This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Who Got the Love? (#BOTB Results)

Some days you just gotta get to where you're going next.  Right now that's me.  At least that seems like a good enough excuse for being lazy right now...

Battle of the Bands Results!

I'm going to get to the point:  Who won my last Battle?   As a reminder it was Paul Weller versus Paul Carrack on the Bobby Blue Bland song "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City".  I kind of figured that this would be a tough race because this was one of those where I liked both performances a great deal.  Carrack's version was by far the most complex, diverse, and flashy presentation and this is a good one to see performed live.  However, my musical taste leans more in that tough choppy sound of Paul Weller. His version suggested the grittiness and edge of the mean side of the city.

For me it was a vote for Paul Weller which edged him a bit closer to the winner Paul Carrack.  Great race!

 Final Vote Tally

Paul Weller                11 votes

Paul Carrack              13 votes

Next Battle on Friday February 1st

Not sure where I'll go with this next one yet.  I've got a log jam of good--or at least interesting--Battles so I'm going to have to settle for one or come up with something completely different.  Don't forget to keep watching the A to Z Blog!

  2. I'm too late to vote, but I did go back and listen. I liked Paul Carrack and his polished sound a bit more, but if I hadn't heard it, I would have been quite happy to listen to Paul Weller's version. I've never heard the song and I quite liked it.

    1. Liza, I'd never heard of the song, but I've heard about Bobby Blue Bland since I was in college in the early 70's.

  3. Hi Lee -

We have family in town and a brand new grandchild (my first) and so I have been so immersed in all this stuff that I MISSED voting this time. I swooped in today to vote and found that I'd waited too long!

I'm sorry! That's one of only a couple of misses since the beginning!

But - just for the fun of the battle - I listened anyway and found that I'd have voted in agreement with the majority on this one, although they both were good.

I'll be there for the next round! (and for the record: there AIN'T no love in the heart of the city! Gotta move to Wyoming or Tennessee for that.)

    1. 6-Gun, Congratulations! Grandchildren are such a joy. And you can play with them and give them back to their parents if they get to be too much.

I'm still dreaming of a move to southwestern VA.

  7. Close, but I was all about Carrack this go-round! Thanks, Lee!

    1. Cherdo, I figured the brassy jazziness would lure some to Carrack's side.

  8. Even though the battle was over, I went back and listened. I loved the Carrack version. I liked the big, bluesier sound. Is that even a word? LOL

    1. Blue, I think bluesier is indeed a word--and it passed my spell check.

    1. Mary, I'm not surprised that it was close. Either choice was a good one.

  10. A really great Battle, LEE, as the outcome testifies!

I'm a little surprised. Although I voted for Carrack, following the comments via Email, it felt like Weller had a substantial lead for a good while. It seems Carrack staged a pretty impressive comeback toward the end.

    1. STMcC, I also thought Weller was running away with the contest, but then looking back I see he was ahead briefly and only by a few. This was a fun contest that kept me on the edge of my seat.

    1. Debbie D, Weller looked like he was going to win, but he came out well even if not the wellest.

  12. Great choices there, Lee. I was tempted both ways and generally would favour Carrack but voted for Weller. Not surprised it was close at the tape.

  13. Lee,

I sided with the winner this round. Yay, me! This one was a close showdown with only a two point margin. My battle was close but not this close. I haven't decided what I'll do about the A to Z Challenge this time. I'm kinda on the fence but I'll keep an eye on the A2Z home blog for upcoming details. Thanks for sharing the results of another pAwesome battle!

    2. Lee,

I probably will, I just need to get motivated the right direction. Yesterday, I began mulling over a few possibilities of which way to go this year. I'm fairly certain I'll keep with my artsketch theme but I might try to be more organized with my approach. We'll see. :)

  14. Yay! I was hoping for that result! I might be doing the challenge again this year. Might actually have time for it! If I do, the theme probably will be on our new home, the city of Columbus, or, it might be my long trip to France last year... yeah, that.
