You're the One (#BOTB)

The First of December--day number one of the final month of another year.  Time to reflect as well as to project into thoughts of the future.  What's ahead for 2020?  Plenty, but I hope this year takes its time to pass...

Reason for the Season

Whenever a Battle of the Bands opens on a Sunday I like to use a song with some spiritual connection--usually a hymn or a contemporary Christian tune.  When Christmas season arrives I might like to use a song specific to the holiday.  Though this BOTB falls on a Sunday which is the first day of the Christmas month, I am going to use neither type of song.  Instead, I'm using a song that was a popular hit in the sixties.  The title can have s few connotations in regard to this particular Battle.  You can probably come up with a few suggestions or you can just listen to the versions I'm presenting here and vote on your favorite.  The winning song is up to you--yeah, you're the one...

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens each month on the 15th and on some there is also a Battle on the 1st of the month.  My blog is one of those with a second Battle excepting over these summer months.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

You're the One

The song was written and first recorded by Petula Clark, but The Vogues bested her version with their own chart topping hit.   And here are both versions as performed in popular music television shows of that era...

Petula Clark   "You're the One"  (1965)

Pet Clark's career began in England during World War II, but it skyrocketed in the 1960's with the British music invasion of the sixties when she scored several hit records.  Her release of her own song "You're the One" was not one of her biggest hits, but it's a nice song...

The Vogues  "You're the One"   (1965)

Anyone familiar with this song might be more apt to remember this version by The Vogues.  After all, they had a bigger hit with the song than the one who wrote it and initially recorded it.  Is this version the one you prefer?...

Time to Vote!

Which version of this song do you like best.?  Don't be the one who doesn't vote!
Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. Which version do you like the best?   You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours.

Winner of this Battle Announced on Monday December 9th

There will be a post for the Insecure Writer's Support Group on the 4th so be here for that. And by no means miss the winner's announcement post next Monday.  Stay warm!

Who is your "one"?   Are you feeling the Christmas spirit yet?   Would you prefer to hibernate until next spring?

Strange relics from the past. It's funny how Petula Clark is standing there singing in a pretty classy looking dress, while background go-go dancers in tank tops do a bunch of silly flailing around and canned audience "screaming" seem completely disconnected from the song Petula Clark is singing and how she's presenting it.

And then we have The Vogues backed by go-go chicks who look almost identical to the ones backing Clark, and they are dressed somewhat similarly and doing the same sort of silly, simplistic dance moves. Despite the artists being an ocean apart, could the same producer have been responsible for both shows by Clark and The Vogues?

Anyway, I'm going to vote for THE VOGUES. Although I normally like Clark's singing, her voice seemed a bit harsh in places here. (Or maybe it was really just the canned "screaming" sound effects that made her voice seem harsh to me.)

    1. STMcC, I almost added a vote for your favorite background go-go dancers. I used these two clips purposely because of their similarities. The go-go dancer motif is so common in clips from that era.

First vote goes to The Vogues.

  2. I didn't realize that Pet Clark had done this. As far as I'm concerned, The Vogues' version is the definitive one, so I'm going with them.

    1. John, I hadn't realized it (or maybe remembered it) until a few years ago when I heard Pet's version on the radio with some added background info. It was then I decided to someday do this Battle. It took a while, but here it is at last.

      Again it's The Vogues.

  4. If I get to have a vote (I'm not participating), it would be for The Vogues. I can see how their version bested Petula's, but hers is good as well. Just not as good.

    1. CW, the Vogues were a good vocal group, but I think over all I prefer Petula as far as careers go.

  6. Aaaargh, don't make me choose? I love both of these.
Since everyone so far is going for the Vogues, I'll cast my vote for Pet Clark.

  7. Vogues for sure. Petula Clark sounded like she was forcing the song out. My one? The guy I've been married to for 35 years. Christmas spirit is coming but slowly. I think we'll be getting a tree next weekend so I expect it will be in full force soon.

  8. Nice song choice, Lee. I was sure I'd vote for Ms. Clark until I listened to (and remembered) the Vogues. Loved the whole arrangement, especially the harmonizing. Vogues get my vote ;-)

    1. Diedre, Vogues got a lot of airplay with this song in the sixties.

  9. Lee,

I can't say 100% for sure I remember 'You're the One' but I definitely like The Vogues the best. My 'one' and only is DH. :)Yes, yes, yes I've got the Christmas spirit oozing all inside and out of me. I love this time of year!! Sometimes, I'd like to hibernate until spring but waking up to realizing three months of my life disappeared wouldn't be a good feeling, so I'll just take the good with the bad whatever it brings and do my best to enjoy it all. :)

    1. Cathy, the song is a bit before your time and I don't think it's been played all that much since the sixties so you might not have heard it before or not enough for it to register with you.

Like you, I'd hate to lose three precious months of my life so I'll put up with cold if I have to. Outlook is everything.

      A vote for The Vogues.

  10. I vote for the go-go dancers in the Vogues clip, vs. the hard-to-see dancers in the Pet Clark vid.

I miss the blantant acknowledgement that men enjoy looking at pretty women, and go-go dancers were innocuous evidence of that. Now, it is either just sexist, or maybe they'd mix in some guy dressed like a woman and tell us we have to like the view. If we don't, we're transphobic.

    1. 6-Gun, I still like to look at pretty women, but I just don't say too much about it so I don't offend anyone. Some can say I'm old-fashioned, but the way I see it is that I am right and the Bible tells me so.

I was kind of transfixed by the go-go dancers.

      The Vogues for the dancers.

    2. HA! Well, I really wasn't choosing the Vogues just for the dancers, although they get my vote over the Pet C. dancers. You had mentioned possibly having a vote on them in your response to StMcC, so I went with that.

I ALSO like the Vogues singing better'n Clark. In fact, since this BoTB, I've had their version playing in my head multiple times daily. A blast from my yout.

  13. I was all fired up to vote for Petula Clark, mid-listen, and sure that no one could change my mind. Dementia! You got me again! I totally forgot the Vogues version (which actually is more familiar to me...I just like Petula Clark...and Lulu...all those 60s/70s chicks).

    Decisions, decisions...THE VOGUES!

    Happy holidays, Arlee!

  15. Thanks Arlee for this Battle. I’ll have to go with Petula Clark I think. She did come and live in France, singing in both languages. I saw her at one of her concerts in Eastbourne in 2008 and she still retains her astonishing voice. Art keeps you young. Enjoyed the Vogues version too and understand how these stunning young men turned all those teen girls’ heads ! My vote goes to Petula nevertheless. Merry Christmas writing.
