This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Battle in the Bayou: Lady Madonna ( #BOTB )

Okay, now my internet seems to be running and I don't much seem to care.  Besides, it's Christmas season!  Not that I'm busy with all that, but it makes a nice excuse to be lazy...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Lady Madonna

Okay, it's not a Christmas song, but in a way the title sounds like one. So this is my contribution to the Christmas season at Battle of the Bands.  I'm sure everyone is familiar with this Beatles song so I don't think I need any reference link to the original. In fact, the first version at bat is pretty close to the original.  And in addition to that, Paul McCartney was inspired by the style of Fats Domino when he started writing the song.  So it seems appropriate to start this Battle off with the Fat Man's own rendition...

Fats Domino   "Lady Madonna"  (1968)

After he found his thrill on "Blueberry Hill", Fats Domino eventually found The Beatles song "Lady Madonna" and had a minor hit with a pretty killer version of the song.  Fats died in 2017 after a long career.in music.  Hailing from New Orleans, he was a true Louisiana gentleman...

Potliquor "Lady Madonna"  (1972)

This hard rocking band came from the next town over from New Orleans, Baton Rouge. They were among the earliest bands classified under the Southern Rock genre.  Here they are ready to testify with their version of "Lady Madonna"...

Time to Vote!
Which version of this song do you like best.?  Don't be a Grinch who doesn't vote!   Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. Which version do you like the best?   You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

Winner of this Battle Announced on Monday 23

Oh!  That's almost Christmas.  Maybe I'll get back in the internet groove in the next few days.  I'd better or I'm going to be hopelessly stuck in the swamp with emails.  Bye, you all!

  1. Merry Christmas!! Actually Happy 3rd of Advent. I am trying to get back into blogging now but still have to bake and put the tree up. I listened to both and I really do like the 2nd version of the song but my heart belongs to Fats who kept it close to the original but still made it his own.

    1. Birgit, when I started stepping back from blogging my enthusiasm for it waned. I'm in a blogging funk, but I'm in a funk about a lot of things these days. Not unhappy by any means, but in a funky place for certain things.

      First vote goes to...

      Fats Domino.

  2. This was a tough one for me! I had to listen to both of them three times before coming to a decision. Both bring good elements to the song. But after a deliberation, I'm giving my vote to Potliquor.

    1. Mary B, I was pleasantly surprised by the Fats version, but I've been listening to the Potliquor version since 1972 and really like that one.

  4. This is not a favorite Beatles song, and neither version lights my fire.

This will sound harsh, but (using verbal shorthand) Fats always seemed like a one-hit wonder, and even that one song was "meh." I remember it coming out as a kid and thinking "the Twist is stupid!" I didn't care for his voice much either. If you put him up against the other African American singers of the late 50s thru 60s... they all win.

And Potliquor? Though I've never heard of 'em, they are better 'n Fats. But they are not fabulous. I suspect if they were singing a southern rock song I'd like them better.

    1. 6-Gun, that does seem rather harsh. Maybe you were just in a bad mood when you cast your vote?

I never kept up with Domino's music and only remember "Blueberry Hill". Listening to his music now I have a more favorable impression of him.

I've only heard Potliquor's Levee Blues album which I bought on vinyl shortly after it was released. I think it's pretty solid rock and roll. They were an excellent band though they never made it very big in the national music scene. More of a regional band.

Though you don't seem enthusiastic about either version, your comment seems to lean toward Potliquor so that's how I'll record your "vote".

      Potliquor.

    2. Well, I don't know if I was in a bad mood when I voted, but I DO know I had my head up my behind.

I was multitasking and hurrying when I typed my comment, and I confused Fats with Chubby Checker. What a maroon! My comments above therefore reflect my attitude about CHECKER, not Fats. Fats is way better. Sorry I goofed that up.

Now that I have cleared that mistake up: I am still voting for Potstickers.

    3. I thought the Twist reference seemed out of place so I did a search to see if Fats ever did any Twist records and seeing that he did, I just shrugged it off.

I kind of liked that Twist craze back in the sixties. My father even had us all doing the Twist at the end of our juggling act for a while. I felt silly doing that, but it made me laugh then and still does now.

  5. Interesting Battle, LEE.

I had never heard either of these renditions before, and in fact, I had never even heard of Potliquor before, either.

This was an easy one for me: FATS DOMINO by a mile and a half!

In fact, I'll go ahead and say it: I liked Fats' cover better'n the original by The Beatles.

    1. STMcC, actually you have heard of Potliquor as they were in my OCT 1st Battle in 2013 and that's who you voted for then albeit with a lack of enthusiasm.

  6. Lee,

After a two week blog hiatus, I'm not sure that I want to return. This is not only the busy season but it does give one the lazies. Well, is it really lazy as much as just wanting to relax to enjoy the festivities of this beautiful time of the year? I think it's the later. :)

I enjoyed Fats version of 'Lady Madonna' but it's Potliquor rendition I liked the best. I like their southern rock cover vibe. I can't believe I haven't heard of them before today, so thank you, my friend. Have a joyful and blessed day!

    1. Cathy, I know when I get out of the groove of an activity I am often reluctant to return to it. And being online can be such a time drain.

Admittedly I think the group was somewhat before your time and they didn't release much after their biggest album in 1972.

      A vote for Potliquor.

  7. Fats gets my vote, not just because he's Fats, but because I didn't like Potliquor's approach to the song. By the way, Fats does a great cover of The Beatles' "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey," too.

  11. Having stopped at Sixgun's comment, I know you've heard this all before. Lady Madonna, by no means my least favorite Beatle's tune, but far from a favorite. Fats to me sang that like he wasn't really interested in even recording it. Ptoliquor showed enthusiasm, and that's about all I can ask on this one. Potliquor for me.

Was the Beatles release of this on 45 only, when it was new, or was it also an album track? I cannot recall.
