Rockin' the Vote! (#BOTB)

Can we trust the political polling that we see reported in the media?   For the most part the comparative results seem to be in a fairly close range, but I wonder how accurate this polling is.  There could be factors that the pollsters aren't taking into account, especially in this current presidential race as unconventional as it has been.   I guess we'll get a better idea after the upcoming election and the analysis of the polling that will undoubtedly follow.  In the meantime, please participate in the following unscientific election poll and let's see if a Battle of the Bands can serve as a predictor of the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential race...

The Premise of This Battle

I'm taking a risk on this Battle as I am using a song likely known to most or all of you by a group that you likely know--and some of you have indicated on past battles it's a group that you like.   For my other entry I'm using a song probably unknown to any of you by a group that you are most likely unfamiliar with.

These songs could theoretically be theme songs for each candidate.  In my mind I've associated each song with either Clinton's or Trump's campaign.  They are not actually songs used by either campaign, but they certainly could have been.  I won't tell you which song I've connected to which candidate--at least not until the results post next week--but I'll let you make your own designation.  And please don't be uncomfortable with playing along as this is merely intended to be a fun unscientific poll.

Are you ready?  Here we go then.  After listening to the songs below please tell us:

1)   Which song do you like best and why?

2)   Which song do you think works best for which candidate (Trump and Clinton only)?

3)    Are there songs that you think would be better for each campaign?

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event started by Far Away Series and now hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens twice each month on the 1st and 15th.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

Green Day "American Idiot"  (2004)

The group Green Day or their song "American Idiot" probably don't need introduction to most of you.  This song, which was released during the presidential race between George W. Bush and John Kerry, was Billie Joe Armstrong's anti-Bush statement.  The song and the album of the same name later inspired a musical production which ran on Broadway for about a year and continues to be performed around the world. When asked by an VH1 Storytellers' audience member if anyone who voted for George W. Bush was an "American Idiot," Billie Joe Armstrong replied: "No, just a misinformed idiot."   The video I've used includes lyrics if that's any help to you.  Also, if it helps, Billie Joe originally had come out as a Bernie Sanders supporter, but now he's changed his support--I'll leave it to you to figure who he supports now.

The Good Rats "Why the World Should Love the United States of America" (2013)

Sometimes referred to as "the world's most famous unknown band," The Good Rats have been around the New York City area music scene since 1964.  I first discovered them in 1970 after the release of their first album in 1969.  The album became a personal favorite, but when nothing by them caught my attention after that first release, I figured they had disbanded.  In the mid-80's I discovered a number albums by the group released after 1974 which I thought were even better than the first.  They became a favorite group of mine from that point on with their excellent hard-rocking albums with tasty musicianship.

This song I'm using for my Battle was a new one to me that I discovered when looking for appropriate America-themed songs to match up for my final election series post.  After several initial listenings to the song it began to take hold of me.  Then I watched the video on my big screen TV with better speakers and the entire experience hit me hard.  I felt a swell of pride for the U.S.A. as the iconic images flashed by on the screen.  As the final part of the video played, the part showing the grave markers and the workers and the people who make up the nation, I began to cry.  It was strange, but I was so filled with emotion.

Since that viewing I've watched many times and continue to feel waves of emotion, love for country, and a certain fearful sadness of where our country could be heading.  This has become my personal rock national anthem.  In the final scene we can see kids sitting on the floor with their grandfather Peppi Marchello, lead singer and original band member, who died on July 10th 2013,  not too long after their final album was recorded.  "Why the World Should Love the United States of America" is on this last album Afterlife released in 2014.   I encourage you to watch the video to see how the images affect you.

Time To Vote!

Which of these two songs do you prefer?   If you don't like either then try to play along and tell us which song you think is the least innocuous to you.

Then, if you are willing to play along with my polling survey, tell us which song fits the candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump the best.   After you've given your opinion on that, please tell us if there are any songs that you can think of that would be a better choice as a candidate theme song.

My polling experiment won't work unless you are willing to help out by giving your opinions.  There are no right or wrong answers here--it's just your opinion!  Don't worry if you don't live in the United States or don't plan to vote, all opinions are welcomed.  Thank you in advance for helping me out with this.

Winner Announced Monday November 7th

After I've tabulated the votes and analyzed the answers to the bonus questions, I'll compile the data into my results post which will appear on Monday November 7th, the day before official election day in the United States.   Provided that we get cooperation in the voting for this Battle, we might actually come up with a prediction about the outcome of the presidential election.

I look forward to seeing how this Battle turns out.

Are you reluctant to express your opinions to others regarding politics?   If so, why?    What do you think about this particular Battle?   Do you trust the polling in this election?   Are you looking forward to the end of this election of 2016?

  1. That was a good Green Day album and song, so American Idiot gets my vote.
The song fits both of them. Although for the title alone, I think Smooth Criminal fits Clinton better.

As for which song gets my vote, I'm going with Green Day.
And I think on any given day, each song could work for each candidate. Tough call here picking which song goes with who. I'll be interested to see who you match up... :)

#1: LEE, I don't like either of these songs, but I DO like this BOTB concept -- it's clever and fun.

As for my vote: I absolutely despise Green Day. They were the REAL idiots -- typically uninformed, young-skulls-full-of-mush Marxists.

Musically, they played rudimentary Punk slop -- meaning Loud, standard High School Garage quality. Worse still, they possessed not one iota of originality. I dare anyone to tell me what Green Day did that The Ramones hadn't done years earlier and much better. The Ramones couldn't play more than two licks either, but at least some of their lyrics were occasionally humorous in a "Dumb" kind of way.

So Green Day sucks and they really should have named themselves "THE NAKED EMPERORS" because they conned the sheeple outta their money while wearing nuttin'.

I don't really care for that GOOD RATS song either but at least it has a kind of "Funk Scratch" to it. They get my vote.

#2: I guess, in my opinion, the Green Day song works best to illustrate Hellary -- maybe. Hard to say because the lyrics are so poorly written. And THE GOOD RATS song is perhaps better for Trump, although I wish I could hear the lyrics better.

And my answer to question #3:

I think (Link>) THIS could be Crooked Clinton's campaign song.

And (Link>) THIS or (Link>) THIS could be Trump's campaign song.

This was a cool BOTB idea, Lee. I like how you worked it into the election and I enjoyed playing along, even though the songs weren't my mug o' beer.

    3. STMcC, I knew I could count on your vote from preventing a shut out in this Battle, but I figured you wouldn't care for either song much. If you listen to the Good Rats song on YouTube you'll find the lyrics in the notes beneath the clip. I really think you'd appreciate much of the music of the Good Rats since they often incorporate some jazzy licks with some unique lyrical content. This song took me a number of listenings before it really caught on with me.

Hillary probably wouldn't admit liking your theme song pick for her, but it's fitting. The Trump songs you suggested are good picks for his campaign.

A first vote for Good Rats.

Not following the candidates or the elections, I'm hard pressed to choose which one fits which candidate. I'll simply assume the first one fits Trump because it talks about television and he's had his own show on television. :D

  6. Interesting concept! ☺ Although I like Green Day, I never cared much for that particular song. Loved the Good Rats video! It's a real synopsis of American history, but the music wasn't as appealing. Hmmmm, okay give my vote to Green Day, only because I prefer Billy Joe's vocals. As for your poll, you know I'm a Canadian Liberal, which might make me a "Canadian Idiot" in some peoples' eyes (a real song by Weird Al. ☺ Based on that, I'm sure you can figure out who I think "American Idiot" suits best. 7. What a fun battle! Admittedly, I'm not big on either song, but I lean toward Green Day just because of nostalgia. And my take - I don't think either candidate is an American Idiot. People can joke about Trump all they want - I mean, he is an inherently ridiculous person because of his looks, the way he talks, etc. - but he wouldn't be where he was now if he was a complete moron. Same with Hillary. She's a cunning tactician, and love her or hate her she's definitely not dumb.

(Meanwhile, I couldn't really absorb/understand a lot of the lyrics of the other song to gather any real idea of what it's getting at)

    1. Beer, my understanding of the song "American Idiot" is that it doesn't refer to anyone in the running, but those who might vote for a person in the running--in the original case it was voters for GW Bush. Trump has mystified the left leaning crowd, but the "common" folk seem to get what he's about. Hillary is definitely very smart, but she counts on the stupidity of her followers to stick with her. That's my take though it might offend some. Oh well, when one is right they are often deemed offensive.

  13. Lee,

American Idiot is a popular song. I like the music but the lyrics seem to be written from a liberal standpoint and because of that alone I can't vote for it.

I really didn't care too much for the music of Why The World Should Love the United States of America represent everything that makes our country great - capitalism, inventions, freedom, music, .... These are things Trump wants for America. He wants businesses to return to the US. He wants to see factories thriving, coal mines booming, competitive health insurance options, cut in taxes, Gun rights protected, stronger military, better care for our Vets, Christian rights protected, less Big Government, tougher on crime, get rid of the corruption in DC, equality for all people, secured borders, illegals deported, keep extreme Islamist out, Americans safe, and more. What's not to like about these things? And, so because I like the words to this song I'm giving Good Rats my vote.

I don't mind sharing my political views with anyone who is respectful such as yourself but there are a lot of rude people who think because they are behind a computer monitor that, that gives them the right to unleash their ugliness. In general the moral decline in our society is very sad. People are not as nice as they were 30 years ago. Liberalism takes people's good judgement and common sense away. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts and May God bless this election!

I've seen some horrendous reactions to things that I've put up on social media and same with others. Somehow the left seems to think obscenity and rude words are just fine when they want to attack the other side, but they get mighty indignant if a conservative even makes a teeny little joke let alone expresses their views. What you say in your final paragraph pretty well nails the state of disagreement in America. You and I appear to be completely on the same page.

They have no sense of humor (you gotta be able to laugh at yourself, right?) and have they the narrowest line of sight (that's why they chose society over individual rights/needs). We're in the home stretch with less than a week away from learning the fact of our country. I'll continue to fight for what's right and do what I can through media shares regardless of the outcome. At least in the end I can say I did what I could to help my nation, my fellow Americans, and my family. 😊

  16. This is a fun BOTB!

I’ll do my best to play along while also presenting my own preferences. I suspect that with your readers I’m gonna be on the losing side of this contest, though.

My personal preference is far and away for Green Day. Obviously, I think StMcC is full of prunes on this issue. At least we have Paris, er... Petty.

I’ve liked Green Day since their major label release in the mid-90s, and paid to go to their concerts prior to the American Idiot tour, then that tour itself, then the 21st Century Breakdown tour. As an old guy, I do not fit their demographic. They are huge liberals and I loathe their politics, but what can I do? ONLY buy Ted Nugent albums? I don’t think so.

So, though I don’t like The Good Rats, their song more befits Trump, and the Green Day song probably fits Hellary. I suppose then, in your “rigged” voting here, that means I am voting for Hellary!!
One could argue on a technicality that people are indeed “American Idiots” to have been fooled so long by the Borgias… er, the Clintons, and that a vote for her can only be cast by a true Idiot!

I do have a couple of quick suggestions for better songs for the candidates, though:

for Hellary Clinton, some Merle Haggard:

  18. Hi Lee.
Popped in to see what you're up to and heard a song portraying the Democratic Party's take on American voters. I'm sure they are not all that stupid or deplorable. Liked the lyrics they make sense of what the rest of the world is seeing on television programming, biased reporting and hectic Democratic advertising. I've been in the advertising and marketing industry for about 3 decades now and know just how much of a lie it is.
The other song, as far as I'm concerned is also a load of cod's wallop. The song opens with the lyrics "I go to work every day because I live in the USA." And ends with the same lyrics, not true. There are millions of people living in America who don't have jobs because they allowed their manufacturing industries to be destroyed for the sake of cheap goods and the good life. They sing about America being there with food and medication in time of disaster. Is Syria not a disaster too? Where is the food and medication for Aleppo? I'm afraid America has caused much damage in countries all around the world and then pulled out and left those people who have to live with their actions to cope with deplorable conditions. It's very sad. I like American people very much but cannot stand their deceitful politics. America needs to have a major political upheaval or they will destroy this planet.
My vote goes to Green Day but that is not a a vote for the Democratic Party no matter who gets elected.
Sorry about the rather downer of a comment but this is something that has been bugging me since 1994.
Blessings to you and all the honorable people in America, Geoff.

    1. Geoff, interesting to hear your perspective of the U.S.A. though I think it might be a bit off base. Firstly, the song by Good Rats doesn't start and end as you have quoted and instead says "I count my blessings every single day because I'm living in the U.S.A." I agree with that sentiment though I'm not sure I'll stick with it so wholeheartedly after this election.

As for Aleppo I say screw all of the Muslim conflicts. Syria is not a disaster, but it is a religious/civil conflict that we need to stay out of. Our contribution of weapons and support should not happen. I think we should stay out and let them fight among themselves. I don't like seeing a dime of U.S. money or aid going to Syria or other countries involved in Muslims trying to conquer the world with their belief system.

I'll agree that America has caused a lot of damage throughout the world with misguided ventures, but they've done more good than harm. Now the trending toward globalism is a very dangerous way to go that will likely destroy what we have come to believe as Americans. All politics are deceitful and corrupt from my point of view. If Clinton wins this election the rest of us lose.

      A vote for Green Day.

I think you Arlee would take American Idiot for Hillary's campaign and Why the world should love the U.S.A. for Trump's. I have always loved the song American Idiot because it has so many themes relevant for all time including being conscious of your environment and making your own decisions despite other agendas trying to twist your thoughts. The other song I never heard before. While it is a nice song, I'm skeptical of anything that seems to push why I must love something. Yes the United States has done great things. But there have been atrocities as well that America has been accused of. Whether locally or abroad. So sure I love aspects of America, but I'm wary of others as well. Jamaican out. 26. My vote goes to American Idiot; I particularly love the fact that this edgy band went Broadway with it. Sort of spit on their own invented persona.

Which is why I say it is PERFECT FOR THIS ELECTION.
    - Nothing is what it seems.
    - The candidates are subpar.
    - The public is sick of Hillary-esque career politicians and in utter disbelief at all the traction Trump managed to pull off.
    - The media thinks they will drive this campaign and they've overplayed their hand, in my humble opinion.

So this liberal farce of a band/song works. Liberals aren't all that liberal; conservatives aren't sticking to their guns, either. If we don't vote with our heads, we will all be American Idiots.

But, remember...God raises Kings and pulls them down as He sees fit. A few good prayers for this country is the best political thing we can do.

  28. Lee,

This is an election full of vitriol on both sides. I admire you for opening up the can of worms here. Very brave of you.

I can't say that either if these songs lit my fire. I liked the second one better.

I think the first goes with Hills and the media (aka her accomplices, running mates, squashers of truth, and all-around bad guys armed with a dishonest, but powerful pen) who seem determined to make idiots of us all. The second goes to Trump. He often says things that make me cringe, but I think he truly does love this country.

Interesting side note: for years people have said they wanted to see someone run for the office who wasn't a politician. Well someone is and the media has done everything they can to bury the guy. Funny thing that.

    1. Robin, great minds think alike which is why I like you so much. Media seems to like to disrupt the will of the people and force their ideas upon the gullible.

      Another vote for Good Rats.

  29. The Good Rats, possibly since they were new to me and the riff was pretty cool.

  30. I believe you would have The idiot song for Hillary and the American song for Trump and I would switch it:) trump tower in Toronto just went into receivership by the way. You know how I think and I'm praying that Trump does not get in. Now on to the songs, I vote for the Idiot song because I like Green Day and this style whereas the American song got on my nerves at the end. Canadians can learn from the States because we need to show more of our patriotism but in the same vein, I know Canadians are very proud of their country and have been a major help in both World Wars and also the recent wars in Iraq etc.. even if we are more peacekeepers. I believe the U.S could learn that health care is not socialism and that we both could get more help regarding the education system since the States is horrible when it comes to learning since the States ranks lower than many other nations and, although we are higher than the States, we could still learn a hell of a lot. Green Day gets my vote

  32. Erika, so is that a wash? I'll take it as such and besides, it doesn't alter the outcome really.
