This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

What Have You Done For Me Lately (#BOTB)

Crap!  My computer decided to do another upgrade or something and is taking a long time to work again.  Long story condensed, I'm borrowing my wife's laptop.  This post will be simpler than usual...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

What Have You Done for Me Lately

It all started when I was reading about a group called Deerhoof.  Or maybe I had seen a video or heard their music somewhere.  Anyway, I read where they'd recorded a version of the song made famous by Janet Jackson.  So looking for it on YouTube I didn't find it, but I found other versions of the song and figured, why not?  There's another Battle for me.

I don't know anything about these artists and I'm not going to do the research.  I just want to get off this computer.  Here they are.  You decide...

Naytronix (ft tUnE-yArDs) - What Have You Done For Me Lately  (2015)

Lee Being   "What Have You Done for Me Lately"  (?)

Time to Vote!

Okay, so I know this might not be your cuppa Joe, but maybe you can suck it up and play along.  Please?   Which version do you prefer?   Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

    1. Alex, Yeah, unusual I guess.

      Another vote for Naytronix.

  3. I go for Lee bing because it’s quirky but I enjoyed it and the time went by fast. The first one was a a bit long and I felt the time went slowly by. Lee is fun so they get my vote.

    1. Birgit, Funny that they are both about the same amount of time in length, but I get what you're saying.

      A vote for Lee Being.

  4. I disliked Naytronix less, so they get my vote.

Yeah, not my mug o' beer, either.

I got up to 2:53 in the first recording before I said, "OK, that's enough of THAT".

The second recording reminded me a bit of David Bowie when he was going through his (f)art Rock / Disco phase. Not that I think it was a good thing. And my Brother, who was here in the same room with me, asked me to shut off the second song when it got to the 4:02 point.

So, since I played the second recording one minute and forty-nine seconds longer than the first, I guess that's the one I'll vote for. But I found the song vapid and obnoxiously repetitive.

    1. STMcC, this is a throwaway week for me with my computer woes. It's better now, but I almost didn't even do a Battle this time.

Again, my musical eclecticism and open-mindedness is not appreciated by the BOTB regulars, but this didn't surprise me.

I think this music is maybe something like Trip Hop or Acid House or some category that I'm not sure I can identify, but I liked both of these. Not going to listen to them on a regular basis, but they didn't strike me as badly as they did you and others.

      A vote for Lee Being.

  6. Lee,

I'm giving my vote to NAYTRONIX. Interesting battle, my friend. Have a bandtastic week and when you get a chance stop by to cast your vote in my BoTB!

    1. Cathy, I'm not sure how interesting this Battle is, but it seemed to be appropriate for my circumstances this particular week.

      A vote for Naytronix.

  7. Neither of these have done anything for me lately, nor in the past, neither in the future. Sorry your computer crapped out on you again.

I was going to vote for the first one, but in the middle of the night 130000 votes were dropped off by a Ferrari, a Chrysler 300, and a beat up white van that were all marked for the second. So it "wins.

    1. Well, Sixgun, you just haven't heard these recordings enough times. If you listen to each one 666,000 times, I'm sure you'll (eventually) find *something* to like about each recording.

You jus' ain't properly hypnotized, and self-deluded, and brainwashed yet. You'll learn to love 'em if you jus' don't give up on 'em. At some point, the "Musical Stockholm Syndrome" will kick in for ya.

    2. 6-Gun, I must have had some reason for putting this Battle in my queue other than my Deerhoof story. I guess there was something I liked about it at the time. I have a lot of Battle matches in my queue that are like that. For now I ask my computer what it has done for me lately other than suck up time with nonsense.

If I deciphered the vote correctly it goes to...

      Lee Being (?)

    3. Ha Ha! You deciphered it right.

I think that this particular battle was the result of Dominion Systems infiltrating your computer and substituting this battle for the one you had planned. Can't trust these computers and their tech overlords.

  8. I have got to go along with STMc, except I don't think I made it as far as he did into that first one. A good mix tape gift for your worst enemy overall.

    1. CW, not even a vote to play along? Or are you saying you're going along with the STMC grudge vote? Okay, I'll go with that.

      A vote for Lee Being.

  9. Computer woes are so aggravating! Mine crashed after the last update, so I'm using the old one with the wonky keyboard. As for the battle, I can't say this genre of music does anything for me, but Lee Being was slightly more tolerable than Naytronix.

    1. Debbie D, I'm sick of computer updates. I don't even understand what's being updated other than my computer going down for a few days after an update happens. I think it's some kind of scam.

This is not music I'd listen to very often, but sometimes I just get a hankering for something quirky I guess.

      A vote for Lee Being.

  10. Sorry to hear about your computer problems. I'm lucky my older computer from 2007 still works, since it's come in handy during issues with my newer model. Some programs run a bit slower now, but it does everything it should do.

My vote is for Lee Being. I like the weirdness of it.

    1. Carrie-Anne, my computer is back until the next update I guess. I still keep a computer that must be nearly 20 years old just to play solitaire and occasionally print labels.

  11. I'll go off book and vote for the Janet Jackson version.
I hope your November went as well as it could and that you'll experience joy in the coming holiday season.
There's a giveaway on my blog that ends today, if you're interested.
