This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme
My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Money ( #AtoZChallenge )
I had a dream where I found a lot of money in my house. Then I woke up. All day I was trying to think where that money was and how it got there in the first place...
Money Places
One clutter problem that I wouldn't mind having more of is the money that gets strewn about a house. Most of you probably have a similar situation of change thrown in drawers or other places. Since I don't typically accumulate much change in my pockets, I don't have too many places where money ends up. Most of my loose change is in a drawer where I toss it or in my van by the driver's seat.
A friend in Tennessee was telling me how he throws all of his change in coffee cans that he keeps in the kitchen. He uses cash for everything and consequently always ends up with change. He told me that once a year he empties the cans to take the change to the bank. His last visit reaped him over $300 he said. Maybe that isn't that bad of a way to save money
If I could say that I had too much money laying around then apparently I'd be far wealthier than I am now. Maybe it would have been a good idea to clutter my life with more pocket change and stray dollar bills. I keep hoping that someday I'll find that secret stash of cash that I had forgotten about. I don't think I'm going to find it, but if I do find it then I'll be a pretty happy fellow. That is until I've spent it all and then I guess I'll still be happy just as though I had never found that forgotten treasure.
Have you ever found a cache of money that you or someone else had hidden and forgotten? Where do you tend to throw your loose change? What is the most amount of change that you've ever cashed in at a bank or coin machine?

Great post Lee, I have come to realise that money isn't everything in life......but it helps.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.
Yvonne.
Yvonne, I rarely turn down money if it's offered, but I also try to be as generous as I can.

We have a jar on my dresser that we put all the change in. It's almost full so I guess time for a new one. It's just a small jar. No $300 there.
ReplyDeleteKristin, I thinks the looks can be deceiving. I've been surprised by the coins caches that I've cashed in.

We keep our change for visits to Reno. Never amounts to more than $50 or so. On our recent trip, though, the casino said they no longer change the coins into dollars for you so I don't know what we'll do. Hate to give up a percentage to the coin machines.
ReplyDeleteJanet’s Smiles
Janet, casinos have changed. I guess the tickets are more convenient, but I always liked the sound of the coins if someone got a nice win.

My mother-in-law had envelopes ull of money hidden all over their apartment, and after she died we found all of it. There must have been $1000. That's what the old-timers did.
ReplyDeleteJohn, sometimes I think I have envelopes like that hidden around, but I don't know where any are. Guess I'm becoming an old-timer.

I found a $20 in a coat pocket once that I hadn’t worn in months . Happy day!
ReplyDeleteGail, always a delightful surprise. I always am checking pockets just in case.

I know a few old guys that have 1000 bills buried somewhere in their yard. Never much around here, need to have it first haha
ReplyDeletePat, I used to bury money when I was a kid, but it was never too much. Wouldn't do it now. Not in my backyard.

We have a plastic jug in the kitchen for our spare change. I take it to coinstar and use it for an amazon gift cert cause they give you the full value. If you want cash, they take a percentage. So I call the jug my 'amazon.com fund'. lol
ReplyDeleteJoJo, that's a cool way to approach the change if you get a lot. I have a plastic jug that's over 50 years old that I've been putting change in over the years. Now I only put pre-1963 coins in it. It's not growing very fast.

I wish I could find a stash of cash, but the closest I get is when I find loose change in my husband's pockets while doing laundry.
ReplyDeleteTrudy, the treasure chest filled with money would be very nice, but loose change is better than nothing I suppose.

In the early 2000s, my dad hurt himself at work. For years, he'd been storing pocket change in a large water cooler jug. When his disability checks weren't enough to cover expenses, he and my mom sat down and poured the jingling contents of that jug out onto the floor and started rolling change. They had enough to cover their mortgage and essential bills for two months, which got them through til he was recovered enough to go back to work.
ReplyDeleteMrs Fever, I've seen a lot of people with huge water jugs with change in them. Those will hold a lot. What a blessing at the right time for your family!

Every few years, I find treasures in pockets of winter clothes, when I switch 'em out for the seasons.
ReplyDeleteHappy A-Z. Thanks for leading it each year. Back this time with two blogs (Nickers and Ink & Runderdog: Runleashed and Runstoppable). And we are midway through April already!
Linda, I tend not to put money in coat pockets so I don't find that, but I do often find emergency Kleenex as well as hard candies or cough drops.
DeleteThank you for joining us for another year of A to Z. Also, my immense thanks to our top notch A to Z Team for 2018.

I used to save 'small change' in bottles - smallest bottle only took tiny Dutch coins, called dubbeltje = with a value of a tenth of a Dutch guilder. The 10-euro-cent coin is currently also called a dubbeltje in the Netherlands. I think I hoarded them as they were 'cute' then discontinued. LOL
ReplyDeleteRoland, bad news when money gets discontinued. But maybe they are still collectible? Or will be one day?

My daughter claims most of the money found around the house and I have been dubbed the change leaker.
ReplyDeleteMike, when I was a kid my mother let me keep any change I'd find in the house and car. It was a nice supplement to my meager weekly allowance.

Lee,
ReplyDeleteI don't use cash much, either. Whenever I do have lose change then I keep it in a small container on top of the microwave. Years ago, I used to accumulate several dollars worth in coins that I stored in a mason jar. My MIL did the same and often times she'd pass it to us but usually had $20+ saved. That was a welcome to have it, too. It doesn't sound like a lot but when you're tight on money from raising a family then every little bit helps. I do recall one time when I was a kid, I don't know what prompted me to do this but for some reason I stumbled upon a little rain puddle that was filled with coins. I don't recall how much it was but it was a least a dollar in change that someone no doubt dropped out of the vehicle. I fished the money out and went to the store buying a little stash of candy. lol Oh the things one remembers!
Thanks for visiting my iPad Art Sketch'M' is for my favorite Monster A2Z post on Saturday, my friend. I'm playing catch up this morning after spending all weekend with DH. Have a good day and happy A2Zing!
Cathy, it's always a thrill to find a surprise bounty of money. I recall finding a two dollar bill in a gutter in Canada as well as a lot of change on the ground over the years. When you're a kid and have this kind of find is like digging up a treasure.

Hi Lee!
ReplyDeleteWe turn in spare change for vacations or special occasions or when the jug gets too full - when we remember to do so ;-)
Diedre, it all will get used eventually--we hope!

Money doesn't tend to collect in my presence...
ReplyDeleteCW, yeah, mine neither. I seem to chase it away.

We do save our change, hubby rolls it and cashes it in when we go on vacation. I think he's probably cashed in a few hundred at a time. I found $250 in a purse I'd put away... that felt good! But isn't it often, that when you find money, something happens that you need it for!
ReplyDeleteJeanne, I'd like to have more found money incidents in my life, but as long as I can pay my way then I'm okay.

I once found $100 that I placed in a drawer and forgot about it. As for loose change...I Place it in a jar and, last time, I had over $500 in it and bought my iPad. My jar is full again and this will go towards m6 plane fare to Vancouver where I will be heading July 1st.
ReplyDeleteI have a little plastic piggy bank in my basement laundry room where I put the money I find in the washer and dryer. I've got a pretty good little stash from over the years, and I was feeling pretty smug about it until I realized that it's all my money anyway, because I'm the only one in the house who sticks money in a pocket. My husband empties his pockets on the kitchen counter every evening. My kids never carried money with them. But it's still my little fund for taking a vacation some day (I think I can get to Galena now on it, which is about 7 miles away). I also pick up money I find in parking lots, on sidewalks, in stores, etc. It's usually only a penny, but 99 more of them and I can get a fountain drink, so I bend over and pick them up!
