I feel like I have so many projects that I'd like to tackle that it gets difficult to focus on just one at a time. Guess that's why I seem to get so little done. And then there's all the daily chores that take up a lot of my time. By the way, dinner will be around 4:30 PM. Tonight, we're having pinto beans with Cajun sausage...
Battle of the Bands Results
Night and Day
My most recent Battle saw the venerable Rod Stewart go up against the oft-despised Bono and his group U2. Stewart played it safe with his traditional take on the Cole Porter standard. I can't help but like the backing band and the arrangement of Stewart's version and I'm even okay with his gravelly vocals. That's the Rod Stewart I "grew up" with.
On the other hand, Bono takes a rather daring approach that appeals to me. I can hear the pretentiousness that some of you hear, but I just think that's part of the U2 style. I still remember. watching the TV concert at Red Rocks special they did in the eighties and I've liked them ever since. That's who I'm voting for.
I figured this would be a tight Battle since I know so many of my readers have a distaste for U2 and would go for the more traditional sound of Rod Stewart. Me? I like them both, but in this case I just like that U2 sound better.
Final Vote Tally
Rod Stewart 5 votes
U2 10 votes
Well, what about that? I expected a closer race and wasn't sure about the outcome.
I plan to be back for an October 15th Battle and who knows what else. See you when...
Why so many that dislike U2? I think they're okay.
ReplyDeleteCount me in as one who doesn't like U2. 😆 I was surprised by this result, but, so it goes...
ReplyDeleteI think this vote count total is about right for the two bands. If U2 had done even a slightly more traditional version they'd have garnered more votes and maybe even won.
ReplyDeleteWhen Joshua Tree came out I was very fond of that record. Song after song was excellent. But as time passed (and it wasn't long) it seemed more and more that U2 members were SO full of themselves that it put me off, and I became snarky and critical of them, rating them incredibly overrated. The Edge is a so-so guitarist, IMO. South Park got it right!
But I always really liked Rod Stewart and even tolerated him in his silly later period. His gravely voice is not fake... it is just the way he sounds. And his early stuff with The Faces? Fantastic! I loved that raw, energetic sound. There are a couple of YT videos of them live, and I could just watch them over and over. Anyway, looking forward to your BotB on the 15th.

As McCarthy said: "The results are what they are." I, apparently, thought the results were what they were NOT. For some reason I thought that U2 lost to Stewart 5 votes to 10, but our mutual friend contacted me today and suggested that I must have finally listened to him and taken up drinking, since I got the results mixed up and backwards.
DeleteOh well, first mistake this year! Ha ha.
Using the logic in my previous comment, had Stewart done a weirder and even less traditional version of Night and Day, perhaps he would have beaten U2's weird version.
There, I fixed it!

DeleteKudos! And some Cap'n Crunch, too!
You redeemed yerself here... somewhot & somewatt.
Truth be told, U2 is the 2nd most overrated musical artist in the entire history of "this world" (which is why you find the number "2" in their silly name).
I can give proof of my accusation, right here:
Listen to any original U2 song and see if this isn't true...
what U2 calls a "bridge" or "break" is nothing more than a short period in which Bonehead Bono stops singing and the band continues to play the same boring crap at the same boring tempo that they've been playing all along. You know when the "musical interlude" has concluded ONLY because Bonehead Bono starts singing again.
If there were even the slightest bit of Truth & Justice in "this world" (see The Holy Bible for the definition of "this world"), then a picture of the band U2 would would be included in every single dictionary corresponding with the word "BORING".
As is often said in the old black & white movies:
"Well... I've said too much."

This is Birgit…. I’m Surprised and I like U2 but not their rendition of this song.
ReplyDeleteI was never a big fan of Rod Stewart, but I certainly liked him mo' better than U2. I was never able to understand the popularity of that band, and Sir Six calling The Edge a "so-so" guitarist is probably being a bit generous.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, the results are what they are.

I'm sorry I missed your battle. We were on vacation. I like U2 but I preferred the Rod's throw back rendition. In my opinion that's the way the song should be presented.
