I know some people push that you need a bunch of fans on your blogs and such to be able to use that as part of your platform, but I don't see why you'd want to put work into it just to have people reading who don't care what you have to say. How depressing. And paying for friends on Facebook? Pretty ridiculous. I feel like I have too many friends on Facebook and frequently think of cutting them all out. When you have to filter what you say to specific readers, it's too much.
