This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Don't Worry ( #BOTB Results )

Anxiety weighs down the heart,  but a kind word cheers it up.

Proverbs 12:25 New International Version (NIV)

Pondering the Colorado River in Austin Texas

Pandemic Days

There's so much for people to worry about these days that it's difficult to know where to start.  Maybe it's best to start by not worrying.  Jesus said not to worry (Matthew 6:25-34) and if you don't take any stock in what Jesus had to say then just use common sense.  How are you going to make things better by worrying?

If you find yourself consumed by worry then maybe you need to take some action to take your mind off of that worry.  After all, worry is essentially an act of selfishness if no action is taken to find ways to remedy that which is worrying you.  Worry is wasted effort which culminates in no positive result.  If all you do is worry then you aren't working towards personal wellness and your worry can become more contagious than the worst disease.

Would you rather be spreading the negative energy of worry or the positive energy of hope, concern for others, and the mindset that things will get better?

Sometimes children know best.  Here's a story that my daughter Ada Z shared recently about my dear granddaughter, Grace, who is seven years old:

My daughter, Grace, had a dream the other night. She said,
“We were sitting around the campfire as a family and God came down to sit with us. He started singing a song about the world. Then he ate a marshmallow. Everything is going to be ok”
I asked her how she knew that it was God. She said, “It was definitely God”.
The smile that she had on her face and the twinkle in her eye gave me so much hope and it has truly gotten me through the last few days.

Thank you for that sweet story, Ada, and bless the wisdom of my granddaughter, Gracie.  She put into words with elegant simplicity the advice I've been trying to live by over the past decade or so.  Eat marshmallows and sing happy songs.  Everything will turn out just fine--or at least the way it's supposed to work out.

Battle of the Bands Results

My Martyr Battle

My most recent Battle saw "Joan of Arc" by Jennifer Warnes go up against "The Martyr" by prog rock group Wally.  As some of you might have guessed, my favorite was the song by Wally.   However either of the albums that these songs came from are big favorites of mine.  The voting ran close at the beginning of the race, but then Wally broke out ahead to capture the win.

   Final Vote Tally

Jennifer Warnes     5 votes

Wally                       9 votes

Next Battle on Wednesday April 1st

This is going to be a big day in blogging since this will also be the start of Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2020.   So far nearly 300 blogs are signed up to the official list, but many more will be participating through social media sites like Facebook.  If you're basically locked down for the current pandemic then why not join us in A to Z.  This seems like the year to do it.

And wait!  There's more!   April 1st will also be the posting date for Insecure Writer's Support Group.  So it's gonna be a whopper of a blogging day.  I've pulled all these together in one post in previous years so I guess I can do it again.

Please be well.  And don't be afraid.

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Thought I'd post this last minute Mother's Day video message that was created by my daughter Ada Z.   She's been doing some great video work (not just my opinion).  Hope you enjoy it!  Please share with others and maybe you can go to YouTube and "Like" Ada's video and maybe add your comment of support on that page.   Comments below are also welcomed.

Don't forget the Moms in your life.  Mother's Day (in the U.S.) is this Sunday May 13th.

And Now the Intensity Begins

Part One is Nearly Done

My first three weeks of "vacation" have been relatively computer friendly.  Though I've not been able to visit all of your blogs as much as I might when I'm home, I have nevertheless been able to make reasonable rounds in keeping up with many of your blogs.  Sorry to those of you I have missed, but I think you might understand.

So far I've been able to keep up with the Battle of the Bands posts reasonably well and I've managed to continue posting on my blog Wrote By Rote where I've been attempting to report on my vacation activities and reflect on my trip in general.  Things are about to change I think.

First of all I need to wrap up as much as I can here in Tennessee. My time is running out here and there's much to do.  I will not get it all done, but I'll focus on the main things.  For more on my thoughts about this you can read my most recent post at Wrote By Rote.

Moving On

On Thursday I'll be departing for a brief visit to Charlotte, NC where I'll be visiting my old employer's headquarters and catching up with some of my old work friends.  Friday night I'll head up to Danville, Virginia where I'll be seeing my son.    Then Sunday I'll start making my way to New Jersey where I'll be for three more weeks.  This is when my blogging time might get pinched.   I'll likely be doing a lot of  babysitting and playing the Grandpa role for my four grandchildren who live there.

For one thing, a new grand baby arrived on July 8th.  Thomas John Z came into this world at 20 inches long with a weight of 8 lbs 10 oz.  Mama Ada Z has her hands full already with a four year old and an eighteen-month old.  She is going to have to have the patience of a saint in the years ahead.  Some of you might remember my daughter Ada Z as the designer of the badge for the 2012 A to Z Challenge.

Thomas John Z born July 8, 2015

Proud Dad Tom Sr had been starting to feel overwhelmed in a house full of females so now he has an ally in Baby Tom.  My son-in-law is a big Chicago Bears fan and an ex-football player himself and I'm sure he'll have his son in training with the pigskin as soon as he can.  Mama Ada already has reported that she calms the new arrival best when she hums the "Bear Down" song.  I don't know that song, but I guess I'll be learning it soon enough.

Proud big sister Lillee with new baby brother.
Giving Ada ample time to tend to Baby Thomas I'll be spending time with the sisters Lillee and Grace and also my other granddaughter Marley who will soon be 7 years old.  I'm sure by the time my wife arrives from Houston on August 5th I'll be welcoming her relief in helping me with the girls.  And I know she's excited as well to see all of the New Jersey grandkids.

Time Flies!

My month in New Jersey will fly by I know.   I've got granddad duties slated for that time, but hopefully there will also be some time for my blogging duties.  Maybe I'll still be able to meet with some bloggers if meetings can be arranged.  Also I'm waiting for word concerning a meeting in the Big Apple.  If I can swing this it could have some big implications for me.  I'm hoping, but I'm also prepared for it all to fall through.  Life goes on no matter what and I will simply make up a new strategy if that's what's necessary.  I'm not saying any more about this since right now there's not much to say.

I've got Battle of the Bands posts scheduled through August so those will be appearing on the proper days.  I hope I can participate adequately for each posting--I will do my best.  The one that will probably pose the biggest problem for me is the BOTB post on August 15th.  I'll be in the midst of the most intensive travel days of all as we make our way across the country back to L.A.  Then my life will be back to normal--or maybe better.  Time will tell and that telling will come quickly.

Be sure to come back this Wednesday July 15th for my next Battle of the Bands when I'll be featuring a song about the distance of a notable celestial body.

Will I be anywhere near you in the weeks to come?   Can you guess what my song choice will be in the next Battle of the Bands?   Anyone want to come help me babysit?

My #atozchallenge Theme for April: Film Genres A to Z

Click on Badge to sign up!

In my recent post for Alex Cavanaugh's Movie Countdown Blogfest, I mentioned that my list of movies would be hinting toward my Blogging from A to Z Challenge theme.  Well, the first big hint was the list of movies.  I am a big fan of movies and there are many movies that I like far more than others.

My April theme will be some of my favorite films based on film genres A to Z.   An example as a preview is my first post.   For "A" the genre will be films about automobile accidents.  That should give you some idea of where this will be going.

So that's it!  Keeping it short today.  I've got 26 movie posts to get ready.  Yeah, that's right--I haven't even started.   This could be a train wreck.   Hmm--what are some movies about train wrecks?

Blog Disaster!

I'm not the only one with blogging problems.  Our co-host Stephen Tremp was banished from Blogger!  Hopefully this will only be temporary, but in the meantime you can find Stephen at his new blog address http://stephentremp.wordpress.com/.   Hope you retrieve the old blog successfully Stephen.

Connections:  The Circle of A to Z Life

During the 2011 pre-challenge build-up, I got some promotional time for the A to Z Challenge on the Dennis and Judi radio show on FM 101.5 in New Jersey.  We got some sign ups as a result of that brief appearance.

For the 2012 Challenge our official badge was designed by appropriately named artist Ada Z.   Ada also contributed a video to the A to Z Video Challenge.

This past week Ada Z posted on YouTube a video commercial parody related to Dennis and Judi.  The station picked it up and featured it on the station website.  It's pretty clever and very short.  I've embedded the YouTube clip below.   Take a moment to enjoy the clip and perhaps you can visit the station site and leave a comment.   Let them know you're from the A to Z Challenge.  Who knows?   Maybe we'll get another mention on the air.    If you can, tweet or pass on the video for others to see to help Ada Z get her work noticed by more people.

Have you got an A to Z theme?   Have you ever lost your blog and had to start a new one?   Have you tried to get the A to Z Challenge promoted through any conventional media sources?
