This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Los Angeles Burning! ( #BOTB )

The news from Los Angeles--the city in which I reside--is that right now as I write this it's a beautiful day with clear blue skies and good visibility of the mountains. From where I sit the world seems fine.

Of course, across city it's a far different story.  Winds are picking up again which might spread the fire to potentially worse proportions.  We have to leave it up to the firefighters--and ultimately God. My household has been safe and will likely remain so as far as fires go. For now there's been a lull of new reporting, but perhaps the all station all hour blitz will go back to being the programming for all.

Seems like the whole world is burning from the TV reporting.  And sadly for some it is.

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Los Angeles Fires!

As I was watching the continual fire reporting on the t-vision news, I was in the midst of thinking about my next Battle of the Bands.  My theme seemed pretty obvious.  One song had immediately jumped into my mind.  Then as I thought on I started coming up with more songs about fire and, more specifically, Los Angeles fires. There is a wealth of songs about this topic.  I narrowed it down to two by a couple of groups that I've liked for a very long time.   The videos are kind of like yule log vids for a post-Christmas apocalypse for the new year.  Have fun!

Spirit    "The Great Canyon Fire in General"  (1968)

As I was watching the fire coverage on TV (and every channel had amazing compelling coverage), the song that first started playing in my mind was this one by the versatile group Spirit. I was a big fan of this group's music in my youth and it still holds up well for me.  Take a listen.  The song not only seems like an accurate account of what we've been seeing, but an interesting optimistic contemplation about time and the future.  At least that's how I read it.  See what you think...

Blue Oyster Cult  "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll"  (1972)

I heard BOC's first album on WUOT, the University of Tennessee station in Knoxville probably late 1971 or early '72.    I don't know why I never had any of their albums in my own vinyl collection, but I was very familiar with their music. I still listen to it and enjoy it as much now as ever.  This song off their first album is not as graphic an account as the Spirit song, but it's a very cool metaphor for something and somehow the song works for the fires currently blazing.  What do you think about this one?

Time to Vote!

You better get your vote in before everything goes up in flames!  Which of these songs do you prefer?  Battles are no fun without you the reader participating.
Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.

  1. You know I have to go with BOC.
Good to hear you are on the opposite end of the fire. So terrible. So many bad decisions by officials in that area.

    1. Alex, I certainly suspected that would be your vote. Los Angeles area is so huge that the fire areas seem across the state where we are.

      Voting starts off with BOC

  2. I vote BOC too. I had kind of forgotten about them but liked their music back in the day. I'm glad you're safe. The fires and damage along with loss of life is heartbreaking.

    1. Joyce, don't hear much of a lot of bands, but I usually only hear what's playing in the background of my life or movies I'm watching.

      Another vote for BOC

  3. I did not care for the Spirit song, but I like "Cities on Flame..." I have heard it often before so, besides being an easier melody for me to get behind, it has familiarity going for it. I am not a fan of the lead vocals on this song, though. I do not think he hits the notes with much precision. These days they would run it though auto-tune... it would improve it, though I usually dislike doing that.

    1. 6-Gun, I thought you might be a Spirit fan because of their superb musicianship and all. I really like the vocals in the BOC song--good rock and roll and for me any dissonance works. I think the song is great as it is.

      BOC.

  4. I'm glad you are away from these horrible fires. It's very sad that some historic homes went up as well, like Will Rogers' home.
Now, as for music, I'm going with Spirit I thought I would vote for Blue Oyster but I really enjoyed the first one.

    1. Birgit, another historic home lost was the Rand McNally house in Pasadena. It looked beautiful in the photo I saw.

      A needed vote for Spirit.

  5. R. LEE BOID ~

I'm sure glad to know that you and your family have not been affected by these strange fires all over the place. Such an awful tragedy. Thankfully, none of my friends & family in the helL.A. area have needed to evacuate their homes.

I was a big BOC fan while a teenager, and saw them perform two or three times. I particularly loved their albums 'SPECTRES' and 'MIRRORS'. And 'AGENTS OF FORTUNE', which gave us the hit song that needed more cowbell, was pert-good, too. I didn't care as much for their earlier heavier Metal stuff.

I moved away from BOC when I got into Blues & Jazz, and when I discovered some lyrics in a couple of their songs that I felt were deplorable. (And I mean "deplorable" in a bad way.) However, I definitely preferred 'Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll' to the Spirit song.

    1. STMcC, I remember you writing about BOC in the past. And I probably said something like I never really much listened to their lyrics which is mostly true. I still enjoy their music when I hear it these days which is rare.

      Another vote for BOC.

  6. VOTE = BLUE OYSTER CULT

I just dug the riffs and the drumming better. The basic psychedelia of Spirit was really good; kind of reminded me of The Doors. Nevertheless, the Cult. ~Ed.

  7. I'm glad you're safe from the fires, Lee! And you found the perfect songs for your battle. I was hearing them for the first time and liked them both, but Spirit's psychedelic vibe appealed a bit more.

    1. Debbie D, I'm somewhat surprised that you hadn't heard these songs before. I think they are both pretty great songs.

  10. I'll go with Spirit. I've always liked them, too.

Now that I've completed the regularly scheduled comment... Why are you still there? I don't know if what I'm seeing is incompetence or criminal negligence, but where do you find the people that end up screwing things up so badly that half of Southern California is now on fire? I don't think it's funny. I think it's sad, and if I lived there, I'd be marching on City Hall with a pitchfork...

  11. John, the part of town where I am seems rather sane compared to the parts under Los Angeles city jurisdiction. And the weather is nice. Besides, my wife doesn't want to move so there is that.

    A vote for Spirit.

  12. I'm glad to know that you're well, as is your home and property. Those wild fires are scary business. Both songs are new to me. I'm giving my vote to Spirit. Something about their style and song I liked better. I think perhaps it was a bit more soothing to my ear and soul given the song title with the accompanying videography. Stay safe, my friend!
