This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Unlimited Mileage ( #AtoZChallenge )

Unlimited mileage is something I always look for if I rent a car because I like to be able to drive a lot. Rarely do I rent a car, but I prefer to drive my own so I can drive the heck out of it...

     Unlimited Mileage

Unless I'm flying somewhere I rarely rent a vehicle and if I do rent then I don't want to be worrying about how many miles I put on that vehicle.  Of course, "unlimited mileage" really does have it's limits--usually time.  Only so far one can drive in an allotted amount of time.

When I was touring with a show back in the eighties I always traded in my vans before they reached 200,000 miles.  Since we averaged about 50,000 miles a year I wanted to be sure that I had a vehicle that was at optimal performance.  At the end of every three years or so I'd trade my van for a brand new one.  The company was paying all of my vehicle expenses as well as the vehicles themselves so it all worked to my favor.   Also the minimal repairs were good for the company expense as well.

Unlimited mileage sounds nice, but it is also a bit of a misnomer.  Not only are we restricted by time, but also by wear and tear.  We often hear folks saying they wish they had their younger bodies.  It would be great I agree.  To have a body with "unlimited mileage"--to stay young, healthy, and unstoppable is a fantasy that I think most of us share.  Too bad it's not that way.

Not in this world at least.  We can all expect that similar outcome, death, which will come in a variety of ways for the lot of us.  There's an end of the road in this life.  After that I'll be looking for unlimited mileage in my next journey.  I'm looking forward to that.

How many miles do you typically put on your vehicle on a yearly basis?   What is the most miles you've ever put on a vehicle before getting a new one?   Would you like to live forever?

Qualitative Life ( #AtoZChallenge )

Quality is an important component in determining worth.   If it's not good then why would I want to accept it?   That's how I would measure life:  Do my days have quality?

  Qualitative Life

Quantity of life sounds pretty good to me--I want to live a long time if God is willing.  But quality outshines quantity for me.  Would I rather have 20 years of struggling to get by and dealing with health issues where living was mostly a chore or would I prefer five years of the best life imaginable?   I think I would opt for the latter, but even better would be the former quantity with an abundance of good times and continual new discoveries.

Life to me is worth living as long as I can enjoy it.   The will to live is a strong one for just about anyone.  Living however entails so much more than just breathing and the processes of other bodily functions.  Pain or discomfort is not fun--not for the average person at least.  If l can't enjoy or reasonably appreciate my life then what value does my life have.

The will to live is powerful though.  A spark of hope resides in the infirm or unhealthy.  Maybe a cure will be found.  Maybe science will find a way to restore our diminished state to something more like how it was in a healthier youth.  When sick we want to get better.  Very few of us relish suffering.  We want life, but we want a good life.

So that's what I'm shooting for--a good productive life.  I want to travel, spend time with those I love, and do things that I enjoy doing.  Quality for sure and quantity if that is what has been determined for me.

I look forward to the good life that is yet to come.  I hope there is much of that life waiting ahead for me.

How long would you like to live?    Do you think of your life as a happy one?    What would you most like to have in order to improve the quality of your life?

Look at Tomorrow ( #AtoZChallenge )

Looking at yesterday I'm thankful for places I've been and people I have known, but as I look at today I feel a bit stalled though still having hope as I look at tomorrow...

     Look At Tomorrow

Life could always be worse and fortunately for me I don't think it ever has been for me.  After all I'm still here so I guess that counts for something.  Writing a memoir is something I work on continually whether it be actually writing or just thinking about my life.  That life has been a good one as far as I'm concerned.

Still I'm not going to be content to just relax from now on while resting on my laurels.  Life is nowhere near the end for me as far as I'm concerned.  My days on this Earth could end anytime, but this has always been the case.  No point on dwelling on an end of things as I know them.  Life goes on for me for many more years I hope.

Looking at tomorrow I see dreams fulfilled and new adventures discovered.  I might be slowed down as years pass, but that slowing down allows me to savor the journey if I wish.  There are still new places to visit and people to meet.  There are music, books, and art yet for me to discover.  Grandchildren to watch grow and my own children to see flourish in their own lives.

Life is worth living so I want to take advantage of as much as I can.   In some hopefully distant tomorrow I'll have plenty of time to be dead.  For now though, I'm continuing to look toward tomorrow and smile at the riches it sends my way...

Are you generally optimistic about the future?   Is your life better now than it was when you were a younger adult?    What big things do you still want to accomplish in your life?

Living Life ( #AtoZChallenge )

Life is the most important gift we will ever receive.  It's one of those gifts that keeps on giving if we are willing to accept it and if we aren't willing then the gift of life keeps on giving anyway.  Appreciate the gift by living life...

#AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary blogging from A to Z challenge letter

My April posts are looking at my life not only as it was, but as it is and where it might go in the future.   I like my life most of the time and even when I'm not liking it so much, I tend to not hang on to the bad things as much as look forward to the next good things and, more importantly, appreciate the good things that are right in front of me.

There have been a few dark times in my life when I thought it might be nice to cash in my chips and drop out of the game.  Those times never lasted long thankfully.  They were passing phases of dealing with loss or disappointments.  Then I'd see the sun shining, hear the birds singing, and sense the good all around me.  It's always best when the good expunges the evil.

No point in letting other people, bad circumstances, or anything else drag me down.  I've got a lot to live for in respect to my dreams and experiences yet to be had.  And of course there are my grandchildren.  I want to live life because there is so much still to live for...

Four of my NJ grandchildren after Marley (in sunglasses) performed at a concert.

To repeat the mantra of our late A to Z Blog Team leader Tina Downey, "Life is good!"   I tell myself that often.  I must be convincing because I believe it: Life is good and living life the best we can is a good thing to do.

I plan to be living life for the rest of my life which I hope is a long time to come.

          2051 here I come!

Have you ever considered just giving up in life?   Do you think the value of life is lessened when the quality goes down?    What keeps you focused on goals ahead of you (even if you don't know exactly what those goals are yet)?

Zero Hour (#atozchallenge)

Perspective determines everything.  Sometimes we see a glass half full or we might see it half empty.  The outcomes we hope to see usually depend on whose side we are on or whether something will be of benefit to us.

Zero Hour

The irony of zero hour being the final post in my It's About Time series is that this is a term that is often used to denote a beginning.  On the other hand we might think of zero hour being the end of a count down.  However that too signifies a beginning.  With the end of the 2017 A to Z Challenge we come to the beginning of the month of May.

With May we start seeing other beginnings as the spring season hits us almost at times with a wallop of a suggestion of summer.  From what I've seen from weather reports, summer is here and ready to start its work.   Some of us might be in the final countdown toward graduations or working time before vacation time comes.

In a way zero hour is more like a pivot point rather than a beginning or an end.  The metaphorical "circle of life" is more like a big hoop rolling down a hill.  Beginnings and ends continuously happening with fast middles whirling past us ever more difficult to keep pace with.

Zero hour doesn't mean much in the bigger scheme of life as it is that repetitious part of the cycle that keeps turning up and then turns back around.  Each morning is the start of a new day and as long as the mornings keep coming then we're good in that respect.

This post you are reading marks the end of this current A to Z series. Another new post will arrive on the day after this one has had its few hours at the top of the blog page queue.  Essentially all will be back to some semblance of normal for a while.

Be sure to be here on Monday May 1st for my next Battle of the Bands post which will be a song in honor of those who completed the 2017 A to Z Challenge--a song of relief in a sense.  In that same post I'll be incorporating my contribution to the Insecure Writer's Support Group where I'll be discussing strange research.  Also I'll be showing off my A to Z Survivor badge along with my reminder about the upcoming May 8th A to Z Reflections post.

This next post will be a busy one so please don't miss it!

In your thinking, is "zero hour" a beginning or an end?   Do you prefer the beginnings or the ends?   Do you think I should go back to one post a week or would you prefer to see more?

Why I Am the Funniest Guy in the Whole World

"Humor is something that thrives between man's aspirations and his limitations. There is more logic in humor than in anything else. Because, you see, humor is truth." - Victor Borge

I'm convinced that I am the funniest guy in the whole world.  Why?  I'm the funniest guy because I'm the smartest guy in the world.  Not to say I'm more intelligent than some physicists, doctors, brilliant scholars, or any learned erudite individuals such as that.   There are many vocational abilities like auto mechanics, computer technology, or plumbing that I don't know much of anything about.  However, I could learn anything I wanted to learn if I so desired because I am so brilliant.

My absolute brilliance is what makes me so funny.  You might as well accept that I'm smarter than you are.  Smarter than anyone anywhere is.

Take for example some bearded pseudo-intellectual who looks like he could be a college professor or some bogus intelligentsia phony like that.  Sure, he might write or talk a good game that might cause some folks to believe he's brilliant because he thinks he's brilliant.   Forget it.  Not as smart as I am and nowhere near being as funny even when he tries.

Or what about that new age globalist thinking so and so who thinks science has all the answers and she has attained some kind of moral superiority to others she sees as lesser to her though she might try to portray herself as equal to all.  Some might ooh and aah over her smooth written words, but any really smart person is not really fooled by that nonsense.  I mean, it's all okay--nice and all, but kind of a bore.

There are smart and funny people in the world, but really no one smarter and funnier than I am.  I don't have to do anything to prove it.  Facts are facts. Alternate facts are even facts albeit they are alternate.  Some who read this might be annoyed by what I'm saying here, but if you're annoyed it might be because you don't get it.  Or maybe you're taking it all too seriously.  Lighten up--I'm hilarious and you know it.  Even if you don't immediately recognize it.

The best humor is not often immediately understood because it requires deep long thought.  Or maybe not long and deep, but perceptive consideration.  Perceptivity is not something that comes natural to everyone.  Not if literal thinking about everything you hear gets in the way.  We can see this in a good many journalists on an everyday basis if you watch television mainstream news.  They are funny without thinking or realizing they're funny and they don't fully comprehend a lot of stuff they absorb because of overly literal thinking.  On the other hand, I get it because I am brilliantly perceptive.

Anyone who doesn't realize that I'm amazingly funny is reading me the wrong way.  Or more likely they're not reading at all, but merely skimming through.  If you're skimming through this piece for example, you're liking missing the xjafadisg that I'm talking about here.  If you are reading with even casual care, that is, to the extent of comprehending part, but maybe not all of what I'm saying, then you might be getting it--or maybe there will be a delayed reaction.

You might wake up tonight or in the wee hours of the dark morning chucking about this post.  Or you might find yourself laughing out of nowhere ten years from now and then suddenly realize it's because of what Arlee said in this current post.  Or even when you are in the far reaches of old age lying on your death bed finally getting what I once said, you might burst out laughing to the astonishment of loved ones gathered around your bedside as you vaguely recollect the gist of what has been written in this post.  Even if you don't remember exactly that it was this blog post or it was me who had said what was said here.   What a great satisfaction for me if you were to literally die laughing because of something I said so many years before.  I'll likely already be dead too, but it would still be a smile on my face if I knew it happened.

Now, what I'm saying might not really be what you think you are reading.  In fact I might not even totally fathom the extent of my words in this blog post.  Just because I'm brilliant doesn't necessarily mean that I know everything immediately, but it only means I know more than you.  I am truly funny.   Hilarious.  Humor beyond all human comprehension.  Laughable I know, but because it's so brilliant you will eventually get the joke.  Even if you die arriving at the punchline.

My guess is that someone reading this is irritated and annoyed, thinking, "What a pompous ass this Arlee Bird is."   Some guy somewhere is probably stroking his beard in perplexity, almost angry and brimming with frustration, knowing that I'm probably right--no, not probably, but he knows I am absolutely correct and there's nothing he can do to forget my words, until one day sad and misty eyed he will began to slightly smile and then burst into uproarious laughter that purges his sorrow and opens his heart to the complete awareness of the regret he has never understood until that brief uproariously funny moment when he realizes that the funniest guy in the world was me, Arlee Bird.

Arlee Bird--The funniest, the smartest, the most acutely aware guy in the world.  And perhaps the most delusional.  But by then it all comes together as the beautiful most perfect delusion that brings laughter to all the world even though no one yet hears that laughter.

If a joke falls upon an empty brain, does anyone laugh?

Did this post annoy you, anger you, perplex you, or make you feel anything at all?  What has been the most inappropriate moment of your life when you found something to be funny?   Do you feel that posts like I have written here are a waste of time?   Are you going to waste your time watching the Academy Awards?

#IWSG & Battle of the Bands: It's My Life

Another month, another edition of the Insecure Writer's Support Group, the monthly event sponsored by the blogging master Alex J. Cavanaugh.   Click on the link to find out more.  Also, I'm combining this post with my bi-monthly Battle of the Bands post--more on that later,  First, my insecurity for this month

It's My Life--Kind of Maybe

This week I'm on call for jury duty.  It's the second time this year since I didn't get put on a jury the first time around.   Jury duty is something that I can no longer get out of even though I don't really want to participate, but if I don't then I risk getting in trouble with the law.  Whose life is it anyway?

The government puts certain restrictions on what I can do and can't do.  When I was working, my job put a lot of limitations on my life.  I accepted that because I liked getting a paycheck.  Even now if the right job came my way I'd be willing to give up part of my personal life to merge it with a work life.

Our lives are filled with compromises, cooperative efforts, and trade-offs.   We have the things we need to do, want to do, kind of have to do in accordance with societal expectations, or feel an obligation to do within the context of those around us.   We are not isolated beings who operate totally on our own, but we are codependent in a social sense even if not so in the dysfunctional psychological definition of the term.

What I'm trying to say is that much of my messed up writing ambitions are certainly my own fault.  I've got a lot of control over my time and what I do with it.  Still there are family and personal obligations that I must attend to sometimes.  There are chores and life duties that must be looked after.  I give some time to church and community.

Time is limited therefore I must take better control of it.  But there's always something to distract me from writing.  I admire all of you who are cranking out books and stories and other writings on top of doing whatever else it is you do.

Yeah, it's my life and I've got a lot of choices.   Getting things done takes commitment, focus, and structure.   But it seems like a lot of people want a piece of me.   I feel like Janis Joplin when she sings, "Take another little piece of my heart".   That's life I guess.  My life, but not totally.

Battle of the Bands:  It's My Life

And now Battle of the Bands, the epic event where music loving bloggers offer up two different versions of one song for you to vote on your favorite one.   This popular event which has been ongoing for over a year now was founded by Stephen T McCarthy and Faraway Eyes.   After you vote on my pairing, please visit their posts and vote on theirs.   More possible participants will be listed at the end of this post.

Talk Talk "It's My Life" (1984)

I was not a big fan of Talk Talk when I first heard them.   They seemed kind of weird to me.  The music was somewhat morose, brooding and introspective.  I bought a couple of their cassettes out of curiosity knowing virtually nothing about their music.  With repeated listenings their music grew on me until now I like them quite well.   "It's My Life" is one of their songs that is a favorite of mine.

No Doubt "It's My Life"  (2003)

Gwen Stefani puts a more sultry touch to the vocals and the synthpop sound of Talk Talk is not as prevalent.  There is more energy to this version though it stays relatively close to the original in the arrangement.   No doubt that No Doubt's version is a different take on the original recording by Talk Talk.

Time to Vote!

Which do you prefer?   I hope you'll vote, but it's your life and you can do as you like in regards to voting in this Battle of the Bands post.   But please take time to vote in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the one you chose.  Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around.   And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.
