May all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Eat well and rest often--a recipe for a decent life.
Battle of the Bobs
Let's just get to the point of the post: Who won the Battle of the Bobs?
It's not a big surprise to me who won this match, though I do think it could have gone the other way. I thought Bob Dylan did a credible and maybe even more convincing job of presenting the song. He gave a wistful reflection that I could believe he had experienced. But even though I liked Dylan's version a lot, like the rest of you I gave my vote to Bob Darin. The orchestration was a big plus for me. It put me in mind of records my mother used to listen to like Percy Faith with his lush strings.
Both versions carried me back to sweet memories and younger days. But the song does that with its lyrics and dreamy melody. This song has really touched me over the past week. Once upon a time...don't we all think about that now and again?
Final Vote Tally
Bob Darin 19 votes
Bob Dylan 5 votes
Next Battle of the Bands on Saturday December 1
My December Battles won't be Christmas songs, but I use some themes that are related to Christmas things. Again, have a fantastic Thanksgiving.
This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme
My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Bob Dylan is an acquired taste though. You either love or hate his voice.
ReplyDeleteL.Diane, his voice can be assessed as bad, but he can deliver well.

I'm not surprised by the result. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Lee!
ReplyDeleteDebbie D, I wasn't surprised either. Thanks for the good wishes.

I somehow missed this one. I'll get the next one.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
Harry, see you then then. Have a great festive season.

Bobby Darin died too young. He was a real voice for that era.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy time with your family.
Susan K, Darin really did die young. I read his Wiki entry--I didn't realize that he had so many health problems.

Late to the party, but the results were pretty one sided.
ReplyDeleteMike, definitely one sided results.

Sorry I missed the battle, but I went back and cried my eyes out to Bobby Darin. He really was talented and Kevin Spacey does a fantastic impression of him. It’s sad that Darin died so young and Spacey’s career took a dive for such a senseless act. Great battle, Lee! Happy Thanksgiving!

Julie, people come and go and it is often sad the way things turn out.
DeleteAll the best to you!

LEE, this one ended the way I expected it would. I liked both versions, but Darin would probably ALWAYS beat Dylan unless the song being used is a Dylan original.

STMcC, I figured a lot of voters wouldn't get far past Dylan's vocal quality. But there is still a winning quality to Dylan's version from my perspective.

John, thanks and same to you.

It is rare that I come out on the winning side. For this I am thankful. Out timing is perfect.
ReplyDeleteMichael, I've always thought all of my song picks are winners so voters are really all on the winning side.

Dylan is....OK. A few songs are great that HE sings. But as I've always said, the Grateful Dead do Dylan better than Dylan does Dylan. I'd much rather here 'Memphis Blues' as sung by Bob Weir instead of Bob Dylan.
ReplyDeleteJoJo, I like Dylan just about all the time, but sometimes it's a matter of my mood. Same with The Dead and any other artists.

Lee,
ReplyDeleteI sided with the winner this round. Yay, me!! I'll see on the 1st.
Cathy, I should be there, God willing.
