car crash event that I really liked in a movie was one where the movie was ended by an abrupt car crash. It was so totally unexpected, but it was based on a real person, and that's how it happened. I didn't know that till I looked it up after, though. I can't remember the name of the movie :/

    ReplyDelete
  115. I love movies, so with you and Alex blogging about them, I'm sure to learn a lot of things I didn't know.

  119. Micro-niche movie posts? I love it! What a cool idea.

Also, how beautiful is it that you inspired a blogger to start, and immediately join A-Z.

I'm very new to it myself, but I'm excited and appreciative of all involved.

    P.S.
I also agree with Meera, the 2004 Crash is quite good also.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'm not familiar with those movies but I love that you added a nice mention for Kid's Math Teacher. I'm going there next.

  121. I've heard of two of these movies, but I haven't seen any of them.

I'm looking forward to your theme this year. I love posts about movies!

  122. I've seen Amores Perros. I have not seen the other two films, but I have seen Crash from 2004. What about Changing Lanes? Interesting topic, Lee!

  125. Thanks for this ongoing stream of comments and the additional movie recommendations.

Andrew-- The Crash to which you were referring is the 2004 movie which as I recall I liked, but don't know that it was Oscar-worthy. The Crash that I'm speaking of is actually a much more bizarre fetish film. I also liked the original book version by J.G. Ballard which appeared around 1970 or so.

Thank you all for your comments!

  126. Having been in a car accident myself (run over and pinned underneath), that's not exactly the type of movie I'd be raring to see. One car accident movie I remember seeing before my accident is Chances Are, about a man who's hit by a car and killed, then reincarnated. He eventually begins romancing his widow and goes through the awkwardness of his daughter trying to romance him.

  127. I'm lousy at movies. I so admire people like you and Alex C. who remember and can keep it all straight.

Did you know you're on tons of "A" lists today?! It's my first year and having so much fun. Thanks Arlee!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Lee-

I tend to forget movies as the credits start to roll.

I remember liking "Intersection," (and not just because of a sophomoric crush on Sharon Stone) and not thinking "Crash" lived up to the hype.

    I like this concept.

  129. It's always great to have a theme that gets everyone racking their brains to think of what movies they know that fit that theme! Love your list. And thanks for this magnificent bloghop.

  130. Any of the Fast and Furious movies Arlee. I hope that Crash movie isn't real.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hmm... trying to remember the name of the movie. I think it is "Splinter", but I could be wrong.
    Happy April 1st!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Cannot say I've watched any of said movies, though I've seen a lot of car crashes in different movies--Fast and Furious, and the recent Die Hard, come to mind.

I understand you're the founder of the A to Z Challenge. This is my first year; I am looking forward to it, so thank you for establishing a fun kick in the A...to Z to rev up our blogging motors!

    Take care,

  133. How about Signs? The wife is hit by a car and before she dies she tells Mel Gibson's character how to fight off the aliens that won't arrive for another six months. Great movie.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Seen Crash - an icky fetish if real - but not the first two. I can see that you are going to be upping my movie watching with the challenge this year with those tempting snippets.

Thank you for founding this challenge, I enjoyed it last year, which was my first one, and am sure I will be again this year.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Wow. I've never seen any of these. Thanks! New movies (new to me at least) to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  136. That really is a micro genre! Maybe you can supplement it with great movies featuring motor mechanics or doctors?

Can't wait to see what else you've got lined up for April.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Haven't seen any of your picks, I'm more of a classic movie buff and lover of period pieces.
I really stopped by to say thanks a billion for creating the A-Z Challenge. I signed up late last year, early this year, but I still didn't write much in advance.
Life is an adventure and you're terrific.

  141. I haven't seen any of the films that you've mentioned but two movies involving car accidents come to mind: CRASH - the 2004 Oscar winning film where the lives of strangers cross each other. There is a car accident in the movie involving Thandie Newton and Matt Dillon. Also, the movie CHANGING LANES with Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson is about a car accident that causes the two main characters to try to ruin each other's lives. I don't think I'm familiar with any of Ballard's work.

Thanks for starting the A to Z Challenge years back, Arlee!!!

  143. Seriously Arlee, how do you keep up with all the comments?!?! I've not seen any of the movies you mention but I do recall one about a crash that I thought I toss out there: 11:14. It's about a crash and lives all intersecting around it.

  144. I haven't seen any of the films but wanted to pop over and say a HUGE thank you for organizing the A-Z. ReplyDelete
  146. First off, thanks for the A to Z, Lee. What an amazing accomplishment!

Second, I kind of liked Intersection, too. It's not in my top ten, but it was certainly compelling to watch. And I'm intrigued by Crash. I feel a visit to Netflix coming on.

  147. I can add one -- the last scene from "Downton Abbey," not well done, the very last shot could have been deleted. Not the car crash but. . . .

    ReplyDelete
  148. Hey Lee,

It was no accident I came and visited your site. No kind sir, it was not.

As you may well know, even though I would rather go to a Justin Bieber concert that participate in the A to Z, I have promoted your blog, the A to Z Challenge, via my site. I believe it sent folks your way and they joined. So, despite my tongue-in-cheek alternatives, it's all positive stuff.

I can tell you about a real life accident. Very ironic. My car got wiped out by an ambulance. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

All the best to you, Lee and to all those participating.

    Your friend,

    Gary

    ReplyDelete
  157. Hmmm... I can't think of any that aren't full out action. I've seen Crashed, but I think it was a newer version, and Intersection.

I'm a newbie to this blogging event like many others, my thanks as well! :)

    ReplyDelete
  158. This is my first year doing the challenge. I found it through Alex's blog, which I found through the Insecure Writer's Support Group, which I found through another blog with which I had shared participation in a totally unrelated blog hop.

Good to hear you had a great session with the CBWLA.

I counted 1947 people on the sign-up list for this year's A to Z, and figured out I would have to visit 75 blogs a day to get through all of them once. Well, that's probably not going to happen ... but I'll visit/comment/follow as many as I can. Have a great month!

    ReplyDelete
  159. What a fun idea to divide movies into really small subsets of genres. I haven't seen any of these (although I did see the other Crash), so I'll most likely be giving my Netflix account a workout. Thanks for coming up with the idea of this crazy blog challenge!

  163. How crazy is Crash? - it's like a road wreck; you don't want to look but nor do you want look away. Great job in starting the challenge; it's really gone big this year.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I wish I'd read Ballard before seeing the film, as I didn't enjoy the movie too much, but it might have been because I wasn't so familiar with the characters...

As for a movie with an accident... I saw 'Crash' but it was a later version, it was good from what I remember.

    Happy Birthday!

  172. The first movies I could think of that have wicked awesome automobile accidents are the Bourne series films. Holy cow, can I say crazy-town? Oh, I just did.

Arlee, thanks for the inspiring challenge. I look forward to the journey. :)

    ReplyDelete
  173. I haven't seen any of those, actually. But as far as Crash, I am fairly certain that's a real sexual fetish after seeing a TLC program on people's weird fetishes. There is some sort of weird gratification for anything you can imagine! And things you can't imagine, too :)

    ReplyDelete
  174. I've never heard of any of these movies, but will add one of them to my list of things to watch.
