We often had doughnuts in our household when I was growing up. My dad loved his sweets and he had a special fondness for doughnuts and coffee so hot it could scald one's palate. Glazed doughnuts were his favorites, but he never met a doughnut he didn't like.
I too enjoy a good doughnut now and then. That's what I'm going to have for breakfast and dessert today (Friday June 3rd). After all, here in the United States, today is National Doughnut Day. The first Friday of June has been designated National Doughnut Day since it was started in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.
Though doughnuts, or fried dough, have been around in one form or another in nearly every culture for centuries, they really came into popularity in the United States due to their distribution to the soldiers in France during World War 1. When the Doughnut Day promotion was started, it caught on with the veterans who were nostalgic for the treat that brought them joy on the front lines of battle when they were delivered by the "Doughnut Lassies" of the Salvation Army.
The doughnuts became a hit and soon doughnut shops were popping up across the country. Now it's hard to go anywhere in the United States and not find a doughnut shop somewhere nearby. The tasty treats are beloved by just about everyone.
So love a doughnut today. Forget your diets--it's time to celebrate!
Happy National Doughnut Day!
OOOOOOOOOOOO
I like to lick the frosting off of doughnuts, and then throw out the rest....
ReplyDeleteIs that weird?
Hi Lee .. Happy Donut day or Doughnut .. they look good and as you say once in a while is a real treat.
ReplyDeleteWe're celebrating a blog-fest day for Lenny Lee .. yeah I know .. so a sunshine donut day for Lenny around the blogosphere ..
I've eaten too many .. as you'll see over at my blog .. I'm as big as a ....?!
Cheers and have a lovely weekend .. remembering donuts eaten .. Hilary
Now, I just wanna run to the nearest Krispy Kreme store to get myself an original glazed doughnut...
ReplyDeleteBut ugh, it's raining outside! ):
O.M.G. All I want is a doughnut now. I haven't had one in what's got to be... Well, probably a year or more. My mouth is watering. Love them, just don't wind up going anywhere that actually has them normally. I think I shall be dreaming of those sugary delights all day today.
ReplyDeleteHere in Ontario there is a Tim Hortons on every corner (or at least it seems that way). When you drive past there is always a line up of people who are starting to look like a donut themselves.
ReplyDeleteDoughnut Day or not I am not eating any as I don't want to pile anymore pounds on this frame of mine.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments seems strange blogging from your side of the Big Pond.
Take care.
Yvonne.
Going out to get me a dozen right now! (drool...)
ReplyDeleteIf this isn't reason enough to go and try the new bakery I heard about...then I don't know what is!
ReplyDeleteI hear some rumor that Dunkin Donuts will give free ones today; sadly there are none near where i am living now ;-(
I am new to following this blog and and swamped with all the ideas percolating here! I am seriously considering the A to Z challenge...is there one every month or does one just dive in when the spirit strikes/
whale
a very sweet post, I must say :)
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, we don't have doughnut shops in my country, so we must make them ourselves, and it's not an easy job as far as I remember. I haven't eaten one probably in about ten years or so.
These glazed ones seem positively sinful.
I knew there was a reason my sweet tooth was acting up. I love the stuffed ones. Off to the doughnut shop :)
ReplyDeleteJules @ Trying To Get Over The Rainbow
Thanks for this delicious post! I get a craving for donuts sometimes--usually it hits at a country-style autumn fair. Donuts and apple cider, yummmmmm.
ReplyDeleteThere's a national doughnut day? How interesting. Learn something new everyday.
ReplyDeleteChocolate covered doughnut, here I come!
ReplyDeleteFortunately, we can now secure Dunkin Donuts in our town, because Krispy Kreme just won't do.
ReplyDeleteOh, man--wish I hadn't already had breakfast! I LOVE doughnuts (and they are the worst FOR you)--Old Fashioneds are my favorite.
ReplyDeleteMy step-dad is a retired electrician and had his daily coffee break at the doughnut shop. My daughter, when she was little, totally thought that was 'papas work' (sitting at the doughnut shop having coffee and a doughnut)
Sooooo hungry now after looking at that pic!
ReplyDeleteHappy Good-Excuse-to-eat-a-Doughnut Day!
Yum! I grew up in a relatively healthy eating household, so donuts were a veeerrry special treat when we got them! Every now and then my parents would take me and my siblings to a delightful family-owned bakery across from the grocery store and we'd each get a donut. Regular glazed and chocolate glazed were my favorite!
ReplyDeleteHubby LOVES donuts. I like them OK.
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!
I'll take 1 of each! I LOVE DOUGHNUTS! But only every other month or so. I especially love the raspberry filled ones. But a nice chocolate frosted doughnut is fine, too! Thanks for the picture & the mention of it being National Doughnut Day! Krispy Kreme, here I come! :)
ReplyDeleteAndrew -- That is kind of weird. I used to do that when I was a kid and just wanted the pure sugar. Now I go for the whole darn thing.
ReplyDeleteHilary -- Here's to donuts for all!
Lost -- Get 'em while they're still hot! Just the thing for a rainy day.
Kimberly -- It's been a little while since I'd had a donut myself, but I just couldn't pass up not celebrating Donut Day.
MyBabyJohn -- When I'm in Ontario (which is rarely these days) I always head to Tim Horton's as many times as I can. I usually go for the coffee and muffins.
Yvonne -- Hope you are having wonderful travels!
Marvin -- Are you going to eat the whole dozen by yourself?
Whalechaser - Welcome to my site. The official Challenge is just once a year, but you can certainly do it whenever you like.
Dezmond -- With your baking skills maybe you could open a worthy donut shop in Serbia.
Jules -- Oh yes! Cream filled, custard filled, raspberry jelly, and all of the other stuffed donuts---I forgot those!
Lee
Jess -- Yes, there's something down-home about donuts.
ReplyDeleteRhonda -- I just learned about Donut Day a couple days ago. Of course, any day can be Donut Day.
Alex -- I had a chocolate covered chocolate cake donut covered in nuts for breakfast this morning.
L.Diane -- They're both okay in my book. I don't have either real close by, but I have plenty of other shops to choose from.
Hart -- I recall going to the donut shop with my grandfather while he talked to his buddies. He was a politician and he liked to go where there were people gathered.
K.C. -- I never need too much of an excuse.
Laura -- Chocolate glazed sounds excellent!
Carol -- I think most men like donuts moreso than women.
Lisa from Nadir -- We used to have a Krispy Kreme shop across from where I live but it closed after a couple years. Now the closest one is about 10 miles away or so. It was such a big deal when they started opening shops here in California.
Lee
How dare you put up a picture like that. Do you know how bad I want a doughnut right now??
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of 'National Doughnut Day'...only in America! lol...although here in Canada they seem to be pretty popular too, judging by the crowds at Tim Horton's and the general ill health of our nation..personally I avoid Tim Horton's and all fast food...but once in a blue moon I'll get a doughnut from the bakery..
ReplyDeleteHey, RLee, You make me want hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts, right out of the oven, like I used to get in Knoxville on Magnolia Avenue at their bakery. Oh, my goodness! They have a KK bakery here in Colleyville, but I am resisting...you make it difficult. :)
ReplyDeleteRuby
OK, just for you, I will have a doughnut, glazed, stuffed with real whipped cream and washed down with coffee laced with Bailey's. (You do realize that you will gain 10 pounds simply by reading these comments, don't you?) Have you ever tried juggling doughnuts?
ReplyDeletewow, theres a national doughnut day. I didn't even know this, I shall celebrate by having something doughnut like due to the lack of doughnuts in my household.
ReplyDeleteHI!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great day... I can think of nothing better than the HOT Now sign at Krispy Kreme... the best. LOL I have eaten my share til they made me sick...
Have a wonderful weekend.
Take care,
First - I am new follower...followed the white rabbit and saying hi!
ReplyDeleteSecond -doughnuts complete me. I could have one every single day. I went to Dunkin Donuts yesterday to get a box of glazed munchkins and they were out! Needless to say, I was crestfallen.
Third - Can't wait for next April to paricipate in the A to Z Challenge!
Oh my..I never knew there's a doughnut day..haha..!
ReplyDeleteWould be nice to have a doughnut in one hand..coffee in the other..then sit & chat with love ones..
It seems like there must be a holiday for everything! I've never heard of National Doughnut Day before.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
I do love doughnuts.
ReplyDeleteOne of our local grocery stores is actually donating 10% of their Friday doghnut sales this month to the Salvation Army.
Wendy -- Go ahead--have a donut. It's Donut Day!
ReplyDeleteEve -- But Tim Horton's is a Canadian national treasure! How can you avoid it?
Grammy -- Ah yes, I used to stop by that same Krispy Kreme on occasion. The smell was so delectable. Then there was also the one out on Kingston Pike. Krispy Kreme was a Tennessee institution and oft used as a school fundraiser.
Li -- I probably have tried juggling donuts once but they fell apart so rapidly that it was impractical. Juggling apples makes more sense.
Sam -- It's only appropriate to honor the donut on this day.
Lisa -- The "hot now" sign at Krispy Kreme meant that one had to stop to get some.
Sarcasm -- Welcome to my blog. We will be glad to have you join us in next year's A to Z.
Graywolfie -- Coffee and donuts are a great communal experience.
Golden Eagle -- I'm sure that you are correct. There is probably a day to honor everything and if not there will be.
Carol -- It's good that they are supporting the Salvation Army since many stores have ousted their bell-ringers at Christmas. The Army does great work.
Lee
I made a New Year's resolution to be donut free for a year. This January past I renewed the resolution to be donut free for another year. I would really love to enjoy a donut but it was so hard to stop the cravings that I'd hate to break my resolution and start again. I know I sound like a smoker trying to quit, but looking back, I could say I was addicted to those tasty treats.
ReplyDeleteI want a donut now!!! could you believe I have never had krispy kreme? hre are none in my neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteA donut day? Wow :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your breakfast today!
Daily (w)rite
Cap -- You must have had a serious addiction to actually swear off like that.
ReplyDeleteJoanne -- Krispy Kreme are the Holy Grail of Donuts for some. I must admit they're pretty good, but I rarely get them cause they're not close to me either.
Damyanti --I did. I enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and I still have some left. Guess I know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow.
Lee
yum.
ReplyDeleteI love every kind I've ever tried, a little too much. :)
Yummy, I love a good doughnut. This past week is the first time I'd ever heard of National Doughnut day, I don't know where I've been.
ReplyDeleteWhenever, I think of donuts though, I think of the Dunkin' Donuts commercials in the 80's.....Time to the make the donuts!
Aww. I didn't have a doughnut yesterday - I was saving space for banana bread at a Starbucks writer's meeting. (That Starbucks doesn't carry glazed doughnuts, or I would definitely have had one instead.)
ReplyDeleteBut I did pick up two glazed timbits at the Tim Horton's donuts next to the grocery store this morning! Yumm!
By the way, the poll is still open for what book I should read and share my thoughts about next on the Kelworth Files, and I really need book lovers, (particularly science fiction and fantasy) to give me their opinion. So, come by http://kelworthfiles.wordpress.com/2011/05/29/a-wizard-of-mars-chapter-fifteen/ and check out the poll options!
mmmmm - fancy making that International Doughnut Day? (though we'd have to ban those awful baked alternatives the supermarkets in the UK are shoving at us!)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the comments just as much as the post!
ReplyDeletemmmmmm now look what ypu've done - I'm off to find some right now!
ReplyDeleteLx
I remember having doughnuts in our house all the time too. I think you love them just as much as him. Now I want a Krispy Kreme :(
ReplyDeleteHello :-)
ReplyDeleteI want to let you know that you have won an Award!
I want to show you that I enjoy your blog very much. Keep up the good work.
Stop by my blog to get it^^ If you don't collect awards that's ok too, I hope you will stop by and say hi anyway.
Have a wonderful day.
Mysteriousbooks
My birthday was National Doughnut Day??? And all I got was a stupid cake!
ReplyDeleteScarlett --- I think I've eaten a few too many myself.
ReplyDeleteHeather -- I'd never heard of National Doughnut Day until this week.
Kenilworth -- I'll check out the poll.
Dorothy -- No telling what's in the supermarket varieties. Gotta be from a doughnut shoppe.
Holly -- I'm surprised to get such a reaction over donuts!
Laura -- I've got a few left over at my house.
Emilee -- I remember when we would have our own Donut Days.
Rose -- Thanks! I'll be by to collect it eventually.
Chuck -- If it was a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting I'd take that over donuts.
Lee
i totally took advantage of national doughnut by visiting krispy kreme and dunkin donuts yes i was being a doughnut pig..haha
ReplyDeleteEveryday Life
Really?!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know this and coincidentally, I had a plain doughnut this morning for breakfast.
I also had some Krispy Kremes within the last few days because they opened up a new store in town and I wanted to try them to figure out what all of the fuss is about surrounding these particular doughnuts. Now I understand why they are a favorite among some people but still doubt that I will continue to eat them frequently....I don't need all that sugar, lol.
The Madlab Post
Yeah, it is a national treasure up here lol! It should be on the flag instead of the maple leaf!
ReplyDeleteOh dough-nuts! Drool! I haven't had a doughnut since I came overseas. One of the few things I actually miss about the states. Cream filled doughnuts with chocolate frosting were my favorite!! Those look so yummy I wanna lick my screen!!
ReplyDeleteMmmm....can I have one now, even though it's not National Doughnut Day anymore? I think I want to try making some at home too!
ReplyDeleteIf I didn't need to lose some pounds I would take you up on your generous offer. Oh, to heck with it. I'm going out for a butterfly with white frosting and nuts!
ReplyDeleteBecca -- Now that's a way to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteNicole -- Those Krispy Kreme doughnuts are definitely highly charged with sugar.
Eve -- I wish they'd open a Tim Horton's near my house.
Dafeenah -- Yes! Chocolate frosted cream filled doughnuts are a favorite of mine as well.
Carla -- Mmmm! Homemade donuts would be delectable.
Stephen -- I assure you that I'd don't need doughnuts either, but sometimes you just have to cave.
Lee
I missed Doughnut Day, which is probably a good thing. My summer stuff from last year is tight!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! I love me some doughnuts.
ReplyDeleteSet a glazed doughnut and a beautiful looking red apple (that I love) next to each other and I'm going to opt for the doughnut every time!
I'm very sorry to have missed out on National Doughnut Day! They are my favorite treat. But I have banned them from my diet! I swear one doughnut adds ten pounds!
ReplyDeleteI'm really upset with myself that I missed getting my free doughnut, even though I knew about it. Then again, I did get a pretty good dessert elsewhere so I really couldn't complain all that much. Guess I'll just have to keep my feelers out for free pancakes day at Denny's again. lol
ReplyDeleteTheresa -- I've been maintaining my weight but I won't if I keep eating donuts.
ReplyDeletePat -- Donut wins for me too. Maybe the apple though if I have some caramel dipping sauce.
Brianna -- Celebrate the donuts! You can fast after that. Yeah, like that's gonna happen.
Mitch -- I didn't get any free donut, but I polished off a dozen in three days.
Lee
What a fun story :)
ReplyDeleteAh but you have waaaay more varieties of doughnuts in the US than we have in the UK :O)
ReplyDeleteVery unique post! I heart doughnuts so I say doughnut veneration is a wonderful idea. :)
