It's all in the title of this post so I guess you might be able to see where I'm going here. If you know, you know and whatever else. Sit back and enjoy...
Battle of the Bands
Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month. My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months. The premise is simple: Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it. Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.
It's almost like a cliché I guess. It's the first song I thought of when I figured I'd take a blogging break. I do need one I think. Or what I really need is to figure out where I go next with my blog. Let me think on this awhile and you can tell us which version of this song you like best. Thanks for playing along!
The Happenings "See You In September" (1966)

Julie Budd "See You In September" (1972)
This is my last Battle for the summer so please help make it a good one. You're supposed to vote on one of these song versions. Which one do you prefer? Battles are no fun without you the reader participating. Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.
Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.
Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

The Insecure Writer's Support Group
Join us on the first Wednesday of each month in Alex J. Cavanaugh's Insecure Writer's Support Group--a forum of writers who gather to talk about writing and the writer's life. For a complete list of participants visit Alex's Blog.
The co-hosts for the July 2 posting of the IWSG are Rebecca Douglass, Natalie Aguirre, Cathrina Constantine, and Louise Barbour.
Safe travels! And I vote for The Happenings.
ReplyDeleteAlex, thanks!
DeleteVoting starts with The Happenings.

First Debbie, then Stephen, and now you are on hiatus. Good for all of you! That's what I'm suppose to be doing and yet haven't really gotten away from things a whole lot. It's just so easy to get sucked in while clearing things off my computer. I check and double check my blog to see if archived material found its way onto my site and if not, I throw together a future post with my discoveries. I will take step away, actually not being on the computer at some point this fall. I hope you enjoy your time away.
ReplyDeleteMy vote goes for The Happenings!
All of my BOTB are scheduled for the first of each month for the rest of the year. Whenever you get a chance to vote please stop by and if not that's okay, I understand.
Happy travels until I see you in September! :)
Cathy, we've got so much going on in July and August that blogging would be a burden for me. I need to regroup.
DeleteAnother vote for The Happenings.

Ahhh... take the summer off! Sounds nice!
ReplyDeleteI am going to lemming the vote and go with The Happenings. They capture the sound of the era really well. I was 11 at the time, and the lyrics are perfect for some kid wistfully thinking about some girl he likes at school (but was too afraid to talk to) and worrying that she will come back with a "boyfriend" at end of summer.
See you in September.
Sixgun McItchyfinger
6-Gun, maybe we'll pass on the highways somewhere. Where are you these days?
DeleteAgain it's The Happenings.

I am still in New Hampshire, but just moved this week to a new house there. Actually, the move is arduous and ongoing, but we are "living" at the new (old) place.
DeleteSoon we will take off for Denver via St. Louis and Iowa... then back again.
And in early August we then drive to Washington State, marking yet another cross-country jaunt, this time in the RV. That will make about 10 or 11 of them since the covid scamdemic. I like driving or it would be miserable rather than fun.
Where are you headed? Maybe we WILL meet somewhere along the byways.

Safe travels and have a wonderful summer, Lee! I know the feeling about pondering one's direction in the Blogosphere. For this battle, I'm going with Julie Budd's different take on a familiar song. More interesting, IMO!
ReplyDeleteDebbie D, thanks and you have a great summer too!
DeleteThank you for breaking the trend.
A vote for Julie Budd.

Mysteries are tough but I guess all genres are in their own way.
ReplyDeleteI like the first one best.
L.Diane, if I'm not into what I'm doing that it can become a chore. No fun!
DeleteAgain a vote for The Happenings.

Great choice of songs! The Happenings get my vote - and special thanks for the memories ;-) Happy trails, and a wonderful summer to you, my friend!
ReplyDeleteDiedre, summer has been off to a pretty good start so far.

R. LEE BOID ~
ReplyDeleteThe Tempos' version of this song is included on the 'American Graffiti' soundtrack, which I have listened to a godzillion and 63.5 times. So, to me, that's the "official" version of the song. And THE HAPPENINGS sound more like the "official" version than does the Julie Budd rendition.
However, I would still be voting for The Happenings, regardless of there being a (subjective) "official" version. Primarily because I like the harmonizing AND!... there's an undercurrent of sentimentality or melancholia in their version. To the contrary, the Julie Budd recording sounds more like a dance party tune. It's missing any trace of submerged sadness or concern.

STMcC, I considered using that Tempos version, but I just didn't care for it much. I guess I'd heard it before since I've seen that movie a few times, but it never stuck with me.
DeleteA vote for The Happenings.

That was a lot better from TB than I was expecting! The Happenings by the narrowest of margins.
ReplyDeleteCW, that was close!

Enjoy the rest break! Mysteries are tricky in some ways, but the structure of the genre also makes it easier in some ways.
ReplyDeleteVOTE = THE HAPPENINGS
ReplyDeleteIt may just be due to my own personal memory of their version, which at the time I'm pretty sure I thought it was The Four Seasons or The Lettermen or maybe The Vogues. Honestly, a little oddly, the group name The Happenings did not manage to stick to my brain pan. Of course, I was only ten years old at the time... In any case, yes, their version gets my vote. ~Ed.
Just want to put in my vote for THE HAPPENINGS because their version is a celebration -- and that's what we need as summer begins! Also, Arlie, I hope you find a way to explore your own writing, to tell the stories that have meaning for you.
ReplyDeleteI think I need a hiatus, too.
ReplyDeleteAs for the BotB, my favorite harmony of all time is that of the Happenings in this song. I hate to sing, but when this would come on the radio, I would sing along.... The Happenings!
