September 2 question - Do you have a favorite character archetype you tend to gravitate toward in your writing?
If I were to come up with my favorite character type I'd have to say it is myself. My stories usually have been extensions of who I am or fantasize myself to be at any particular time. My stories are typically my stories. They read like an autobiography that might be deciphered if one knew the code.
Maybe eventually I'll write more so that I'll have to go beyond myself and into the lives of others. Or maybe I'll just write memoir.
Just so I write something. Anything.
I think we all draw from ourselves at least a bit when creating our stories.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a little bit of ourselves in every story.
ReplyDeleteI've used experiences from my past to help me craft my stories, and I tend to choose heroines I can relate to (both to write and read about). A badass fighter type might be exciting, but I can't relate to her. Or some shallow, vapid thing. I try not to show too much of myself in my books, but I likely reveal more than I realize.
ReplyDeleteI have a little bit of me in all my characters, but I often change one element so it's not me. Like in my most recent one, I gave the character a fear of something I actually love. I'm not sure if it's possible to write without some bit of ourselves sneaking in.

ReplyDeleteYou are a great character persona. In my characters I tend to make them better than me. Smarter, funnier, all the stuff I'd like to show.
