Do you sometimes look back upon your life and think "I should write an autobiography"? Or think of some period of your life that might be good material for a memoir? Maybe you should write it. Maybe I should too. It's my life after all. And that sounds like a cue for...
Battle of the Bands
Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. I do this event each month on the 15th and the 1st of the month. The premise is simple: Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it. Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.
It's My Life
This song originally by the English New Wave/Synth Pop movement band Talk Talk was a big favorite of mine back in the eighties and the band produced music that I continue to enjoy to this day. Talk Talk did not achieve the recognition that I think they deserved, but "It's My Life" did reasonably well on the world wide charts. Years later the bigger rock group No Doubt released their excellent version to even greater chart success. I think they are both good. Which one do you like best?
Talk Talk "It's My Life" (1984)
No Doubt "It's My Life" (2003)
Time to Vote!
It's your life, but put some fun in it by voting on this Battle. Which song interpretation do you prefer? Battles are no fun without you the reader participating. Hopefully you have an opinion of some kind. You don't have to know about music to have an opinion since it all comes down to your own personal taste.
Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours. I don't know if anyone else will be doing a Battle this time around, but you can still check out these sites.
Here are some other places where you might find BOTB posts:

Sound of One Hand Typing

Ahh! My favorite! That very low testosterone Pop from the '80s.
ReplyDelete3:24 was as much as I could tolerate from Yak Yak. As Agent 86 would say: "Missed it by seventy-eight seconds".
Although there is definitely some doubt about it, I guess I prefer No Doubt. At least they can't be charged with being the originator.

STMcC, again my eclecticism has rankled you. I not only like the 80s music but also I like music from throughout the centuries to this day. Some I don't but I'll give all of it a chance. And the eighties music carried me pleasantly through hundreds of thousands of miles of driving so I have a fondness in my heart for it.
DeleteBut we all have our musical stories. By the way, condolences for the loss of Todd Snider.
First vote goes to No Doubt.

BOIDMAN ~
DeleteI wouldn't call it "eclecticism"; and it definitely did not rankle me. I am not rankled by trivial matters like music. What rankles me is walking into the living room and always finding my Brother glued to Fox News and buying into every bit of b.s. that emanates from the big mouth of Orange Man Bad.
I'm curious to know what really happened to Todd Snider. Because the bizarre story I have heard seems full of holes and unanswered questions. There's much more to this than has thus far been revealed.

STMcC, your brother sounds fine to me. What do you think he should be watching or doing instead of watching Fox. And who would you like to see be President?
DeleteI don't know what happened to Todd Snider, but I'll likely not look much further into it unless some really intriguing info come to light. But that's how it is with most things for me.
Lee
I'd like to see Bugs Bunny as President, Roger Rabbit as Vice President, Seckatary Hawkins as Seckatary of State, Jessica Rabbit as Attorney General, and Yosemite Sam in charge of the newly named Department of War. It couldn't be any worse than things are now and would be a heckuva lot more entertaining!

Well, I think Trump is the most entertaining President that this country has had (In a fun way). But after all, he has been an entertainer/celebrity for most of my adult life. Some people just get too emotional over him and other political stuff. It's all just background noise to the bigger story of the universe.
DeleteYou and I like this song and McCarthy doesn't. Not a surprise. Perhaps we may all three vote for the same version, however. since I will cast a vote for No Doubt as did he. Although - as StMcC said, there is some doubt about it. The three of us almost never align in our voting.
ReplyDeleteSixgun McItchyfinger
Ya know, with perhaps just a wee-wee bit more testosterone, you might actually PULL the trigger on that sixgun eventually, Mr. Itchyfinger. (Like a dog that's all itchy with fleas and no bite.)

6-Gun, When the stars align then something will happen I guess. Well, whatever.
DeleteI think it's a fine song and it struck me from the time i first heard it and it still holds up for me.
Another vote for No Doubt.

Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. Nor green, blue, pink and purple.

VOTE = NO DOUBT
ReplyDeleteJust enjoyed the 'style' a little more, although No Doubt did retain enough of the '80s vibe.
Ed, style is often the decider for me as well.
DeleteNo Doubt.

I have to go with the original, Talk Talk.
ReplyDeleteAlex, at last, a streak breaker.

I almost went with Talk Talk simply out of nostalgia, but it's NO DOUBT for me. I like the soft quality of Gwen's voice in parts of the song. She reminds me a bit of Madonna. I like that Gwen maintain the 80s sound in her version, too. Thanks for stopping by to remind me of your current battle. I can't believe it's mid-month so soon. Have bandtastic week, Lee!
ReplyDeleteCathy, yeah, Talk Talk brings back a lot of memories for me. I also like Gwen's voice as well as Madonna's. I don't think I have any No Doubt albums though, but lots of Madonna's. Christmas is almost here!

I always liked Talk Talk's version.
ReplyDeleteL. Diane, I used to listen listen to Talk Talk quite a bit.

I know both well and like both but I'm still going with Talk Talk. I prefer the style of that more than Gwen's version. I've been thinking about where my life has gone and in 20 yrs I'll be 81, which seems so short. It might be time to write....
ReplyDeleteBirgit, damn! You're young. I'll be 81 in about 6 years. Oh well, it was inevitable. If I make it.

Hi Lee, Hope I'm not too late to the party. Your opening paragraph grabbed me because we've talked about this before: I've always wanted to be a writer but for some reason I just can't get my shit together to actually DO IT! I don't know what stops me: probably fear that my work wouldn't be good enough or nobody really cares what I have to say (regarding writing a memoir), even though I think I've led a pretty interesting life. But it's the doubt. Indeed the self-doubt. Wish I had "No Doubt"!
ReplyDeleteExcellent battle here! I really do like both versions and No Doubt's version is certainly good; Gwen Stephani's voice is so powerful and I can understand that it saw good chart success.
However, I'm going to put my vote with Talk Talk. Because that's the version that brings back many fond memories for me. When it came out I was in my last year of college and you know how fun and crazy and wild those times can be back then. As soon as I heard it a flood of memories washed over and images flashed in my minds-eye and just made me smile and feel all warm inside. So for sure, my vote goes to Talk Talk.
(But it's a good match-up because both are strong contenders here).
Plus, and this had nothing to do with my decision, you know me and animals: I LOVED Talk Talk's video. I could watch that over and over! :)
Stop by and see me sometime. I just posted my 9th installment of my Rock 'n Roll Head to Toe series. Nine installments and still have yet to make it below the neck! There are a lot of body parts on one's head!! :)
I forgot to leave you a link to the RnR H2T index page with links to the various installments, in case you ever want to check any of them out; much easier than scrolling through my blog to find them. I really have to improve my blog theme layout one of these days. Anyway, here ya go: easy access if you want:

Michele, thanks for the link. I was looking for you the other day, but I couldn't find your blog. You're a writer. Doing the actual writing work is hard for me too. I've always had a lack of drive problem when it came to writing. Time's running out!
