Welcome to Tossing It Out for Day one of the Blogging for A to Z April Challenge. If you want to know more about the Challenge you can visit the A to Z Blog. Also, a regularly scheduled event on this blog every 1st and 15th of the month is the Battle of the Bands. So in this post you get a double whammy conveniently tied together with a common thread. More on the Battle after the first marketing concept. My A to Z Theme for 2014 is Marketing Concepts from A to Z.
Act Naturally
Unless it's part of the role you're playing, no one cares much for a phony. You can play a part like Pee Wee Herman or the band members of Kiss if that's your shtick, but when it comes to serious marketing efforts playing the buffoon can only go so far.
We've all encountered the sleazy salesman who may even come across as completely sincere, but once we feel duped then we lose confidence and don't go back to that person. Some public figures may come across as haughty, unapproachable, or condescending. If you're trying to make inroads with someone whether it be a potential customer or someone you want to go out with on a date, if you sell yourself, your brand, or your product in a genuine manner you're going to make your prospect a lot more receptive to what you have to say.
Nervous? Shy? Afraid? Don't worry--those are natural feelings that most of us share and they can work in your favor in many cases. Just be yourself. Act naturally. Eventually you'll get used to being out there before the public and self-confidence may become part of your natural persona. It might take some practice so be persistent.
Battle of the Bands: Act Naturally
The Battle of the Bands posts spotlight two versions of the same song. You the reader pick your favorite version and let us know in the comments which version you chose and why. At the end of this post you'll find a list of other bloggers who have usually been participating. If you'd like to start joining us let us know in the comments and we can add your link.
"Act Naturally" is the obvious song pick for this Battle. The song was first recorded by country artist Buck Owens in 1963. It became Buck's first number one hit and catapulted him into stardom after toughing it out for many years in the music business. Buck later co-hosted the popular television cornpone comedy show Hee Haw for a number of years. Here's the song that made Buck Owens a star:
Buck Owens "Act Naturally" (1963)
The Beatles "Act Naturally" (1965)
Once the Beatles had established themselves as teen idols they had personas developed for each of them. Girls had their favorite Beatle and recognized each of the lads for their personas. Ringo was the funny one. Most Beatle albums had at least one song that featured Ringo and the song was typically a novelty type song. In 1965, The Beatles' cover of "Act Naturally" appeared on the B-side of the monster hit "Yesterday". Here's The Beatles with Ringo Starr on vocals with "Act Naturally":
Time to Vote!
Now it's up to you to vote for your favorite version of "Act Naturally" and tell why you preferred that version. Let us know in the comments. I'll announce which version won next Wednesday April 9th. The next Battle of the Bands will be on Tuesday April 15th.
Here are some other bloggers who may be participating in the Battle of the Bands:

Do you have a difficult time acting naturally around people you don't know? Can you think of a good time to put on a false front? Do you feel betrayed or let down when you see a person you admire from a perspective of which you disapprove or with which you disagree?
That's a tough one. I like the original because the song and singer both have a "country" feel. I have to vote for the Beatles version though, Ringo has always been my favorite. Love the "Battle of the Bands" concept in general!
ReplyDeleteHello Mr B . . . .can I be slightly silly . . . . . just a bit . . . . . . please . . . . .
ReplyDeleteFlutter eye lids
My vote goes to The Beatles. I'm too loyal a fan to vote against them!
ReplyDeleteI like Buck Owens' version the best. Why? Simple, this song I put with his voice first. I guess, I just remember him doing it more and then maybe it's because it just suits best when he sings it.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't have a difficult time acting naturally around others. I may tone myself down for fear of painting a negative impression in newcomers' minds, but usually what you see is what you get with me.
I try to not put too much importance on how performers live their lives because the majority of them do not live the way I do, but people I know & love may disappoint me from time-to-time. That's just a normal part of life. None of us are perfect, no not one.
I'm gonna have lots of fun visiting you, since you're approaching the challenging through song. :)
I'm already following (GFC & Twittter) you!
Act Naturally is something I completely agree with. Putting on a phony act is just not my scene.
ReplyDeleteJust waving and saying a hello from a fellow A-Z blogger, I am glad the first day has started was feeling rather nervous about it of course you are a pro at this, fab full blog btw x
ReplyDeleteI'm going with Buck Owens. It just appeals to me more, possibly because I feel so saturated with Beatles stuff over the course of my life (my Dad, ex boyfriend and umpteen of my friends are HUGE fans) so hearing Buck Owens sounds refreshing.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, acting naturally is always the way to go.
I'm all about The Beatles, and I love this song!
ReplyDeleteNice blog. Though acting naturally is what I like in others, it is not always easy to do (for them or for me).
ReplyDeleteIt's the Beatles! Awesome post ♥
ReplyDeleteWith me, what you see is what you get.
ReplyDeleteSorry, listened to a whole ten seconds of the first one and had to stop. My vote goes to the Beatles.
And we are off to an amazing start!!!!!
Hello from a new AtoZ challenge person :)
ReplyDeleteBuck Owens definitely - I'm not a huge country fan, but Ringo's version sounds like bad Irish country and western!
In folk music, we're expected to talk on stage and it takes a long time to learn to Act Naturally, but life suddenly takes on a turn for the better when you can.
You see politicians or public figures who are 'dripping with sincerity' - and some believe that 'when you can fake sincerity you've got it made' - but there's nothing like the real thing. Great post - I'll be back for more Battles of the Bands.
While I really like the Beatles, you just can't beat the Buck Owens version of "Act Naturally". Besides, for me, he's easier to understand :)
ReplyDeleteDear Lee! Great to get back to April once more! Thank you for this! I am going to have to vote for the Beatles for one reason: my sweet husbands fave band is THE BEATLES!
ReplyDeletexox jean
Awesome!
ReplyDeletethe Beatles, naturally!
happy a day!
When I was younger, I used to try to live up to other people's expectations, and it was difficult for me to act naturally. I know better now. It is much better both for people around me and for myself to be just as I am.
ReplyDeleteAs for the songs, I prefer the Beatles' version, because I like their voice better.
I had a very good time here today, reading your post, listening to the songs, and thinking about the importance of acting naturally.
Being genuine and acting naturally makes such a huge difference. People can spot a fake a mile away. We like the real thing, after all. Now there's a slogan that's been branded well :)

As much as I like Ringo, I'm going with the Buck Owens version, sounds more natural.
ReplyDeleteAbout your question, I used to have problems being around new people. Now, I'm past caring about what people think! ;)
I love how you connected this, Arlee.
Hooray A to Z has started. Beatle for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll vote for Buck Owens
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this A to Z challenge for another fun year
A Plus!
I love both versions, but my vote must go to the Beatles.
ReplyDeleteAs almost always, I have to go with the Beatles. Awesome stuff.
ReplyDeleteBrandon Ax: Writer's Storm
Hi, Arlee. The Beatles recorded a good cover of the song, but my vote goes to the original Buck Owens!
ReplyDeleteHappy A to Z-ing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines
Great start to the A to Z Challenge. I totally agree with Act Naturally. There's nothing more off-putting than a fake person.
ReplyDeleteAs to the Battle of the Bands ... sorry, but I don't like either. Hang me out to dry now!
All the best for April. :)
This was a close contest for me but I'll go with The Beatles. I don't always act naturally depending on where I am. I'm a really 'take charge' kind of person and I've learned to let others have the lead or spotlight even when my nature want to take over.
ReplyDeleteI actually find that when I don't act naturally I feel incredibly uncomfortable so it doesn't happen often. The only time I have to put on a pretense is when it would be rude to be myself (eg, I try to keep my bad moods to myself).. linking up for A to Z :)
ReplyDeletePS: I like the Beatles version more
I so remember both these songs by Buck Owens and the Beatles. Good advice, too!
ReplyDeleteActing like someone else takes too much effort and eventually the lies will catch up.
ReplyDeleteI like the Beatle's version.
LOVE the Beatles so "naturally" I would vote for Ringo's version of "Act Naturally."
ReplyDeleteI totally believe in being yourself. I can't stand phonies and those who act nice to others just to get something from them.
Being honest and authentic is the way to go!
Enjoyed your post!
I liked Hee Haw a lot and I greatly dislike the Beatles so I'm gonna have to vote for Buck even though I didn't listen to the songs.
ReplyDeleteI try to act naturally around people I don't know but mostly I'm so shy that I stand around feeling like I have a big flashing sign on my head that says, 'DOES NOT BELONG'. I went solo to a party at my fiance's niece's house last spring and I really felt so out of place w/o him there (he was on the road). So I just kinda stuck close to his parents and his other niece from Maine. He told me I didn't have to go but I felt like I should b/c I am part of the family now and should represent the both of us.
Definitely the original. The Beatles are trying to copy him. I guess I mean were.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's great to see so many comments. My computer has been rather slow to start the day so I'm not going to respond to every comment though be assured that I do read them all and appreciate every one of them. Thank you all!
ReplyDeleteAs for the Battle of the Bands, this one is going much closer than I had expected. I haven't kept track, but it looks like votes are running pretty even for both artists.
Lee
I agree 100% act natural, be yourself. First, I think you have to love yourself, or at least be the kind of person you'd want to hang out with. THAT, sells itself!
ReplyDeleteCristina from Filling my Prayer Closet
This is a tough one. I LOVE the Beatles, but I think I'm going to with Buck Owens because its a country song and he's a country singer.
ReplyDeleteDude - I will take Buck Owens any day of the week and twice on Sunday! I know the Beatles loved Buck and one of them recorded with him, but they can't come close to him!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the Beatles. I would definitely select them. I also like how much lighter it feels.
ReplyDeleteI like The Beatles's version better, because the other one sounds a bit like country and I don't like country. At all.
ReplyDeleteI love The Beatles, but there is a reason that Ringo was not a lead singer for that group. His singing is mediocre at best. Of course, this song is fairly good fit for him, but man he doesn't even come close to Buck Owens.
ReplyDeleteBuck Owens is smooth and the country feel of this song is perfect. There is a reason that this song catapulted his career... Buck and this song are like hand and glove.
Buck Owens for me!
I'm not that good at being someone else.
ReplyDeleteBuck Owens, hands down, but the Beatles' version ain't half-bad either.
ReplyDeleteHappy A to Z, Lee!
Thanks is my challenge. Putting myself out there. Once I'm out there, I'm usually fine.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in the Bible commentary you stopped. Would like to join up with you and continue it if you're still interested.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go with Buck Owens. It has a meatier feel to it. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat theme! I like good music.
I really can't stand phonies. Be who you really are all the time. I especially hate phonies at church. I want to put a basket at the door with a sign that says: Please leave your "everything is fine and I'm a good little Christian" mask at the door and come be real. Share your struggles and your doubts. Ask for prayer. Everyone has something in their life which is hard. Quit hiding and pretending that everything is OK!
ReplyDeleteAs to the battle of the bands, I'm going with the Beatles. It's a little less "twangy". Not much of a country music fan... but I love me some Beatles.

I'm actually surprised that the Beatles aren't running away with this contest. I guess Buck comes across as more of the real thing and a lot of you like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments!
Lee
It's The Beatles, for me!
ReplyDeleteGreat post idea - and both great songs!
A to Z: deborahdera.com & writingforpeanuts.com
Who else, but the Beatles.
ReplyDeleteI go with Buck Owens because he was singing from the heart and Ringo was doing it for the novelty of it (not acting naturally) Just my take on the songs --- great start, Arlee
ReplyDeleteI have to go with the Beatles. They treated me to hours of musical enjoyment. As to how I act, I'm not sure. If I'm uncomfortable I know I go quiet and when I'm around people I feel safe with I'm kind of a clown.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice. I'm voting for The Beatles' version. I like all of the Ringo songs (I know).
ReplyDeleteI like your theme! I am so glad that I found this challenge a few years ago. I am doing it this year with my new blog, Mom to 4.
ReplyDeletehttp://vsqzmomto4.blogspot.com
I vote for the Beatles on this one. Why? Well because I'm 62. Doesn't that make sense? Why should I make sense? It isn't natural of me...
ReplyDeleteAct Naturally can be hard to do sometimes. Love the old song!
ReplyDeleteI'vr got to stick with Buck on this one .
ReplyDeleteMy vote is for The Beatles! :)
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty close, but Ringo wins it for me! Congrats on another record breaking A to Z!
ReplyDeleteJulie
It will probably come as no surprise that my vote goes to the mop-heads from Liverpool!
ReplyDeleteLarry
I love this blog topic, i have been a sales person on up to teaching and everything in between. This is great advice for everyone! I loved the Buck Owens song but the Beatles are tops.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing. earthsblessing.blogspot.com
Love this topic.
ReplyDeleteBeatles all the way. :)
I couldn't act anything but naturally if I tried. It's got me into trouble more than once in life but then, that makes me a survivor...
Fe
I am a country girl so I vote for the original. I amof course a Beatles fan too.
ReplyDeleteI always try to act naturally unless it would be appropriate to act more professional than I am feeling.
I am a sports fan (and because I live in Philadelphia) I am often dissapointed by players that are not the good people I thought they were.

Acting natural is even important in an online community. Though it's tougher to detect motive in text, it is still possible. So, it's best to watch what you say. I've learned this lesson on several occasions.
ReplyDeleteStopping by for the A to Z Challenge. We're highlighting amazing authors this month. Check us out.
http://masqueradecrew.blogspot.com/search/label/AtoZ
Great points, Arlee. Sometimes it's hard to act naturally. It can just be so much easier to try and be what people think you should be. The bad part about that - you have to remember what part you were playing for who and why.
ReplyDeleteHappy A-Zing - thanks for coming up with the Challenge!!!

My preference is Buck Owens...just that I associate this song with him. I never heard the one with Ringo singing. Although Ringo was my favorite beetle. He was the least attractive of the lot and I couldn't stand the way all my friends swooned over Paul...so I loved Ringo.
ReplyDeleteHi Arlee,
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing!!

I'm all for acting naturally when it comes to my writing. Although, that's tough when I'm naturally pretty sure. Interacting online makes it easier at least.

As big as the Beatles were, I have to choose Buck Owens on this song. The Beatles rendition just sounds like a poor copy to me. It took me so long to be comfortable in my own skin and believe in myself enough to be myself and write what I truly love to write! Now that I am a mother, I can encourage my kids to be themselves and act naturally, to be genuine. It is the best advice I can give them, and they don't have to wait till they are past 40 to figure it out because they can learn from my example and shine now! Love you "A" post and looking forward to reading your alphabet. This is my 3rd year doing the challenge, and I couldn't be more excited! This is a great thing you started! Thank you. ♥
ReplyDeleteAct naturally, but then again sometimes a mask is necessary!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the original version!
Some excellent points about the topic of being genuine. We might work undercover while writing our blogs, but if we show a different persona in person our cover is blown. Who do we trust then?
ReplyDeleteGreat comments.
The Battle is heated in a neck and neck race.
Lee
Hi Arlee thanks for your wonderful challenge. This is my second year and I am getting so much more out of if because I knew what I was getting into this time!
ReplyDeleteI agree that most people can spot insincerity and phoniness a mile away and you will not help yourself at all.
Have fun with your challenge.
Despite the fact that I live in Georgia, I'm not a huge fan of twangy country music. Ergo, I'm gonna have to vote for the Beatles.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully said, Lee! I can definitely relate. I truly respect authenticity, it is so important.
ReplyDeleteWell, let's see here... do I vote for Buck Owens doing 'ACT NATURALLY', or do I vote for Ringo Starr acting like Buck Owens doing 'ACT NATURALLY'?
ReplyDeleteI'll go with the guy who was doing 'ACT NATURALLY' more naturally. (Heck, that didn't even sound like Ringo's voice to me.)
Not much to really contemplate here on this one. It's Buck's song all the way, so I vote for Buck... naturally.

'Loyal American Underground'
This is a tough one for me, the longer I've been writing the more introverted I get.
ReplyDeleteI reckon I could sing along better to the Beatles version, in a pub after a few beers.. naturally
ReplyDeleteAct natural, Be yourself - greatest advise that can never go old! And Arlee... it has to be Beatles all the way! :)
ReplyDeleteHello from another A to Z participant.... at least I hope I am. I tried to sign up but I don't see my blog listed so I may not have completed the sign up form correctly. I agree with you that we should "act naturally"
ReplyDeleteHave a good day
Buck Owens all the way. This wasn't even a 'REAL' contest as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteAs far as phoney people, I could go on for at least three comment block spaces, but since this is the A to Z thing, nobody wants to spend too much time on one comment. So...I'll just say the best policy IMO is 'to think own self be true.'
Beatles all the way :)

Definitely Buck Owens. Something about the era.
ReplyDeleteBeing natural online is somewhat more difficult than in the real world.
ReplyDeleteBuck Owens gets my vote this time though I'm a Beatles fan.
80 comments already? Really? Well, for the little it's worth, I'm going to go with Buck on the basis that the title IS act naturally, and the song is natural to Buck.
ReplyDeleteAlways a Beatle lover, but Buck Owens was my first, so I'll go with him! Aloha.
ReplyDeleteGail visiting for AtoZ
Have to go with the Beatles version, although both are great. Just stopped by because we've joined the A to Z Challenge and we're glad we found your blog. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteBEATLES ALWAYS THE BEATLES!
ReplyDeleteI've always like this song. But I never new the Beatles sang "Act Naturally" I although the Beatles did a good job.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought this song more of jazz up country song and I'll have to got with Buck Owens.
Been enjoying the challenge so far.
Coffee is on
Your posts are always fun, informative and interesting!

I loved that Buck Owens song.

This will be the biggest voting on any Battle of the Bands so far. And I thought it would end up a Beatles landslide. Maybe not. Thanks to everyone for voting on the Battle and especially for stopping by to leave a comment.
ReplyDeleteLee
I'm a huge Beatles fan but I'm going with Buck Owens on this one. I like the sound better. The Beatles one sounds too "tin-y". Plus hearing the Buck Owens version brought back memories of when I was a kid and my mom and dad would be watching HeeHaw. I used to get a kick out of that show too. So Buck for sure on this one.
ReplyDeleteActing naturally is the only way to go!
Love your BOTB concept and will look forward to future installments!
Thanks for being such a great A-Z host and organizer. It's my first and I'm already having a blast!
Thanks for stopping by my blog this morning. I'm all in favor of being yourself :) I'm also in favor of the Beatles.
ReplyDeleteI act naturally in all instances, except where more respect and care are warranted. I tend to curse a lot, yet do not during business, with church people and around children.
ReplyDeleteAs far as dating, I'm continually telling friends not to pretend to be someone in order to get a date. Once they are in a relationship and get comfortable, who are they fooling?
First off, Buck Owens hands down.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, it takes me a very long time to act naturally around people I don't know.
A-Z Challenge at Father Nature's Corner
I actually hadn't heard this song and I have heard most of the Beatles' hits! You know who I'm voting for!
ReplyDeleteMy vote goes to Ringo Starr. I think it's probably because I as a Beatles fan, but also because he actually did become a big star - bigger than Buck Owens - and he was rather a funny fellow.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right about acting naturally in marketing and other real situations. I don't like a phony - I'm turned off by them, so I know most other people don't either.
Thanks for the post - and the Challenge.
Superb advice! And even though I'm not a Beatles fan, I have to go with Ringo! :)
ReplyDeleteI've always liked the Beatles version -- actually for ages that was the only version I thought there was.
ReplyDeleteBuck Owens has my vote. :) Happy April, Arlee! Hope you don't min...YOU are my "A" post. :)
ReplyDelete100th comment!! Yay!!
ReplyDeleteBtw that is some lovely collection and a write up!!!
Beatles I think. Now I've got that song in my head! Good reminder to be who you naturally are - that's what people respond to in the best way I reckon.
ReplyDeleteThanks Arlee, great post!
Garden of Eden Blog
Well I always act naturally, or how I always act, which doesn't seem to be natural at all, but I try to act natural since i'm just naturally weird.
ReplyDeleteI like Buck Owens version better. I just thought it was more loud and joyous! : )
Hmm I think Buck Owens. I've never really been a fan of the Beatles. I know *le gasp* lol

Buck Owens hands down, must say the Beatles version is one of the few songs by them I'm not feeling at all. Definitely not quality singing on this one for them. Buck takes the gold and intrigues me.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm pretty much myself around anyone. I might try to smile more if I was in a bad mood earlier or something. But that's just to be polite. Maybe I might have been more like that in my teens. Well, not really. I was just more shy in my early teens than trying to be someone else. Though I did try little things but lots of teens do that.
The Beatles version is the shizzle!
ReplyDeleteHard to vote against the Beatles, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for Buck Owens...my dad loved his music and also Hee Haw. I'm going with Buck's version. Original is good!
ReplyDeleteHi Lee:
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to come around and say "hi". I'm not a-z ing, but its still in my head and I loved the experience in the past. Our computer and internet and life in general have been too up in the air to blog lately, but mayhaps someday!
All natural,
Ron
Beatles all the way, for sure. I do agree, with putting up the act, no one really survives for long...act naturally.
ReplyDeleteWow. You got lots of comments on this one. I actually read it yesterday, but I was at the coffee shop, and wanted to have a listen to the two versions of Act Naturally, so here I am at my own kitchen table, relaxing, listening, and reading blogs. I vote for Buck Owens. I'm sure that's who I heard it from first, as a kid. My dad is a huge fan of country, Buck, and Hee Haw!
ReplyDeletePlay off the Page
Easy-peasy! Buck has the voice for it. The Beatles do not.
ReplyDeleteI have to go with the Beatles. I'm so glad your A-Zing about marketing, I need help in that department!
ReplyDeleteI vote for Buck Owens! Why? Because this song is supposed to be sung with that twang that only the Bakersfield Sound can bring. Buck Owens is a big deal around here and he put Bakersfield on the map.
ReplyDeleteLove all of Bucks music! And I got to meet him in person at The Crystal Palace!
This turned into one heck of a contest. The music race may be close but there are more by far who like the idea of "acting naturally" and are intimidated by marketing. And that's understandable!
ReplyDeleteLee
It's that time of year again! Wow, you combined the A-Z Challenge with a Battle of the Bands, too! When I was younger, I was extremely uncomfortable in my own skin. With age, I am finally letting go of my insecurities and acting more natural. The closest I can think of a time when it is a good time to put on a false front was when my friends and I got into a confrontation. I am normally passive, but something snapped am I displayed an unnatural aggression. That aggression somehow diffused the situation and we avoided getting physical. Other than that, I totally agree with not giving off that sleazy salesman vibe. Good Luck with the rest of the challenge!
ReplyDeleteBTW, sorry to intervene here, but as I don't want to plaigerize BOTB without credit, or admitting to it, I'm having a sort of BOTB on my Time Machine post Friday Morning. Reason being, I have a same song, different lyrics case going on and thought it might be fun. Drop in at Tilting At Windmills, look for the 45 at 45 smack in the middle of this week's episode of Time Machine!
ReplyDeletehaha -- I act naturally and many people don't seem to like my natural goofy self, but I'm okay with that! :) I yam what I yam!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the Beatles version!
Yes to all of the above on the advice part. It's hard to want to get up in front of people and "sell" myself...
ReplyDeleteBig Beatles fan, but my vote still goes to Buck Owens. He embodies the spirit of the song more convincingly.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to go with The Beatles on this one. Mainly because I'm a fan of them and honestly am unfamiliar with Buck Owens.
ReplyDelete
