Life is filled with walls that are needed as well as those that are desired. Walls can protect us from the elements, keep us secure from potentially harmful intruders, and provide privacy when we don't want others to see us. However, there are sometimes those walls that stand in our way to keep us from moving forward. Schooling and formal education are sometimes walls that become barriers to our creativity.
We sometimes construct our own walls that limit us. Our communities, friends, and family members can put up walls that are obstacles to be overcome. With so many walls confronting our paths to success it's often left up to each of us to find our own ways around or over these walls.
When I was in school as a kid and then later in college, I played by the rules when they made sense to me or when it was a matter of doing what I needed to in order to keep on progressing. Sometimes however I armed myself with a sense of humor, a stubborn persistence, or pure logic and reason to make it to the other side of whatever wall stood in my way.
In these days of my life there are still the walls that must be overcome in whatever ways they need conquering. Ultimately there are few things that can hold us back more than ourselves. I am my biggest hindrance. I build walls and then have to figure a way to knock them down. Not building those walls in the first place would be the biggest time saver and eliminator of stress.
There are enough walls that life puts before us without us raising our own silly walls. Count me guilty of putting up walls of excuses, distraction, and dalliance. What about you? Are you aware of the walls that keep you from reaching your goals?
Battle of the Bands: Another Brick in the Wall
Most of you are probably familiar with this song by Pink Floyd, but if not you can find the original version by clicking here. Don't vote on their version--only use it for reference. The song has been covered numerous times and in various styles. This Battle of the Bands edition offers two versions that are very different from the original.
Daria Plyushko "Another Brick in the Wall" (2011?)
This Russian fashion model has several music and fashion videos on YouTube, but otherwise I didn't find much about her. Take a listen to her laid back lazy sounding version of "Another Brick in the Wall". Since this is a "chill" version it has a comparably lengthy instrumental intro to set the mood, but then again this version is only a few seconds over three minutes so it's pretty darn short despite that instrumental intro.
Gavino Loche "Another Brick in the Wall" (2013?)
In other BOTB contests between vocal and instrumental versions, some of you prefer hearing the lyrics. Maybe you'll prefer the previous version because of that, but then again the virtuosity displayed by Gavino Loche might sway some voters. I'm sure the musicians out there will especially appreciate this version of the Pink Floyd song.

What "walls" have been standing in the way of your personal progress? How do you get past the walls that hinder you in life? Has anything in your educational history had a detrimental effect upon your creativity?
Both versions are very different takes on the song. And missing the heavy guitar crunch.

I am so utterly terrified of criticism, rejection and failure (and with that total humiliation) that I just cannot seem to pull the trigger on really selling my crafts and photography.

You're so right about our own walls getting in the way, Lee! My downfall is being hyper-critical of everything I write and thus it gets bogged down in re-writes, then I get frustrated and set it aside. :P
ReplyDeleteAnother interesting BOTB this week. I didn't much like Daria's voice and the jazzy tone doesn't really suit the song, IMO. Gavino's guitar solo is something I would listen to, though, so please give him my vote.

I am a fabulous mason, unfortunately. I think I must bang my head against my walls for a while before I realize they are present. I'm not sure if my education had anything to do with my walls, but I do know I went into areas (science) where I thought I could excel instead of following things I might actually want to do (art).

What an amazing, brain busting choice you gave us today! I wish you'd make it easier to decide. I absolutely love the clean, pure acoustic guitar licks executed by Gavino Loche as he played "Brick in the Wall." It's a wonderful performance. I have a feeling I'm going to be on the losing team again today and perhaps save you from a rout, but I'm a sucker for a pretty face and a girly voice and I'm compelled to vote for model/songstress Daria Plyushko. Her intimate vocal grabbed me (I won't say where) and I also appreciate the clean, uncluttered instrumental accompaniment. Daria gets my vote by a hair... a blonde hair.
Shady, the chill-out version is nice to relax to. Daria's voice puts me in mind of Astrud Gilbreto or Claudine Longet. Nice sexy singing that's as close to breathing for stress release as you can get with a voice.

How 'bout under 'em? Sometimes I go under the walls. Did that especially when I was a kid. All I'd need was a heavy-duty spoon and a lot of patience.
You said some time ago that the BOTB contest you had planned for today was going to be somewhat "odd". Right away, I started to cringe - thinking of some that I considered odd, which you'd done in the past, and which I wasn't such a big fan of.
I'm happy to report that I don't find this one odd at all. In fact, it was good and interesting as it contained two very different versions I could listen to all the way through without feeling I wanted to cut either song short.
Although neither song caused me the least ear discomfort, my vote is easy to cast:
I enjoyed the percussion sounds in the Daria Plyushko cover, but I rarely warm up to those kinds of breathy, li'l girlie vocals. A bit "too cute" and lacking any real sense of urgency or heartfelt meaning.
On the other hand, the Gavino Loche recording is stellar - I even played it for a second time just for the pleasure of hearing it, after I knew unquestionably that I was voting for him. Man, that guy's got a great style and sound. I liked being able to watch his hands and see how he was getting all those little sonic textures.
Good Battle, Lee. It may turn out to be pretty lopsided in the end, but it was still a "good" Battle and not (what I would consider) an "odd" one. Thanks for dat!

DeleteWhen I said "odd" I was thinking what already a few have indicated in that the versions are little like the hard edge of the original. Actually I had some odder versions of this same song originally scheduled and decided not to use them right now. I've scheduled them for next September--maybe.
I agree that watching Loche play is a real treat and hearing the sounds he gets out of the guitar is "stellar".

Hi Lee. I think I've hit a wall trying to decide which version gets my vote. I love Daria's music but don't like her voice. Her voice is too "soft" for the material context. Gavino is on a sole instrument, with an incredible capture of the original feel of the song. Maybe it's a mood thing right now - I'm voting for Daria. Great battle.

ReplyDeleteBut we are talking about your battle. I really liked the first version. Sounds like something I could listen to on a smooth jazz channel. But I hated how abruptly it ended. I really didn't like that. I wanted to hear more. The instrumental was also nice, and though the lyrics are great in the song, I don't feel I need to hear the lyrics, especially with my favourite songs. I guess that's the karaoke in me. Place my vote for Gavino. Had the first song gone on to completion, I may have been swayed more that way.
Jeffrey, yeah, the abrupt ending was kind of bad. I found another YouTube version of this but it had the same abrupt ending. I think it was close to the ending with not much more to go.

ReplyDeleteI prefer to smash through them. Generally I believe my path as the best one. I consider what I am doing before I do it, and think it the course to pursue. If someone throws an impediment my way, my usual modus operandi is to keep pushing until it gives.
As for the song: I never liked Pink Floyd, and never liked this song very much. That being said, Floyd's own version is a thousand times better than Daria's lazy version. Man... to me that was simply awful... except for a too-brief section without her voice and WITH a Spanish guitar sound.
And Gavino Loche's version was as much better than Floyd than Floyd's was of Daria. Great guitarist! And no singing! Awesome. Vote Gavino Loche!!

I have to admit to building walls in my life, even though I've tended to try knocking some of society's down. Think its a kind of procrastination or evasion of taking personal responsibility.

Lucky to have known some great musicians during my varied careers, including David Gilmour as his wife owned horses. Favourite guitarist will always be my best friend Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis).

I think there is a danger in considering education a wall. I think people who think that don't actually have enough education--I mean I agree that creativity can be stifled following certain rules, but what is really needed is knowing the rules well but then knowing what breaking them does and doing it intentionally. I am probably a bit defensive on this as I grew up in Idaho and the attitude education is some conspiracy to put us all in servitude to "the man" is more prevalent there than anyone. It is hurting the economy and understanding of the people there and I find it sad. As for bands--I always want the lyrics. I like music, but the words are what give it the magic to me.

The problem we are facing in public schools and colleges is more in the sense of indoctrination than education. When the opinions of others are forced upon us and sometimes even grades received depend on conforming to the regime then we start having a big problem. We lose real education and become elements of the society of conformity. It's totally dystopian.

I'm a long-time Pink Floyd fan, I bought the four CD pack when it first came out. Drove my first hubby nuts to come home and find that blaring from the speakers. I like both the instrumentals, and Lazy has a beautiful voice.
But Gavino gets my vote. I know the words so well, and he made the guitar just sing them. Amazing how he did all that by himself. Gilmour would be so pleased with it.
Dolorah, old habits are hard to break. Learning new things seems to rouse a resistance within many of us.

Oh, I'm definitely a fine masonry! So good am I that I find it really difficult to tear those walls down when I finally get tired of hitting them. I love both covers of this Pink Floyd classic. I love the chillaxing music arrangement and vocals by Lazy, but then Gavino's unique guitar solo is amazingly done. This is a tuffy for me, Lee! I think I'm going to cast my vote for Lazy. Her sound just sorta meshed with my mood today. Great, fun battle!

I am the worst procrastinator. I also imagine things to be harder than they will be and avoid them and then when I finally conquer the work I am surprised how easy it was. And no I don't learn from this and repeat the same mistakes, not with the exact same task, but with new ones.

Ah, yes, those blasted walls. I used to have them up against everyone but then life hit me square in the face and I had to learn to take down those walls, especially in communication (aka stubbornness) and ask for help. After that, other walls I put up started to come down too.

Has to be Gavino for me. It carries the feel of the Pink Floyd original even without lyrics added. The Daria one was hmm ... uh ... flaccid. I suppose that could be thought of as a lazy version but lazy can be nice. If she isn't going to care, I'm sure not going to. And since I first heard these a couple of days ago, I've been singing the song. And I work part of the time at a school. Nice one.

Jan, not a song teachers want to hear the students singing probably. I prefer being in control of my environment so being in charge of the walls instills a sense of power over my situation.

I definitely have a wall of distraction and also a wall of introversion which causes a lack of interaction with others, especially at church where I should be striving for fellowship.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, you're not the only one. I'm the same way and at church I sense that there are others who are in a similar state. My wife and I rarely get involved in church events, but I guess we've been trying more to socially interact.

I try to keep my kids' creativity free at home, but their school is actually good at allowing creativity and individuals to flourish. I wish all public schools allowed for that.
ReplyDeleteShannon, I think so many teachers are confined by standards and core curriculum that they lack time for more creativity. Talents are wasted for the sake of conformity.
