Looks like I've gotten onto a themed subject matter which is the music of the summer of 1966. My previous Battle got me to thinking about all the great music that came out during the summer when my family first moved to East Tennessee from the Chicago area.
It was the summer before my first year of high school. I made some new friends and many of them were into music--like really into music. I recall many an hour with the transistor radio blaring as we listened to the current hits playing on Knoxville's top forty station at the time, WNOX. So many great songs! Including this next one...
Battle of the Bands
Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month. My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months. The premise is simple: Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it. Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.
Double Shot of My Baby's Love
When this hit by The Swinging Medallions started getting airplay I immediately liked it and apparently a lot of other music fans liked it as well. It's now a classic from 1966 and it's one of the first songs of the era that popped into my head. And does it qualify for a Battle of the Booze? I'll let Mr. McCarthy be the judge. It does sound like a fun drinking song nevertheless. The recording has lots of fun party sounds and rowdiness which was likely something that attracted me as a teen.
As I started exploring I discovered that not only there are many covers of the song available, the hit version that I have always known was actually a cover of an earlier regional hit that didn't go much of anywhere on the charts. I guess this is one of those cases where I can use an original version against a later version and see what the crowd thinks. Hope you enjoy...
Dick Holler & the Holidays "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" (1963)
Swinging Medallions "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" (1966)
It's a double shot of musical fun and games. You're supposed to vote on one of these song versions. Which one do you prefer? Battles are no fun without you the reader participating. Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.
Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.
Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

'Curious as a Cathy'
Sound of One Hand Typing
Those two are really close. I guess I'll go with the second one.
ReplyDeleteAlex, same song with a big obvious difference.
DeleteVoting starts with one for Swinging Medallions.

Great post, Lee! Terrific battle too ;-) This fun song brought back good memories. The Swinging Medallions have a bit more going on, so they get my vote.
ReplyDeletediedre, it's a song I hadn't thought about in a while until now that I've been thinking about the summer of '66.
DeleteAnother vote for Swinging Medallions.

I really like this song and, sadly, I am goingvwith the version I know, which is the Silver Medallions. I really like the keyboard...I think it's a keyboard, in this.
ReplyDeleteBirgit, familiarity often draws us I believe.
DeleteAgain it's Swinging Medallions.
Lee
These are both good, but as is the trend so far, I like the remake better. I love the organ that pops in occasionally, and I also dig the blood-curdling screams that happen once in a while. The Silver Medallions win gold in this battle.
ReplyDeleteSixgun McItchyfinger
Six-Gun, I'm not so much for the screams, but I do like that organ.

Ooh! This was a goot juan, BOIDMAN!
ReplyDeleteI listened to both recordings twice each, to make sure I was gonna git 'er right. I've heard The Medallions version many times, but I believe this was my first with the first. (I feel they should have called themselves Dick Holler & The Hollerdays, but who am I to say?)
I'm a complete sucker for the electric organ, so The Medallions were certainly the odds-on favorite to get my vote, but... (yes, "but")... I like Holler & The Holidays even better. As soon as it started playing, in my mind's eye, I could see John Milner cruising the boulevard in his "piss yellow / puke green" '32 Ford Coupe. That sounded like a song that should have been emanating from his car radio.
Incidentally, I have always loved 'American Graffiti' and owned the 41-song soundtrack on LP, which I later upgraded to compact disc. I would have positioned 'Double Shot Of My Baby's Love' right between 'You're Sixteen, You're Beautiful (And You're Mine)' and 'Love Potion #9'. ;^D
Does this song qualify for "Battle Of The Booze"?
That depends on how strong Baby's love is. If it's at least 80-proof, then a double shot of that should certainly qualify for BOTBooze.

STMcC, the narrator is talking about being able to "bottle that stuff" so I guess it's kind of boozy. And the guy was drinking wine, before he got his double shot of his baby's love.
DeleteHoller likes your vote.
First one for Dick Holler.
Lee
Well, hot-diggity! How in tarnation did that "wine" slip by me?! [Link> "I don't know, I guess maybe it's the booze or something, I don't know."
DeleteOh, yeah, with that miracle water (wine) mentioned in the song, it absolutely qualifies for Battle Of The Booze, even if Baby's love was only 7.5% ABV (the same as Olde English 800).

I haven't heard this song before now. Both are nice. The one that resonates with me this morning is the second cover, so please give my vote Swinging Medallions which I don't remember either. Actually I don't think either of the bands ring any bells but then I was a little girl in the 60s and I have never been really good about keeping up with artists unless it was someone I liked. Have a bandtastic week, Lee!
ReplyDeleteCathy, it was a pretty popular song in East Tennessee in 1966 and all over the place I guess. It was one of those one hit wonder bands I think.
DeleteSwinging Medallions.
Le
Swinging Medallions for me.
ReplyDeleteL.Diane, pretty definitive I'd say!
DeleteSwinging Medalliions.
Lee
Medallions, no question.
ReplyDeleteCW, even more definitive!

The second one sounds a lot livelier, especially with the Farfisa organ playing in the background. Give my vote to The Swi∂ungin' Medallions!
ReplyDeleteJohn, that organ was the real catch to this recording.
DeleteAnother vote for Swinging Medallions.
Lee
I don't know this song, but both versions were fun to listen to. ☺ I preferred the Swinging Medallions version though. It seemed like they were having the most fun!
ReplyDeleteDebbie D, maybe they weren't playing this where you were at the time. It was a moderate hit in the U.S. I guess.
DeleteSwinging Medallions.

VOTE = SWINGING MEDALLIONS
ReplyDeleteTheir party atmosphere and the Hammond B-3 clinched it for me. Fun, either way, though! ~Ed.
Ed, the organ is the main thing for me.
