The Feeling (#BOTB)

Feelings are fickle things whereas true love should not be so.  There are those who let their lives be controlled by feelings and there are some who thrive on the feelings that feelings arouse.  Life and love might be metaphorized into a roller coaster, but that often can lead us down a reckless path that can devastate when the outcome is not what we had dreamed it might be.

Using the trivialized meaning of love, some might love my song pick for this round of Battle of the Bands.  On the other hand this song might generate a range of reactions anywhere from disinterest to hate--some of this reaction might be based on the original artist.  We shall see.  This Battle as I indicated in my previous post might be a bit controversial.  But I hope you do enjoy it.

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is the blogging event hosted by Far Away Series and  StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands.   This event happens twice each month on the 1st and 15th.   The premise is simple:  Listen to the songs presented below and then in the comments vote for your favorite and tell us why you liked it.  Then visit the links listed near the bottom of this post for more Battle action.

I'm a Belieber

Maybe you might consider it a bit of A to Z Madness, but I won't put any blame there.  It's just that in March I became somewhat of a "Belieber".  That's what they call the hard core Justin Bieber fans.  I might not be quite as extreme as those fans, but it was in March when I discovered Bieber's most recent album Purpose and was very impressed by what I heard.  Granted that I was also greatly influenced by the videos made in conjunction with the album.  If you are willing to devote 42 minutes to watch an outstanding dance video, check out Justin Bieber--Purpose: The Movement.  It's innovative and I personally think the music is pretty darn good.

I've never paid much attention to Bieber's music in the past, but I was aware that he was a very talented kid.  He has gained plenty of notoriety with his antics and dumb behavior and that is inexcusable.  With a current net worth of about two hundred million and rapidly growing, Bieber should try to straighten out before he totally crashes and burns.  He's only twenty two years old with access to just about anything he might desire.  Hopefully he'll find some common sense and take hold of his life.  If he plays his life right he could have a great future ahead.  I'll be interested to see where he goes with his future musical projects.

"The Feeling"

The story of how I came across Bieber's album is one of those down the rabbit hole YouTube stories.   My brother had asked me to buy him a CD by the heavy metal group called Badlands.  He named off some selections he'd run across on the internet and said that he be most interested in the album called Halsey.   As it turns out, Halsey is a female artist whose premiere album is called Badlands.  My brother didn't care much for her album, but I was intrigued by her music and started researching more about her on YouTube.  That's when I came across her collaboration with Bieber on the song "The Feeling".  Well, it just went on from there and now I've been listening to Bieber and Halsey a great deal for about two months now.  I'm still not tired of either artist.

"The Feeling" addresses Bieber's break-up with Selena Gomez as well as some of the crises in his personal life.  As with all of the other songs on the Purpose album, Bieber shares songwriting credits with a number of collaborators.

There are so many good covers of "The Feeling" that I decided this was well worth using as a Battle of the Bands song.   I'll include the version by Bieber and Halsey here, but please don't vote on it.  I'm only including it for reference if you are interested in hearing the original version.

Don't Vote on this Version:

You Can Vote on the Following!

Kingdoms with Macy Urrutia  "The Feeling"  (2015)

In this recording, Idaho metal band Kingdoms featuring star athlete and beauty contest contestant Macy Urrutia performs Bieber's song in the style of Fearless Records Punk Goes Pop series.  If you watch the video be sure to pay attention at about the 2:35 & 2:55 points when the male singer starts his heavy metal growling--the expressions on Macy's face are precious.  The whole band seems to be having a good time playing this song.

Mayven  "The Feeling"  (2016)

Mayven is a songwriting duo made up of Josh Sudduth and Beth Current. Before changing their name to Mayven they recorded under Beth Current's name.   After a stint in Los Angeles, they now work out of their hometown Frankfort, KY.   Enjoy their soft romantic take on the Bieber tune.

Time to Vote!

Hope you don't let the Bieber connection turn you off.  Just try to feel the music.  Let us know what you think about these two versions. Is there one that you prefer over the other?    If you're visiting a Battle of the Bands post for the first time then let me briefly explain.  Please give each song version a fair listen to decide which one you enjoy the most.  If you don't like either then at least tell us which recording was least innocuous to you. This comes down to your preference and it's as easy as that.

Please vote on your favorite by letting us know your choice in the comment section and tell us why you prefer the version you chose. Then after you've finished here, please visit the other blogs listed below who may or may not be participating this time around. And if you've put up your own BOTB contest let us know that as well so we can vote on yours

  5. Hi, Lee!

This post is a shocker, good buddy. I was expecting your "Feeling" song to be Irene Cara's "Theme from Flashdance" or something of that nature. I never expected you to embrace two of my favorite genres, modern pop and modern metal. Like you I enjoy following the endless chain of recommended videos on YouTube to see where it leads and I have discovered many new artists and songs using that method. As you know, I have been heavy into metal for the last couple of years and recently got into EDM, synthpop, dance pop, house and related categories. I recently added some Justin Bieber to my own collection.

I have no problem whatsoever with contestant #2, Mayven, and I predict the duo will collect most of the votes in your contest simply because many people are turned off by heavy metal death growls. I am here to save the day and prevent a shut-out by voting for the "Boise-meets-girl" metal band Kingdoms. For those willing to open their ears and listen, Kingdoms executes a beautiful power metal ballad featuring a pleasing blend of male and female lead vocals. The recording periodically shifts gears with aggressive cookie monster death growls which are music to my ears. I agree that the video became even better and more memorable by including "reax shots" of Macy scowling in disapproval as her male cohort growls. I love a band with a sense of humor and I wholeheartedly cast my vote for the metal masterpiece performed by Kingdoms.

    Thanks, good buddy Lee!

  6. While not a fan of Justin Bieber's, nor pop music in general, I do agree that he's a talented kid. He seems to be getting his life back on track, after pulling a lot of stupid stuff. The problems of vast wealth coupled with immaturity.

I'm going to vote for Kingdoms, although the vocals didn't thrill me. The redeeming quality was the metal guitar riffs. The second version was too saccharine for me.

    2. It boggles the mind! So rich and so young. He was born about two hours from here, in London, where I also lived, decades ago. We Canadians have been trying to disown him for a long time now. LOL It seems, he is slowly redeeming himself, though. Talk show host James Corden featured him on his show a few times and has only positive things to say about him.

    3. Debbie D, sadly when a person achieves a fame such as Bieber, Michael Jackson, and so many others, they become not only idols of adulation but also targets of derision, jealousy, and unfounded hatred. No matter how wealthy you are it must be a tremendous burden not to be able to be able to lead a normal life without continuously being mobbed and to receive constant criticism as well as pressure to keeping topping previous achievements. I can only imagine. The money sounds good, but everything else that goes with the position sounds like it could get old after a while.

    4. I agree. Having to deal with such tremendous fame and fortune at a young age can only lead to trouble, especially when you allow the wrong people into your inner circle. When you're young and naive, you don't know any better. Thankfully, I think Justin has wised up a bit. His parents weren't exactly good examples for their son either.

  7. I tell you honest, in Bieber's version and in the Kingdom's version, I cannot even understand the lyrics until they get to the chorus. They are trying to be too breathy and creative and not enunciating clearly. But Mayven's version I could get all the lyrics. And you are right. It's a good song! For the fact I understand them clearer and the music in the video is more to my liking, I chose Mayven for the win.

Anyhoo, I have to go with Mayven because it is calmer. I laughed at the first video...her reaction and I am the same. 12. Lee, You're right Justin Bieber is quite talented. A lot of his songs really aren't my style, but I can't deny he has a gifted voice. I don't know much about his personal life, but judging by some of his music vids questions pop in my mind about what kind of judgement he has. Putting that aside, I listened to his music vid. I couldn't stand watching it with all those tattoo, street thug looking guys in it. This is just who I am. I expect more out of people and they seem to be like sheep following a trend. Oh yeah...back to the song, I actually liked the song. So thanks for the introduction. Next the battle contenders. I bet you know who I'm going with even before I say, right? Kingdoms was all bad. I'm not a punk rock fan, but gave it a chance. The instrumentals were louder than the vocals, but the singing was tolerable. What turned me against Kingdoms was the growling! Honestly, you either love it or hate it and I definitely do not like that quality ever. It sounds evil and I simply can't enjoy the song. Okay, Kingdoms not getting my vote obviously. Mayven was a total contrast from their rival. Really clever idea you had pitting two different styles. Mayven's soft, romantic quality caressed my heart and soul with tenderness. Need I say more? Mayven gets my vote hands down! Totally interesting battle!

    1. Cathy, I honestly don't know much of anything about Bieber's earlier music so I can't say much about him. I can only comment on the reputation he's earned. A couple years ago when I learned that one of my granddaughters was enamored with Bieber, I suggested to my daughter that he wasn't a very good role model so I think they discouraged her from watching his videos.

As far as the video, I'm not sure what the interpretation of the dance crew is, but it seems to have something to do with drug addiction as far as I can tell which accounts for the tattooed thug-looking guys. Most of the videos from the album aren't like this in their imagery. I'm not sure who choreographed the dances, but I doubt whether Bieber had too much to do with it.

I'm not a fan of growling, but in the context used here I think it was more in the sense of parody and fun judging from the expressions on the singers' faces. But I understand the matter of taste.

      Thanks for the great comment.

Interesting that you chose a Beiber song. I never really paid much attention to him... Glad to hear that you are finding something there to appreciate. His off-stage antics have made me lose respect for him. I can't take him seriously as a musician when he acts like such an ass otherwise...

    1. Michele, "growling" is an appropriate term for the style of "singing". I was told this was what it was called by a guy I know whose son played in a heavy metal Christian band. I couldn't comprehend how this was something that belonged in Christian music, but apparently it's popular with a certain segment of younger music fans.

I had been disturbed by what Justin Bieber had been doing that was making the news. I like the message he is trying to convey in this newer album, but I hope he can actually live it.

  15. Before we get into this actual battle, I want to say just a few things about Justin Bieber. That kid has a lot of talent and tenacity. I remember seeing something a while ago about how hard he went after a music career as a teenager (not many teens have that sort of perseverance or confidence or hard outer shell to take the number of "Nos" he got and keep on going). The hard part about achieving success as a child star is that you're a child. Other people define you. Worse, you don't have a real sense of who you are yet as an artist or where you're going. It's so easy to become pigeon-holed into something or someone you don't want to be. (Take Miley Cyrus who has experienced this exact same thing and done this 360 to prove she isn't a child... only to prove that sticking out your tongue all the tongue isn't attractive and there are certain things you shouldn't do with foam fingers onstage... or anywhere).

But, my point is that Justin Bieber is emerging as a man who is getting to choose who he is going to be as an artist. This break-up with Selena, while extremely painful for him, may provide him with some of the best life experience/writing material of his life. He can decide to brand himself in the manner he chooses from this point forward. I really like this song. I like what he's doing with this other artist. I think that he's gaining positive momentum and will very likely reinvest himself in a positive way, appealing to more than just the teeny bopper crowd. I look forward to seeing what happens to him and his career in the future.

Now, the battle. I really liked the version by Mayven. So much so that I listened twice. I think I might add it to the playlist on my phone. Thanks for sharing, Lee!!!

    Are you ready?... You sure?

Well, take 8 deep breaths anyway, as you might need 'em (I know I did).

BIEBER... I don't know nuttin' about him except that little girls love him and everyone else hates him. I don't know why. I've heard he's apparently done and said some stupid things that make people despise him, but I don't know ONE SINGLE THING he's done or said that was negatively received / perceived. I don't even have TV service and I pay LESS THAN ZERO attention to today's celebrities / pseudo-celebrities / Reality TV Show stars, etc.

As far as I know, this is the very first Justin Bieber song I've ever heard. I listened to his original recording just so I'd have an idea what he sounds like and what kinds of songs he does because, as I said, until just now, I didn't know the first flippin' thing about this kid other than that - for whatever reasons - he's rich, loved and hated. Period.

So, I was coming into this with a completely open mind, an absolutely clean slate - not a trace of preconceived opinion.

If THAT Bieber recording is at all typical of his style / sound, then all I can say is that it's almost SHOCKINGLY DERIVATIVE & DEVOID OF ORIGINALITY.

Who is it derivative of? Well, who is it NOT derivative of? Any star who's been a hit in the '90s up to May 15, 2016 - male AND female - can be heard in that recording. It was just some White kid doing EVERY POP STAR of the last 2 decades (except for the Crapper Rappers). I've heard that song in one way or another 1,000 times for years. And, yes, it still sounds artificial and boring to me.

[Side Note: I have heard maybe 2 or 3 Taylor Swift songs and I feel the exact same way about her. Her popularity is mystifying because there is not one single original idea in ANY of her songs, that I've heard. She's just rehashing stuffs that'd been done for years prior to her arrival. If Bieber's 'THE FEELING' is any indication, then he's nothing more than the male version of Swift. Totally unoriginal "manufactured, packaged, and shipped" products for mass consumers.]

I felt completely ambivalent about the KINGDOMS version. Didn't like it, didn't hate, didn't have any opinion of it... until the Heavy Metal Growling started. When that (also completely unoriginal touch) was added, I turned the video off at 3:06.

And by the way, I did NOT find Macy's facial expressions to be the least bit "precious". What they were was CONTRIVED! Because if she really found that growling to be so distasteful, so hard to bear, so unlistenable, then guess what! The song would have been re-recorded sans growling. That was just more manufactured packaging for the consumers.

I'm voting for the two girls in MAYVEN. Their cover bored me, but at least I made it to the end with ambivalent feelings intact.

I'm sure glad you appreciate honest opinions on your blog, because I always give mine. (Believe it or not, however, my honest opinions are NOT unfiltered. I DO filter my real feelings in an effort to tone down the 100%-ness so as not to make permanent enemies. If I ever spilled all of my real thoughts, I'd be chased to an island... or the edge of a cliff, whichever came first.

  19. In all of music, there's no genre I completely hate - and no artist I dislike totally. Seriously, I can find something I like everywhere and with everyone. I'll give anything a listen.

Justin Bieber is no exception; I think he has a good voice and the kid can dance. When JB was just beginning, he was on that "Shaq versus..." show and he seemed so young but really talented. The Shaq dance-off was hilarious. THAT is the Bieber I remember when I see people dogging him. The mama in me thinks "but he is just a kid..."
    (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlafCAzFm7M)

I'm not sure why his antics have turned the public against him (in the face of what some of our politicians do...but I can't go there) but I tend to believe that it's just the nature of people to be fickle. The media raises their icons high and then they tear them down. Does this guy exhibit the best judgement in the world? Does ANYONE? None of us know him personally; who knows. But he is a very young person with a solid catalog and I don't think we've heard the last of him.

But, I'm Biebering too much! Of the two contenders, I really like Mayven. Lately, I've liked the soft, calming vocals in a lot of songs and I found that one fit the bill for me.

Sure, he has some talent, but his music is unimaginative (McCarthy is right), and he is a spoiled brat. He is the Johnny Manzel of pop/hip hop. Talented, but wasted... in more ways than one.

I am like you, and have recently joined on the belieber band wagon. In fact, I have another of his songs in an upcoming battle.

Being from Idaho (I now live in Oregon) I was curious about this metal band, Kingdoms. It's not often bands from Idaho get mention, so I thought about doing a post on them - but I'm having a difficult time finding any information about them.

At any rate.. please give my vote to Kingdoms

    1. Mary, I also had a difficult time finding much about Kingdoms, however seeing as how one of their members commented on this post I think they might be pretty accessible if you wanted to contact them. I'm sure they'd like more exposure.

  25. Interesting to hear your take on Justin Bieber. I've ignored him just because of his antics, but recently heard a song (not sure which one now) I really liked so I glanced at the car radio's digital display and was surprised to see Bieber's name. Now with your comments, I'll have to check out more of his music.

    1. Patricia, I have been somewhat disgusted by Bieber's antics and never paid any attention to his music since it didn't seem like something I'd care for. The Bieber song you heard might have been "Love Yourself". I've been hearing that one played a lot lately in different places. If you check out more of his music you should watch the Purpose: The Movement video as it's pretty darn good--especially if you appreciate dance.

  26. I'm not a Belieber but I do like the other Justin. Timberlake performed at the Euorvision Song Contest this year, which I believe aired in the US for the first time this year. He brought the show alive. Absolutely fantastic performer. He owned that stage and had my full attention. I was in awe at his talent and confidence (without being pretentious) AND he was so courteous and encouraging to the other performers.

    1. Nicola, Timberlake has had better guidance in his life and career. I'm not overly familiar with Timberlake's work though I've heard more than what Bieber has done and he seems like a pretty talented guy to me.

  29. Wow, that was a surprise. The Justin Beiber connection is an immediate turn off, but I gave a listen to the singers battling. My vote goes to Mayven, even though I didn't really care for either of them. The hard rock stuff is just noise to me! Although, I loved Macy's reaction -it was mine too!

  34. Truth be told I don't see anything talented about Beiber. He seems to be a pretty solid package, bought and sold, down to his stupid antics off stage. Just another 'pop tart' as far as I'm concerned. This song does nothing to change my mind.

I didn't make it through the heavy metal version. I did listen up to and through the growling, mainly to see the 'precious' expression. I just don't get it...any of it. The growling - while that may be a signature move in heavy metal today, it didn't seem to have any place in this song. The expression of the female singer - if she was so turned off, why did she allow the video/recording to be released? Did she really not expect that from this band? I'm confused, or at least not as dumb as I look.

The Mayven version was kind of boring, but at least more appropriate for this type of song. So, give them my vote.

    1. FAE, I think the metal version was intended as almost tongue in cheek judging from the facial expressions of the guys. My guess is that Macy was playing the part and this was not something that just happened and happened to be caught on camera. She was playing a role. At least that's how it comes across to me. Just show biz antics--nothing to be confused about.

It's difficult for many of us to accept new music and admit anything good about it. But it's all just opinion as well. There's plenty that other people think is great that I have to wonder what it is they see in it. Personal taste, that's all.

  36. I love finding new artists I was unaware of. Bieber is a good singer, granted; but he really isn't "all that". Not to me. I don't know about settling down though. These kids that make it big when they are very young, then start having growing pains and become a little wild or rebellious - I don't get the public fascination. Middle class kids do the same stuff, but with less money and hopefully less notoriety. Cut them a break while they are growing up in the public eye.

As for this battle, poor Macey. She was so serious, putting her heart and soul into this song; the Kingdoms singer seemed to be just waiting to "shock" her. Too funny. Loved the vocal pairing of these two, but, I wasn't impressed.

I liked Mayven right off though. I liked her version even better than Bieber. Give my vote to the pretty girl Mayven :)

I wondered if "Love Yourself" was about Selena, but he seems too obsessed with her for the F-you content to that song. I did like the line "My mama don't like you and she likes everyone . ." Says a lot about how rebellious that particular relationship was.

    1. Dolorah, Everything I've read about the Purpose album indicates that it is primarily about Bieber's break-up with Selena. Most people tend to go through a range of emotions and attitudes in a situation like that and the cycle of songs in this collection illustrates this well I think.

But yeah, young people can do really stupid things celebrity or not. A lot of adults get self-righteous and forget about their own antics or those of their friends back in younger days. It's the old pot calling the kettle black thing.

  37. I was prepared to like either version, or even both, because—hey, anything that's *not* Bieber is an improvement :D But, alas, this Battle opened up my eyes and made me realize that the reason I don't like Bieber is because I don't like his music. Sure, he's made an ass out of himself offstage and all, but so have a ton of musicians I adore. I mean, it's about the music, not about the person, right? So... Nah. Neither of these versions felt like something I'd like to listen to again. But the Kingdoms felt sufficiently like a parody to win me over. So my vote goes to them.

    Fun battle, Lee.

Of the two provided I'm going to go with Mayven. Like Macy in the video above, I have an aversion to being shouted at when I'm trying to listen to a rousing ditty.

It's a bit too soft adult contemporary for my tastes, but I did listen to a lot of that type of music on the radio as a teenager and in my early twenties. It's softer and more palatable to the ears.

    1. SBBB6, his own actions are certainly the biggest factors in his future, but I challenge anyone to be constantly bombarded with fans, paparazzi, media, and everyone else trying to get a piece of the guy. The money might be enviable to most of us, but Bieber is following in the footsteps of many others who were faced with these same challenges. Personally I have no idea what this might be like nor do most of us, but under the circumstances he is probably doing rather well so far. Not that I condone any of his dumb actions, but I'll give him credit for the positive accomplishments he has achieved with his craft. I sure many will disagree with my assessment of his talents and achievements, but let those naysayers show me what they have done in comparison. The future will tell the whole story and Bieber has a way to go. I hope he matures and gets serious about the example he sets for his young fans. He will either keep getting bigger and better or he'll end up a has been or another dead star.

    2. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about this, as with many other things.

Many people deal with challenges in their lives and still manage to live honorably. His challenges are certainly not the toughest ones life can hand you. And sure, other pop stars have stumbled along the way (Cyrus, Spears) but others are just great people that are not jackasses (Swift, Timberlake).

Bieber has some talent... but let's not get carried away. There are MANY MANY pop stars with more talent that also handle fame better. I don't need to listen more to know that I don't like his music OR his style very much. I have listened to his music. I am not myopic. This is not prejudice, not short-sightedness that is cured through more exposure. My taste is simply different, apparently, than yours.

I vote with my wallet. I own (and some folks would not agree here either) at least 5 Taylor Swift CDs. I liked her when she was pop-country, and I like her now as straight pop. I bought the last TImberlake CD. I do not own any Bieber music.

      Delete
    3. These days if voting comes from my wallet then I'm not voting for music. My votes go to paying the bills. About the only music I listen to these days is what I currently have in my collection (rarely do I listen) or YouTube (mostly for BOTB posts).

I can't say anything about any of Bieber's music other than the Purpose album which I guess is mostly available on YouTube. I'm surprised by how much I've been enjoying it, but then again I don't listen to too much pop music so I don't know how it compares over all. I do like it though and there's nothing at all wrong with that.
