This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Let's Run (#BOTB) (#IWSG)

In this post I will be debuting the song "Let's Run" which was written for my favorite singing star, Marley Lego.  You likely have not heard of her, but she's still a star in my eyes--she's my oldest granddaughter...

September 5 question - What publishing path are you considering/did you take, and why?

As I have mentioned in most of my posts since May, I've begun to focus on songwriting.  I've been writing songs off and on since high school, but in April I became consumed with a song that I called "Let's Run" which I dedicated to my oldest granddaughter Marley whose singing performances had inspired my writing of the song.  Later in this post I will debut the song with three different recordings.

I know very little about getting a song published.  I've seen movies and heard stories about songwriters trying to peddle songs to publishers or whoever would listen.  I've done minimal research though I know there is much information online about this topic.  Maybe I'll take this traditional approach in the weeks or months to come, but for now I'm going to just put the song out there as a sort of market test.   And to just have some fun putting something I've been talking about on my blog on actual display for public consumption.

The way I figure it, "Let's Run" is just one of many songs that I've written and new songs have been flooding my creative mind of late.  If I'm taking a bad route with this "putting-it-out-there approach then I'll do things differently the next time around.  For now I've had fun with this project and hope you listen and enjoy.  Then, once you've done that. please vote and leave your comments.

I'm counting on you readers to help me with this project which might just lead me down a publishing path.   I've seen YouTube video break-outs before and I guess we just never know.  Especially when you're taking your first shot at doing something like I'm doing with my song.

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some blogs there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle on the 1st of the month.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Let's Run

As the 2018 Blogging from A to Z April Challenge was winding down I began feeling a creative surge that began to focus on music.  Songs starting invading my brain space.  This was primarily due to video performances by Marley that were being put up on Facebook.

Then an odd melody began recurring in my thoughts.  It was a very peculiar simple melodic line which in actuality was not very melodic.  As these weird notes repeated themselves in my head, words began coming along with an expanded melody until I had a song.  I decided that this was Marley's song and maybe one day she might work up a version to sing.

Why the lyrics were about running I can't really say since I've never been a runner and cannot run due to a heart arrhythmia.  But as I wrote I realized that the song was not so much about actual running as it was about persistence and staying in the race of life.  In the song life is a marathon and we need to keep on running in that race.  The message was as much for me as it is for any of us.

Here are three versions that are very different in style and approach--keep in mind that all are very rough drafts.  I hope you listen, provide your feedback, and vote for the version you like the best...

Bird/Palma/Lucero   "Let's Run" (2018)

Toward the end of May after I had finished writing "Let's Run", I happened to catch my next door neighbor Ricardo Palma as I was picking up my mail.  I complimented him on his music website space at Bandcamp which I had recently discovered.  Richard is a friend of my youngest daughter (Marley's mother) so when I mentioned my song for Marley he immediately volunteered to help me record a version with his music software program and his own musical ability.  I gladly accepted since I didn't have much to work with on my own.

Using his phone, Richard recorded me singing the song without accompaniment.  I know little about chords and writing music so it was in Richard's hands to figure out an arrangement.  Interestingly, his version was so different that what I had been hearing in my head and yet it worked very well.

I like the way Ricardo imagined the song with a sixties surf vibe--or at least that's the way that I hear it.  Someone else said it reminded him of the group The Cars.  Beyond arranging this version, Ricardo also laid down 3 guitar tracks, one percussion track, and produced the entire sound.   Another neighbor, Nate Lucero, played bass guitar and I sang the vocals.  Ricardo used the Garageband app through his computer.

If you're able to watch the video as you listen to the music you might note that I did a pretty decent job of matching the visuals to the lyric content.  All video is from my past summer's vacation. The road scenes were all shot by me while driving alone from New Jersey to Los Angeles (via Texas).   The journey segments shown start in Virginia, passing through East Tennessee and West Texas, and finally skirting a massive dust storm on I-10 just east of Phoenix.  The running kids are three of my grandkids.

By the way, I often had the CD of "Let's Run" playing loudly as I drove on my trip.  As you might agree as you watch the road footage, this song version makes for a darn good driving song...

Lonnie Carver   "Let's Run"  (2018)

Some of you probably recall that I had put out a call for other musicians to contribute their own versions of the song (an offer still open).   I only got one taker so far and that comes from my friend of 50 years, Lonnie Carver.   This multi-talented performer has been involved with music since he was a kid and continues to this day.  He's been a great friend over the years and once again he's pulled through for me with his version of "Let's Run".

Using the Garageband app installed on his Ipad, Lonnie recorded his version with just him singing while backing himself on his guitar. He gives the song a nice laid back Tennessee vibe that takes me back to my roots.  After making his recording, Lonnie sent me the file which I added to a video I made.   Once again I've used my vacation driving footage from West Texas.

             Enjoy...

Arlee Bird   "Let's Run"  (2018)

Are we ready to get weird?   As I was contemplating ideas for more cover versions of the song I remembered something I used to do back in the late seventies to make recordings of my songs.  Using two cassette decks, I would lay down a first track on one, then play that recording back while singing or playing something else over it and record that on the other tape deck.  I would record layers of sound back and forth between the decks until the sound quality was too diminished to continue.

I decided to use this approach using my video camera in my living room.  This was an exercise in ineptitude and figuring things out by trial and error.  The video took over a week to make with numerous reshoots in an attempt to come up with an acceptable product.  Eventually I settled for the version seen here.  I was tired and wanted to get this done.

During the shooting process  I did two different takes of me playing the violin and a final one with me singing in front of the big screen TV which is displaying the previously recorded layered video.  In all there are five layers of video and audio.  The percussion mostly got lost in the mix, but considering my lack of equipment the sound is not too badly balanced.

It's a bit of a mess I'll admit, but I don't think it's a total disaster.  Perhaps we can call it an interesting experiment.   See what you think...

Time to Vote!

Don't worry about hurting my feelings with your vote.  After all the song is mine and whichever version wins your vote still makes me a winner.  I just want people to listen and vote.   What's your favorite between these two choices? Which song version do you like best? You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

Diverticulitis and Other Downers (#BOTB Results)

Let me get down to business before I get to business.  After all, life is full of surprises and sometimes the pleasure gets stepped on by the business...

Battle of the Bands Results

My previous Battle between The John Mayer Trio and the pairing of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso with contrasting versions of the Jimi Hendrix song "Wait Until Tomorrow" had a surprising outcome.   This looked like a shutout with the Mayer Trio rapidly taking a lead until votes started pouring in for Veloso/Gil.  Whew!  Thanks to all who help prevent a dreaded shut out.

Actually the outcome was pretty amazing.  My vote went to Veloso/Gil because their version was unique and told the song's story better.  And I liked the percussive Brazilian style.  Mayer may have won in the end, but it was a squeaker.

Final Vote Tally

John Mayer      11 votes

Veloso/Gil        10 votes

Sometimes You Have to Wait for Tomorrow

When I prepared my previous post I knew that some negative vibes were in the air for me.  Then, the cherry was placed on top of a crap sundae.  This past Monday I ended up in the ER with severe stomach pain.  The diagnosis was diverticulitis.  I'd heard of this before and now I know a lot more about it.  For one thing it hurts--a lot.

All day Sunday I had been feeling poorly and in the evening I considered going to the ER.  But I figured that it was something that would go away after a good night's sleep.  As it turned out, I didn't get much sleep and at 4 AM I told my wife I was going to the ER.  Going to the hospital is nowhere on my list of favorite things.  I don't even like to visit a hospital.  However the staff was very nice and accommodating and got me out in about 8 hours with two prescriptions for antibiotics which so far have made me feel almost as bad I had felt previously.  Now I'll have ten days of taking those.  Hopefully I'll get more accustomed to the side effects.  I just have to wait until tomorrow I guess to see if I feel better.

As I indicated on August 1st, my current post would provide an update about my Cover Version Challenge of my song "Let's Run".   I had put out a call to any singers/musicians/producers to make a cover version to be pitted in my next Battle of the Bands post.   So far no luck from the blogging community.  I still need to reach out to more of my musician friends to see if anyone wants to take me up on this. Over all though, my mind has not been focused on this so I haven't done very much about it.

I'm still trying to stay optimistic about this Cover Version Challenge, but seeing as how I only have a week before my next BOTB post I doubt whether this Battle will take place on August 15th.  If not then that's okay--I'll extend it to the Battle of September 1.  If anyone is interested in doing this, I will send rough recordings of the melody line and partial vocals along with a lyric sheet. You just have to let me know an email address where to send it.

Also I'm going to add an alternative approach.  If you'd rather just come up with your own melody behind my lyrics then we can be song collaborators.  And once I'm back to a better performance level I will continue to try to come up with another cover myself.

That's the update for now.  We'll find out more in my next post...

Next Battle of the Bands on Wednesday August 15th!

What will it be?  You'll have to come back to find out.

Have you ever experienced diverticulitis?   Are you good at improvising when things don't turn out like you planned or hoped?    Do you have any other suggestions where I might find someone who might be interested in participating in my Cover Version Challenge

Ask Arlee: 30 questions about music

Here's a fun thing that I found at Mitch Mitchell's I'm Just Sharing...,  You may even want to do this one at your own blog since it's an entertaining good time.  Mitch says that for him "it started with this guy Lamarr Wilson who mentioned that he saw a Tumblr post of someone (he mentions the guy but didn’t link to it) who had 30 questions on music and that he wanted to answer some of them for his video post. He tackled 10 of them, doing a bit of performing for each of them as well.  There's also a video of a lady named Tomeka Haywood who did a video response to Lamarr’s video."

In my list I've included links to the songs.  Click on the song title if you want to hear the song.  Of course it would probably take a couple hours to listen to them all, but you didn't have anything else to do did you?  If you do your own list, be sure to let me know so I can come to check it out.

        Music Asks:

1: A song you like with a color in the title  "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf

2: A song you like with a number in the title "99 1/2 (Won't Do)"  CCR version is my favorite.

3: A song that reminds you of summertime  "Summer in the City"  Lovin' Spoonful

4: A song that reminds you of someone you would rather forget about  There's no one in my life history that I want to forget about, but there are people who have left me with negative feelings.  A song that I might relate to this is "Hold Me Now" by the Thompson Twins

5: A song that needs to be played LOUD  Anything by Led Zeppelin.   I'll go with "Dancing Days"

6: A song that makes you want to dance  You'll probably never find me doing it, but I love those big choreographed productions of Michael Jackson's "Thriller".   There must be hundreds of these flash mob videos on YouTube.  I've linked to one that was done by a dance academy in New Orleans.

7: A song to drive to   "Radar Love" by Golden Earring

8: A song about drugs or alcohol  "Pills Blues"  The Rockets (the group that later became Neil Young's back-up group Crazy Horse).

9: A song that makes you happy  "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys

10: A song that makes you sad  "When I Fall in Love" The version I've linked to is the wistful rendition done by Nat King Cole.  It's a beautiful romantic song, but it makes me kind of sad.  The expectations we have about love are often idealized and don't turn out like we dreamed about in another time.

11: A song that you never get tired of   I'm a big fan of Neil Young's music.  I've yet to tire of hearing "Cinnamon Girl".

12: A song from your preteen years    "The Wayward Wind" by Gogi Grant.

13: One of your favorite 80’s songs   Parachute Club - "Sexual Intelligence" (1985)

14: A song that you would love played at your wedding  "A Rover Reformed/A Fine Companion"  Traditional  English fiddle tunes.  Actually this was played as the processional entrance of the bride and wedding party at my second marriage.  It was played by two of my friends on guitar accompanying me on the fiddle.  The clip is not us playing, but it sounds very much how we sounded.  Yes, I played at my own wedding.

15: A song that is a cover by another artist  Before I understood who Bob Dylan was I started hearing his songs covered by other artists.  I especially liked Johnny Cash's version of "It Ain't Me Babe".   Be sure to see the announcement at the end of this post about The Battle of the Bands!

16: One of your favorite classical songs  "Je Crois Entendre Encore" by Georges Bizet from his opera "The Pearl Fishers".   In the clip I've linked to the song is beautifully performed by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour.  This gives me chills every time I hear it.

17: A song that you would sing a duet with on karaoke   Not sure this would happen again, but actually I did sing "Rocky Top" with my sisters at a party once.  Sometimes strange things happen.  The clip I've included is by the bluegrass group The Osborne Brothers who had a hit with the song back in the 60's.

18: A song from the year that you were born (1951) "Tennessee Waltz"  Patti Page.  I was born in Ohio, but after settling in East Tennessee during my high school years I've always considered that state my home.  I still do even though I currently live in Los Angeles.

19: A song that makes you think about life  "In My Life" by The Beatles.

20: A song that has many meanings to you  "Como Te Extraño Mi Amor"  I guess I'd have to look up the lyrics to recall exactly what they mean, but the song itself represents a period of transition, a span of changing outlook, and a recording I enjoy hearing.

21: A favorite song with a person’s name in the title   "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Still, and Nash.

22: A song that moves you forward  "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel, performed in this clip by the 60's group Gerry and the Pacemakers.

23: A song that you think everybody should listen to  "What About the Bond?"  by Bruce Cockburn should especially be listened to by anyone contemplating marriage or divorce.

24: A song by a band you wish were still together    The New York Rock and Roll Ensemble was an eclectic band that had infinite possibilities.  They combined mostly rock and classical but had the potential for creating so much more.  They were musicians of high caliber.   Here's a clip of them performing "Gravedigger".

25: A song by an artist no longer living   Jim Morrison of the Doors performing Kurt Weill's "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)"

26: A song that makes you want to fall in love  "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green.  Wow!  How cool could a song be?

27: A song that breaks your heart   "Cry Me a River" Julie London (or anyone except Joe Cocker who makes me cry for other reasons).

28: A song by an artist with a voice that you love   Greg X Volz singing Aerosmith's "Dream On"

29: A song that you remember from your childhood  "The Face from Outer Space"  Jeff Barry  --I used to love silly novelty songs.  I still remember seeing this performed on some TV variety show.

30: A song that reminds you of yourself  "On The Road Again"  Willie Nelson.  Yeah, I can relate to this song for sure.

And now it's your turn if you'd like to play along...

Be sure to visit this coming Friday as I participate in the Battle of the Bands.  For more information and additional links see my Battle of the Bands post.
