This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Holiday Fun ( #BOTB & #IWSG ).

Sometimes what you think you're going to get is not what you really get.  And sometimes you just get something without thinking about it.  The real question is did you get what you really needed?

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and  StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   I do this event  each month on the 15th and the 1st of the month.  The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

A Couple of Holiday Songs

Before you get into a Christmas mood, let me start off by saying that this is no Battle of Songs of the Season.  Instead we have two perhaps seemingly disparate musical pieces from two different decades that have much more in common than one might expect. Both songs have "Holiday" in their titles and both are pretty weird while at the same time being quite musically complex.  To me it's sheer fun.

I grew up loving the music and performance antics of Spike Jones and His Orchestra.  Years later I became enthralled with the music of Frank Zappa.  Like my own musical experience growing up, Zappa was greatly influenced by Spike Jones.  I think it is reasonable to say that without Spike Jones there would not be the Frank Zappa that many of us have come to appreciate.

Here is a "Holiday" piece from each artist--one an original composition by Zappa against Spike's cover of the David Rose of "Stripper" fame's classic "Holiday for Strings".  Enjoy and then tell us which you liked best.

Frank Zappa  "Holiday in Berlin" (1970)

Spike Jones   "Holiday for Strings"  (1945)

Time to Vote!

It's not your holiday yet so get to work and vote on this Battle.   Which song interpretation do you prefer?  Battles are no fun without you the reader participating.
Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.

December 3 question - As a writer, what was one of the coolest/best gifts you ever received?

I don't know that I've necessarily received any "gifts" as a writer.  As a blogger I've received many items as giveaways, prizes, or maybe you could call them gifts.  But since I've been writing since I was a kid--I'd say that makes me a writer--I guess I'd have to include the many books, writing materials, and other similar items that influenced my writing that were given to me as gifts by my parents.  Otherwise I don't think I've gotten gifts specifically intended for me as a writer.  Come to think of it, I don't get many gifts anymore.  Since I hit Social Security age, gift exchanging doesn't fit into my budget like it used to.

One unexpected gift was sent to me out of the blue by one of my regular blogging Battle of the Bands voters a while back.  That person who goes by Six-Gun sent me a copy of a book called Lee After the War by Marshall W. Fishwick.  What a terrific book that even a year or more after having read it, I still think about it.  It's a book that I'd highly recommend especially to anyone interested in Civil War history.  Thank you Six-Gun!

Christmas is a-rapidly on it's way.  Don't get caught up in too much frenzy.  I plan to stay home a lot this Christmas.

So, bah humbug, and everybody have a truly wonderful Christmas season!

What gift have you received as a writer?  Did I get the question wrong?   Have you ever known me to be wrong?

  1. I think both pieces were just a little too odd for me.
Took me a while to think of a writing related gift. I had to go with something influential like you did.

    1. Alex, these are both like the musicians' musicians. I'd think you'd appreciate what these guys were doing.

No vote for starters. A bad sign.

  2. You're right this is a weird battle. And, definitely not "holiday" songs. lol Hey, that's okay! There's going to be plenty of Christmas tunes floating around to lift everyone through the madness this month. I'm one of these people who can't seem to get enough Christmas music. Anyway, The first track has that funky 70 vibe and I thought, "I dunno". I moved on the second track in the line up. The harp in the beginning was nice and I thought, "Yeah, this might be the one! until it the song hit some craziness that was nearly comical. So, I went back to the Frank's song and decided his wasn't so bad after all. Maybe, it's just too early for either of these cuts and then maybe they just aren't really for me. Nonetheless, it was great fun to listen to something different.

I don't know that I consider myself much of a writer. I like to think I'm more of a conversationalist that is when I take the time to place my thoughts out there for someone to read, but as far as gifts for the writer self, nope never got anything. I guess it's all my parents' fault right? ROFL My writing interests as a kid were limited, so I can't blame them. Interesting question anyhow.

Staying home for December might be a safe and sane thing to do. I dread thinking about having to go anywhere. Hopefully, we won't have to venture out into stores much this month. Have a funtastic week, Lee!

    1. Cathy, I like the idea of being a conversationalist though I don't often seem to have many people to converse with. Thank goodness for the telephone.

I knew my BOTB picks were weird, but I didn't realize I'd get the reactions that I've gotten.

I'm putting you down for Frank Zappa.

  3. I'm a big fan of Spike Jones and of "Holiday For Strings," si I vote for that. I do remember "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" as being a great album, though.

I definitely gotta vote for Spike Lee-- er... I mean, Spike Jones. His recording literally had me chuckling. Listening to Spike Jones music is similar to watching Tex Avery cartoons.

  7. I have to admit...I dislike both but I was very close to hitting the stop button on the comedian so, based on that, I choose the first one.
When I was 8 or 9, I was very, very ill with over 104 fever Christmas Eve. My dad and brother went to dinner at the Aunt and Uncle's place but came home early. Mom stayed with me and placed warm wet towel wrapped around my legs to suck the fever out. We were going to open the gifts on the 25th...which we never do, but my brother asked to open just one. We did and then he pleaded for 1 more. We'll, sometime past and, still feeling ill, I got a book on film stars from my brother. I didn't care about anything else and kept reading. By the end, the presents were all.unwrapped a d I had no more fever

    1. Birgit, not getting much love on this match, but it is a weird one for most people who didn't grow up with the likes of Spike.

Christmas memories can be so magical!

  8. Hi Lee -

I am glad you enjoyed the book! I liked it too. I think that Robert E. Lee was - in addition to being America's greatest general - a truly great and honorable man. He did not choose "the south" because he liked slavery; he chose to fight for the South because he felt he owed his allegiance to the State of Virginia.

These two pieces are indeed way out there. I love Spike but I often have trouble figuring out exactly what Zappa is going for... which is the case here. I don't dislike the Zappa number, but I don't entirely "get it." So another vote for Spike!

  9. Hi Lee. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.
Wow, these are definitely two very interesting pieces. When the second one started playing with the horns, I thought oh this is gonna be a tough one — but then it started to get buggy. And, as in real life, I run from bugs and I definitely ran from “Holiday from Strings.” It just got too weird and discombobulated — at times it sounded like something you’d hear at a circus from yesteryear, and I can’t even begin to put into words what other parts sounded like to me …it felt that bizarre.

Now Frank Zappa’s version was much easier to listen to. Couple that with the fact that just in the past few weeks I’ve come to appreciate Frank Zappa and his musical genius. I featured him in my most recent blog post. Stop by and check it out- it’s a great backstory and it involves another creative musician, Gene Simmons.

I can definitely hear Zappa’s complex musicianship in his song here.
My vote is most definitely for Zappa and his “Holiday in Berlin.”

    Thanks for the interesting selections!

    1. Michele, I guess you didn't grow up on the wackiness of Spike Jones like I did. Zappa was rock based so that is more comfortable for many of us.

  10. A book is always a great gift.

I saw Dweezle (sp?) Does Zappa and thought most of it sounded the same, like one big beach song. Might've been Dweezle's spin on it.

    1. L.Diane, I've always been happy to receive a book as a gift. Books can be so rewarding and last for years.

Frank Zappa's son Dweezil probably stayed pretty true to his Dad's music. I think like most complex music one has to listen carefully to start getting the nuances and flavors of the artist. Zappa is certainly not for everyone.

A quiet Christmas is a good Christmas. It is the time where I reflect and read. I think I will read the book about the Civil War, Lee After The War.
I passed on the music. Neither Spike Jones nor Zappa were my taste for music.
