This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Youth of Old Age ( #AtoZChallenge )

You've undoubtedly heard the expression about someone going through their second childhood.  Well if a second childhood would be as good as my first one then I say bring it on!

#AtoZChallenge 2020 Blogging from A to Z Challenge letter Y

Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age. - Victor Hugo

Youth of Old Age

When I was in my teens and twenties, ages beyond thirty seemed kind of old to me and the age where I am now seemed downright ancient.  Yet, now, nearing seventy, I don't really feel much older than the twenty-something guy I once was. Apparently I look older than I think I do, but I've been looking at this mortal frame on a daily basis for seven decades and the daily changes have been imperceptible to me.

If fifty is "the youth of old age" then where am I now?  The middle age of old age?  Or perhaps if I live beyond 100 years then I might still be in my youth of old age.  My mind resists as my body often reminds me that I'm not a kid anymore.  Physically I seem to have all sorts of limitations, but mentally I might be any age I want to think I am.

Age is not only relative, but it is also in the eyes of the beholder.  I hear voices inside my head telling me that I'm still young and have many years left while from without I get the implications that I am a senior citizen--not like a senior in high school, but an old codger, an outdated relic of the past.  I don't feel old, but there are indications all about me that I am old.

Well, dag-nab it, I ain't settlin' to be old any time soon unless it works to my advantage and in that case, okay, I'm old, now give me my damn senior citizen discount!

What age would you consider to be old?   As you get older do you tend to leave certain dreams behind you?   Do you think you "act your age"?

Predict Your Future Now & Rockin' Chair Results

Predict

Okay, I said it so I'm standing by it even if I have to sit in my rocking chair to make it there.  Like I've said before, I'm going to live to 156 years old.   I know it sounds silly now, but if I make it then I guess I'll have the last laugh.  If I don't, well, I guess I can say I've made an effort.  Maybe not such a good effort, but I kept my positive mindset on the future.

Considering it's already the end of February I'd say that future is coming on pretty fast.   Next thing you know it will be April and if you know about me then you know what April means.  I won't even mention it here cause I probably say it enough as it is.  I'll just ask you:  Are you ready for April?   And if you really don't know what I'm talking about then you can peruse my sidebar a bit and I'm sure you'll figure it all out somewhere along the way.

And since I've directed your attention to my sidebar, if you are not a "Bird Watcher" yet, please click on the "Join This Site" button and become a member.  I'm trying to reach 2000 members before Alex J Cavanaugh does and I'm sure I can easily get there first.  After all he needs something like 13 more as of this writing and he's going to have a hard time getting to 2000 before me.  Even if he is offering cool prizes and stuff in his Epic Giveaway.  I ain't giving away anything and I only need to get 2 or 3 more followers to make it to 2000 if my addition serves me right.  Well maybe it's a few more than 2 or 3, but no big deal.  Don't follow Alex to get a chance on winning really neat prizes, but follow me instead.  Or you can follow both of us I guess.   But me first.  And, Alex, I deserve 10 points for saying this.  Right?  And I don't know if this mention is creative or not, but you can decide that.

By the way, since I'm talking about numbers (seems like I talk about numbers a lot), how old do you predict you'll live to be?

Battle of the Bands Results:
Rockin' Chair

My Battle of the Bands post of last Saturday featured the song "Rockin" Chair" dedicated to all the old coots that didn't appreciate my 80's music showdown at the beginning of the month.   This latest contest received more approval than the previous one.   And it was a close one!

Hoagy Carmichael's version received 7 votes including my own.  It was very close for me and I did like Eric Clapton's version quite a bit.  However, that jazz violin solo in Hoagie's version cinched it for me.  I love that era of music from the 20's and 30's.

Eric Clapton edged out a win with 8 votes.

Next Battle of the Bands will be another special Saturday edition on March 1st.  Be there or be square.

Do you enjoy the Battle of the Bands posts?   Is there any particular music era that you would prefer to see matched?   Do you like "older music"?

About the Old Man Thing (Hint, hint, hint!)

A Subconscious Past Study
A Subconscious Past Study (Photo credit: ssoosay)

Do you believe that our subconscious mind rules most of what we say and do?   We think we're doing one thing because we have to do it or want to do it and all the while we're practically operating on auto-pilot.  From earliest childhood we are not in control.  It's our subconscious that drives us, tricks us into thinking we know exactly what we're doing when we actually don't know.

That's my theory for today and I'm not going to try to prove it one way or another.  Besides, my subconscious mind is probably guiding my fingers as I type this.

Whatever the case may be, that's where I'll credit the inspiration for my Monday post The Crappy Old Guy Waiter Restaurant.   I wasn't really posting the story so much for the story as I was presenting the piece as a prelude to an upcoming event.

But before I get to that event let me clarify my reference to the Original Pantry Cafe in downtown Los Angeles.  It's true that the restaurant is one of the oldest in L.A. and they have some older waiters who have been there a long time.  However the fact is that this is one of my favorite eateries in L.A.  This is a place where I try to take out of town guests who visit me.  The place has got a lot of character.  Once you step inside you feel like you've been transported back to the 1920's.  It's very cool  And the food is downright good.  Hearty portions of some of the best home-style American cooking you'll find anywhere.  The old guy waiters are real pros who have provided quality service every time I've been in the place.  If I were closer to the Pantry Cafe I'd eat there far more often than I do.  If you visit L.A. and are near the Staples Center, make a point to go eat there.  It's an original L.A. experience.

That's my unsolicited endorsement.   No one paid me to say this and no old guy waiters threatened me with harm if I didn't say it.

Enough of my gushing--I need to get back to the topic.  Subconscious mind actually rules us.  That's why I wrote the kind of true and kind of made up post of Monday.  Yeah, I think about getting older now and then and sometimes I think I'm succumbing to the throes of old age.   Or maybe I should say settling into elderliness.

Honestly I'm not ready to be reduced to just a piece of neglected furniture sittin' around the old homestead.   I'm as young as I feel and that's youthful and vital.  That's what I really feel.  Except when I'm feeling old.   Pass me the bottle and let me wallow in my crankiness if I need to, but I'm not ready to leave this old world yet.

Oh, and why today's post and Monday's post?   They're hinting at the next Battle of the Bands which comes tomorrow February 15, the day after that dumb love day that some people are so fond of celebrating.  Besides the Battle of the Bands the other good thing that starts on the 15th is that the leftover Valentine's  candy goes on sale.  I'm not falling for that full price ripoff, I'm getting all mine on sale.

Can you guess my song choice for Battle of the Bands?     Do you think the subconscious mind is really in charge of us?     Will you be stocking up on the on-sale Valentine's candy?

Saturday February 15th!
