This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Just Thinking As We Approach Year's End (déjà vu)

This is a re-post from my currently inactive memoir blog Wrote By Rote.  This post first appeared on December 31, 2011.

Winds of Change Without Awareness--A New Year's Eve Once Upon a Time

                                                             Image via Wikipedia

I try to remember but I can't. It's the exact year that I don't remember, or most of the details of that evening. I do know it was New Year's Eve.

I was married to my second wife, Susan, at the time. We were in Tennessee at my parents' house. This is where we typically spent New Year's Eve. It was the more happening place between going to Richmond, Virginia, where her parents lived, and being with my family, who were the more fun party people.

My father was still alive at the time, our kids were still babies, and my wife and I were still in our thirties. The house was aglow with lights and music and chatter and laughter as the festivities pressed on toward the turning over of one year to the next. Everyone was having a grand time.

At one point Susan and I decided to go out into the dark quiet of the night to take a break from the activity in the house. It was unseasonably warm that end of December night. Strangely and unseasonably warm--more like a summer night, but with the crisp dryness of autumn.

In silence, we strolled into the expansive back yard to a point that was about fifty yards from the house and sat down side by side in the desiccated winter grass. Wordless, we smoked a joint under a cloudless starry sky and basked in the comforting balminess of the evening breeze. Gazing upon the big house with lights in every window silhouetted against the black night sky, I slipped into a meditation.

Here from where we sat in the back yard, the lights, the house, the people seemed so far away, and it was only Susan and I with our life together beautiful and filled with so much promise. A feeling of serenity and security enveloped me as I clutched Susan's hand. I felt that now was forever and this moment would have no end.

Then a whoosh of warm wind swept over us and I felt exhilarated. With a deep breath I leaned forward to breathe in the moment. It was only Susan and I. Our world was perfect. A mental image of a distant future filled my mind--a place peaceful and beautiful where my wife and I would grow older together and watch our grandchildren grow and we would fade into the twilight years happy with the satisfaction of dreams fulfilled.

That was then, one moment on a New Year's Eve many years ago. Not too many years after that night it ended. Things changed and became different. I'm not even sure what happened or why it happened, but only that it did happen. Susan left and what we had was over. Any dreams she had once had about us were simply shrugged off as she moved on, leaving me to shoulder the burdens of memory and the confusion of questioning why things had come to the point they had reached.

It was one New Year's Eve when things were weirdly warm and sublimely wonderful. It was only an illusion--my personal illusion I guess. The winds bring change that we don't even realize, things we don't understand even after they've blown past us. Life sweeps us forward to where the next adventure awaits. There is time for memories, but no real time for memories. The memories are only illusion.

A new year is a new year and an old year is an old year and all of the years just blend together. Our minds capture certain memories isolated without reference other than the years that came before and the years that followed, whichever those years might have been. And even then we sometimes don't know which years or why.

Capture this moment in time. Savor it and breathe it in deeply. This is the last time you will ever be here.

Have you ever been swept by a magical wind?   When your expectations aren't fulfilled do you accept your circumstances with a shrug or clenched fists?   How much has your life changed in the past seven years?

Holding Back the Years (BOTB)

When time seems to pass slowly, later we often wonder how quick it was after that time has passed.  No matter how hard we might try, we cannot cling to the moments other than in memory, which often is unreliable.  Did things really happen the way we remember?  If indeed we remember at all...

You Can't Stop Time

In some ways, looking back on it all, this year seems to have been an accumulation of many years.  The illusion of the expanse of time is a deception in so many ways.  When I look back at the plans I had I can only shake my head in a certain dismay for those things that didn't happen as I had hoped they would.  And yet the miles and the minutes and hours and days came and passed, slipping elusively from my grasp.

Traveling will do that for me.  Though it may seem like I was just sitting the daylong watching the miles pass by from behind the wheel or dozing in the passenger seat while my wife drove, in reality there were the myriad of sights, mini-dramas in passing cars, music on the car stereo, or often the news.

There was plenty of news in this past year.  Big changes in the world as well as within many of us.  Friendships were broken; perceptions were altered.  Like having watched an often baffling magic show, I ponder how did this all happen the way it did.

Now I stand on a precipice of more change.  New dreams.  Unsure hopes.  Waiting and wishing that time could stand still for a year, a week, or even a day.  I can wait and wish as much as I like, but I cannot hold back time from its frantic procession toward tomorrow.

Holding Back the Years

This iconic song from 1985 is probably familiar to most of you.   It's become a classic of 80's rock/pop music after reaching hit status for the band Simply Red.  This is a great song in my opinion--and I'm not alone in that reckoning--and it might even be a favorite of some of you reading this.  Below for the purpose of jarring memories for those who might not have heard it in a while or for those of you who might have never heard the song, here is the most known version of the song as performed by Mick Hucknall and Simply Red.

DON'T VOTE ON THIS VERSION--FOR REFERENCE ONLY!!!

Here are your considerations for voting

Frantic Elevators "Holding Back the Years"  (1982)

Before Mick Hucknall became Simpy Red's front man, he was the force behind the punk rock band Frantic Elevators.  "Holding Back the Years" was the last of four singles released by the band.  Hucknall initially began writing this song when he was 17 years old in response to a somewhat tumultuous and painful childhood.  Not exactly punk rock, but still that spare instrumental style can be heard in a mournful almost jazzy setting.

Gretchen Parlato "Holding Back the Years"  (2011)

Singer/songwriter Gretchen Parlato descends from a family with a strong musical heritage.  Her grandfather and father alike played with some music legends of their times and Gretchen has continued to carry the torch as she wins awards and sings with today's jazz giants.  Here is her mellow take on the now classic "Holding Back the Years".

Winner Announced on Monday January 9th

I'm going to give you plenty of time to vote on this one since the current contest falls on a Sunday during holiday season.   I'll be offering my thoughts on the sexism charges regarding Donald Trump coming this Friday January 6th as I attempt to continue on with my (unpopular with some) President Trump Acclimation Series.  I've been postponing my posts on this series due to the holidays and having company, but now I have no excuses.  Hopefully, I won't come up with anymore excuses either unless it's something really really good.

Did you meet all of your goals for this past year?   What had you hoped to accomplish that you still did not?    What are your goals in the upcoming year?

What's New? (#BOTB) --Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

There's something sad about New Years Day--or maybe melancholy is the better word. That's how I see it at least. It's another year of life gone by with a new one looming ahead. When I was much younger that old year seemed like a lifetime, but now I have a lifetime of many years that now seemed to have passed much too swiftly.

Those many many years ago I saw the future as an unfathomable distance in time. Now the future is an unknowable destiny that could be reached tomorrow or in still many more years. I'd like to think the latter is the case. Ten, twenty, eighty more years--I'll take what I get and only hope that I have used them wisely.

And so at hand we have yet another year ahead of us.  It's a new year now, but it's getting older with each moment that passes.   So what about you this year?   What's new?

Battle of the Bands

Another year has come to an end which brings us to the start of another month which means it's time for another Battle of the Bands, the blogging event first introduced by our friends at Far Away Series and  StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens twice each month on the 1st and 15th.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Here's the song for this round:

"What's New?"

Originally composed and recorded in 1938 as an instrumental called "I'm Free" for Bob Crosby's Orchestra (click the link if you're curious to hear this version), the song title was changed to "What's New" when the lyrics were added the following year.  The song has since been recorded by many.  My Battle pits an early version with a female vocalist against a later version also featuring a female vocalist.  It's a bit of old and new with the song "What's New?"

Artie Shaw with Helen Forrest  "What's New?" (1939)

Here's one of the early renditions of the song with a female vocalist.  It's upbeat, but still to me there's a sadness to this.  For one thing the melody has a bit of a sad sound and the lyrics are a bit poignant.  Then again it just might be that the song is an old one--can you believe over 75 years?  It's many yesterdays ago.  Still it's nice to hear again.

Linda Ronstadt "What's New"  (1983)

Some 44 years after the previous recording came Linda Ronstadt with her genre changing album backed by Nelson Riddle's orchestra.  I think she was at the top of her game with this exquisite release.  She puts a classic touch on some of the classics of pop music.  After this came out I purchased a copy on cassette.  Ronstadt's album was a regular in my listening rotation back in the mid-80's.   Now enjoy and compare to the first version.

Time to Vote!

This is nothing new to most of you, but if you're visiting a Battle of the Band post for the first time then let me briefly explain.  Please give each song version a fair listen to decide which version you prefer over the other.   If you don't like either then at least tell us which recording was least innocuous to you.  This comes down to your preference and it's as easy as that.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours

Results on Friday January 8th

It's vacation time right now, but I should have a week to catch up and get back to a norm of sorts.  Since I'm traveling right now I might be a bit slow getting to your posts so bear with me.  I've got lots planned for January including another blockbuster combo post for the next Battle of the Bands on the 15th.   At that time not only will I be participating in the Backstage Blogathon, but I'll be presenting a song that corresponds to my movie pick.   Click the link if you want more info about the Backstage Blogathon.
