This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Band Theme Songs: Hey, Hey It's Us! (#BOTB)

What's Your Theme Song?

You might have seen this question on other blogs or elsewhere and perhaps you've come up with an answer already.  But why not ask it again?   If everyone had to have their own theme song, what would your theme song be?

Perhaps you'd pick an already existing song that you felt described you well or maybe a song that had some special meaning for you.  If you had a talent for writing songs you might write your own with lyrics specifically dealing with yourself.   You might be so fortunate to know someone who could write a song for you or if you could afford it, you could commission a songwriter to compose your personal theme.  There are a number of options here.

Would you want a song with lyrics?  Or how about a melody that would serve as your theme song?   Like Prokofiev did for his musical composition Peter and the Wolf you could use specific instruments that fit your profile--a haunting oboe, a harmonica, or even a human whistle perhaps.  Lyrics could actually paint a word picture of who you are while a melody might set a mood or evoke an aspect of your personality.

I think I'd like to write my own theme song. Otherwise I'd have to think long and hard about my own theme song based on an existing recording.

What might you choose for your own theme song?

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some blogs there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle on the 1st of the month.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Band Theme Songs

There have probably been many band theme songs before The Monkees hit the scene, but I'm still not coming up with many.  The theme from The Monkees television show is the most exemplary of the kind of song I'm thinking of.  If you don't remember this theme then you can find it here, but please don't vote on it for my Battle today as I'm sure it would likely win since it is so iconic.

The premise of this Battle is three band themes--songs that introduce the group and tell a little something about that group.  The themes are all short which is why I'm going with three choices.  Take a listen and vote on your song preference.  Hope you have fun with this...

The Archies  "Everything's Archie" (1968)

For a group that was not exactly "real" The Archies managed to put out a few albums that actually had songs that hit the charts.  "Sugar Sugar" was their biggest charting hit, but they cranked out a number of other songs that received a fair amount of radio play. The theme song is not much on the lyrical content, but it's a silly opening theme so what else does anyone need.  There's a big Beach Boy influence in this that I detect.  What do you think?   Take a listen and tell us...

Josie and the Pussycats "Josie and the Pussycats"  (1970)

The Pussycats' theme does a good job of laying out who the characters of this Archies spin-off from the early seventies are and what the show is about.  The band was originally a prefabbed group like the Monkees with a lot of help from studio musicians.   Over the years Josie and crew has reappeared in various incarnations on television as well as a feature film in 2001.   Take a listen to their theme to see how it grabs you...

The Good Rats  "We Are the Good Rats" (1968)

The Good Rats were a real band and not a television fabrication though it might have been interesting to do a show based on these guys.   I first came upon this group in 1970 when I was in college and became enthralled with their sound--this is one of my favorite rock bands of all time.  The Rats never quite made it to gain wide exposure despite fifteen albums and a hard rocking tour schedule of mostly bars in New York and New Jersey.  They maintain a hard core fan base to this day, continuing under the leadership of Stefan Marchello, the son of the late band founder Peppi Marchello.   For your consideration, here is the Good Rats theme song from their first album...

Time to Vote!

Hope you'll find a preference of what you like best among these three choices.
Which song version do you like best?   You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorites by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

  1. Used to watch Jose and the Pussycats, so familiar with that theme. Might have to give it to the Good Rats though. Song rather rocks despite it being from the sixties.

    1. Alex, the sixties produced some of the greatest rock so far--revolutionary.

First vote goes to Good Rats.

  2. Lee,

Had you used The Monkees' theme song then I would've voted for it. :) I remember watching The Archies but their song doesn't do a lot for me. Josie and the Pussycats I didn't watch very much. I don't know why. Maybe they competed against The Archies for the same time slot but I like their theme song better. Your third band/theme song I have not heard of and this certainly appeals to me as a grown up but oh the fond sense I get thinking about Saturday morning TV with your first two bands! So for this reason only, I'm going to with Josie and the Pussycats!

    1. Cathy, I never watched either TV show as I was often asleep when they came on--you know, after staying up late on Friday nights. I doubt whether they competed for a time slot ever since they first appeared on CBS.

And it's a vote for Josie and the Pussycats.

  3. I used to love the Archies and Josie and the Pussycats. Hard for me to pick between the two but I'm voting for Josie cause I actually remember the song better than the Archies' one.

My theme song....hmm....Bittersweet Symphony and Life is a Highway would be right up there for sure. Probably cause both are in my top 10 fave songs of all time.

    1. JoJo, "Life Is a Highway" sounds like one for me too, but "Bittersweet Symphony" does seem kind of theme-song-like.

Again it's Josie and the Pussycats.

  5. I liked your clever concept, LEE. Too bad there weren't better representatives to choose from. What we need are more TV band theme songs like 'The Monkees'.

I do remember THE ARCHIES being on TV, but I really didn't pay much attention to that cartoon. In fact, I also remember the comic books the show sprang from, but they didn't do much for me, either. (I dug the song 'Sugar, Sugar', though!)

JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS I'm aware of, but they were a bit after my time. And I'm sure I wouldn't have liked them any more than I did Archie, Jughead, et al.

Were the SCOOBY-DO gang a band too, or just stupid, teenage detectives?

I've heard of THE GOOD RATS -- I've probably even heard a song or two of theirs -- but they didn't carve out a place for themselves in my brain.

In this Battle, however, THE GOOD RATS easily get my vote. First of all, it sounds like a "real" song -- not just some cartoon introduction. Man, there are a lot of influences to be heard in that Good Rats song. It almost sounds like a pastiche of 1960s songs, including The Beatles, The Lovin' Spoonful, and too many others to zero in on this early in the morning.

As for my personal theme song, it's not the least bit in question. You can find it [Link> HERE.

    1. STMcC, I don't know if we need more band TV shows unless someone got really creative with the idea. I think the "Scooby Doo" gang did have a band sometimes, but I never watched the show much to remember. I do remember their theme song though I try not to think about it so it doesn't get stuck in my head.

You've probably heard of The Good Rats on my blog since I've mentioned them a few times and featured one of their songs over a year ago. They were a very eclectic group and may have not only been influenced by other bands, but they probably exerted their own influence on bands that came after them.

I'm not surprised that you'd have a Waylon song as a theme song pick.

      Another vote for Good Rats.

  6. I think the most catchy for me is Archie's.

My theme song would definitely have lyrics, as lyrics are one of the things that moves me with music. I'd like to think that I could embrace Mary Lambert's Secrets as a theme song (though not all parts of it apply), though Matchbox Twenty's Unwell tends to reflect me most often.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Loni, lyrics tell more than having ideas presented by a melody. There are often times when "Unwell" could fit my mood, but I guess we are all unwell a bit.

      A vote for Archies.

  7. I always thought the "Archie" theme was a bit insipid, so that's out. The Good Rats' theme song was okay, but when put up against "Josie and The Pussycats," it falls flat. "Josie and The Pussycats" is my choice.

    1. John, maybe you would have liked the movie version of the Pussycats' theme even better--it really rocks.

  8. I think the Monkees would have been a shutout if you had chosen them as a contender.

I'm going to vote for The Good Rats. While I'm not familiar with the show or the song, it is what appealed to me the most.

As for my own theme song - when I was younger it was Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady'... and now that I'm older - Elton John's 'The Bitch is Back'

Before I vote and answer, I want to say thank you for the enjoyable visit earlier this week when I was in your city. It was great to get to know you better and put a face to the writing! And stumbling upon that excellent delicatessen when McCarthy's restaurant was closed was a fine bit 'o luck. Let's get together again next time I'm in town... or you are.

As for the battle: The Archies aren't getting much love here. That's probably for the best, I guess. Josie is getting more votes than I'd have expected.

The RATS get my vote this time. They are a real band and they sound like one. Not my favorite of all time, but not bad.

The concept of my own theme song is an interesting one. Since I know you haven't had time to write your own theme song, have you thought long and hard (or maybe even short and lazily) about one that might fit you? Maybe just part of you? You should come up with one and then tell us in your vote recap in a few days.

For me it is a hard question. My self-image is complex; I might name a different song at different times. It might be something raw and hard by The Who like "The Real Me." At another time it might be classical, heroic, and complex like Beethoven's "Egmont" overture.

But after much reflection I am choosing a great song by one of my favorite bands, Weezer. I saw them a couple of years ago and they are doing another tour later this year. THIS is my theme song:

    1. 6Gun, I also had a great time during your visit. Thanks for contacting me to let me know that you'd be in town. Hope we can get together again and maybe next time with McCarthy.

I like the idea of multiple theme songs--I guess any life is better with a soundtrack that can reflect the many facets of who we are.

I was not familiar with your Weezer pick--I know some of their work, but this song is a new one to me.

      A vote for Good Rats.

  14. Hi Lee,
This was a fun and clever BOTB concept! I never heard of the Good Rats and their theme song was cool "We're the good rats: hello, hello, hello, hello" LOL!

I've always been an Archies gal. So I'm going to vote for their theme song. And I LOVE Sugar, Sugar!
I also like the Josie and the Pussycats so it was a tough toss-up for me but I'm going with the Archies as they're not showing up so well here, it seems.

  16. I'll go for Josie and the Pussycats, simply because I heard a very cool cover of it on a compilation of reworked Saturday morning cartoon themes.

As for a personal theme, I have none, although for my writing, it seems that I have a twin personal theme: "Drops Of Jupiter" by Train and "The Boys of Summer" by The Hooters.
