Battle of the Bands
Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. I do this event each month on the 15th and the 1st of the month. The premise is simple: Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it. Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.
Other lives/lifetimes
Zoot "Eleanor Rigby" (1970)
The Herd "From the Underworld" (1967)
Time to Vote!
Before you too become too famous to vote on these Battles, take a moment. Vote now please. Which song interpretation do you prefer? Battles are no fun without you the reader participating. Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.
Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.
Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

Now we know how long it took Frampton to grow out his hair. And Zoot became LRB? I had no idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm going with Zoot as they made that song their own.
Alex, thanks for starting off the voting.
DeleteFirst vote goes to Zoot.

Im going with The Herd and Pete Frampton's hair. I like the use of the bells and the different instruments. It sounded more unique to me.
ReplyDeleteBirgit, The bells are kind of cool.
DeleteA vote for The Herd.

Zoot was new to me, but I knew all about The Herd! I was living in Europe at the time and bought their debut album. My vote goes to The Herd and thank you for that great memory. ♥
ReplyDeleteDebbie D, The Herd was all the rage for a while I guess. I found their album in a cut-out bin around 1970.
DeleteAnother vote for The Herd.

BOIDMAN ~
ReplyDeleteThis one was easy for me.
I didn't like Zoot at all. They sounded like a combination of two different bands that I dislike. Rush, I think, and... uhm... Uriah Heep maybe(?) Something along those lines.
So, The Herd would have won simply by default, but I did think 'From The Underworld' was pretty good, too.

DeleteScratch Uriah Heep. I think it sounds more like a mash-up of Rush & Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne.

STMcC, Uriah Heep was one of our favorite bands back in the seventies. I went to see them in concert at some point.

Hi Lee -
ReplyDeleteI think this was a very creative and interesting battle.
In the intro to this contest you teased the words “for what its worth” a couple of times, so I was sure you were going to hit us with Buffalo Springfield members in their bands before getting together for fame and superstardom (for a couple ot them, anyway. Stardom for the others. My favorite of those guys was Jimmy Messina, who only reached “stardom.”)
I really liked Zoot. I am not sure about Eleanor Rigby being the choice of a song to cover, but I found it enjoyable and took note of a couple of things. One, the lead singer is dressed like Roger Daltry. Two, at about the 2:39 mark, Springfield does a Townsend-like windmill. I liked the drum flurry at the end of the song.
I like the song by The Herd also, but not as much. I like the instrumentation but the thing meanders around a bit too much without resolution.
Enjoyed them both a lot, actually. I vote for more of this theme for future battles! And I vote for Zoot this time around. Do you feel like I do?

6-Gun, thank you! Glad you enjoyed this one. It's been sitting in my queue for quite a while and I just decided to do it this time around. I agree that Zoot had a very Who look to them and especially the comparison to Daltrey. I saw that too.

Mary and I saw Rick Springfield in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Chicago circa 1982. Still, I'm voting for The Herd.
ReplyDeleteJohn, I remember when Springfield was on General Hospital and that was kind of a big deal at the time.
DeleteAnother vote for The Herd.

Zoot for my vote.
ReplyDeleteJ, thanks for the vote!
