This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2025 the theme is a random assemblage of things that are on my mind--or that just pop into my mind. Whatever! Let's just say I'll be "Tossing It Out" for your entertainment or however it is you perceive these things.

Holding Back the Years (What, Again?) ( #BOTB )

And just like that 2025 was over!  It was a pretty good year for me and my house.  We're still going,,  maybe not as strong as in past years, but pretty darn good I'd say.  And here on this blog the music is still not over.  Listen!  It's more music I hear...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and  StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   I do this event  each month on the 15th and the 1st of the month.  The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Holding Back the Years

Well, it looks like Déjà vu all over again. I've used this song a couple of other New Years Day Battles, but to me it's a good song and right for the occasion.  After all, this is often a time when many of us reflect on the past as well as a hopefully better future. I hope your past year was at least as good as my own and I hope the year to come is better for all of us.

So on with this Battle with two versions, both live performances.  Take a listen if you will and tell us which one you prefer...

Daniel Mason Band  "Holding Back the Years"  (2018)

Angie Stone  "Holding Back the Years"  (2000)

Time to Vote!

Don't hold on too long!    Vote now please.   Which song interpretation do you prefer?  Battles are no fun without you the reader participating.
Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind.  You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.

Happy New Year to all of you!

  3. Yes, this is a good song. I still have the Simply Red album this is on. I liked a lot of "white soul" kind of stuff.

Both versions are good... but frankly, I am tired of the vibe of the second artist, so I am voting for the Dan Mason dude. Good voice.

    1. 6-Gun, I really like this song more so than when it first came out. Same with Simply Red. And, yeah, I like both of these versions a lot.

      Another vote for Daniel Mason.

  4. Happy New Year, Lee! Daniel Mason is more like the original. The second artist I didn't care for all the runs. I don't think that style ever appeals to me. Daniel Mason Band is the better contender and get my vote.

Here's hoping 2026 is a good one for you and yours, dear friend!

  7. R. LEE BOIDMAN ~

I gotta admit, when I saw which song you'd selected, my first thought was: Oh, crap! Here we go again with this fruity New Wave-y garbage from the disastrous mid- to late-'80s. Is Lee doing this deliberately just to irritate me?! (Not that I think everything revolves around me but... doesn't it? ;^D

And then... I listened to the first recording and realized how good it is. I really dig everything about it. The tempo, the vocal, the cool instrumental approach and that fuzzed-out guitar solo. Really good and, in my opinion, much better than the original hit.

Wow! Really liked the second version, too! Lotsa soul, funky drumming (like something from a Marvin Gaye recording), and of course I always love an electric organ in any song. This one is also better'n the original hit.

This Battle was a really goot juan! And I hates to have to vote against one of the recordings. But I guess that's what I'm doing in casting my BOTB "bote" for The DANIEL MASON BAND.

I listened to both songs twice each, just for the enjoyment.

    Happy New Year, Mr. Boid!

    1. STMcC, I'm never out to get you with my music, but I use the songs that have inspired me for that particular post and usually music that I like a lot and I like a lot of different music.

This is turning into a very lopsided outcome and I don't think many more voters will be joining us.

      A vote for Daniel Mason.
