This Is Me--2024 A to Z Theme

My A to Z Themes in the past have covered a range of topics and for 2024 the theme is a personal retrospective that I call "I Coulda Been" which is in reference to my job and career arc over my lifetime. I'll be looking at all sorts of occupations that I have done or could have done. Maybe you've done some of these too!

Tumble 4 Ya!

From Nicki Elson (click link for other participants)
Post a picture, video, or whatever of the celebrity you most tumbled for in the 80s---along with your feeble justifications, of course. ;) Or, since it's come to our attention that there are, in fact, persons roaming the planet who weren't of crushing age during the 80s, which 80s star most makes you tumble now?  Jon Bon Jovi, perhaps? Christie Brinkly? Or were you more the ambiguous Boy George type?

I'll Tumble for You

I tend not to fall for celebrities and have crushes.   Not even in the 80's when I was a bit younger than I am now.  But there were a few that were my favorites and I'd sometimes think about them for more than a second or so.

Irene Cara--  I really liked her in the movie
FAME.  The song that she sang in FLASH DANCE is so upbeat.

Olivia Newton John -- She always seemed so pure and wholesome.   I liked her in GREASE and other movies that she was in.  I also liked her music.

Amy Grant--She was pretty young then and she probably looks the best of my choices now.

Jane FondaJane Fonda (Image via RottenTomatoes.com)Jane Fonda-- My wife and sister used to work out to her exercise tapes while I looked at the picture of Jane on the cassette cover.  From what I've seen of her lately, she still looks pretty good.

Luba Kowalchyk--She was a singer from Canada.  She was a rocker who I used to listen to a lot.

Lisa Dalbello--Another singer from Canada who could really rock excellently.  She was very attractive and  her music was cutting edge.   If you watch any of her YouTube videos I think you'll see what I'm saying.  Check out "Gonna Get Close to You"--man, that's 80's.

But I suppose if I would have had a  celebrity crush at that time it would have been Pat Benatar.    I guess I had a thing for rocker girls.  "Love Is A Battlefield" is a video that I still like to watch.  There's just something about Pat Benatar that I liked.

  1. Olivia Newton-John is just a wow in my opinion and Pat Benatar has always been cool in my books too, she's awesome!

  2. I remember Irene Carla only because my daughter used to dance to the music of fame,
I was more into the 60s music and the eighties was busy rearing the children.

    Have a good week-end.
    Yvonne.

  4. All worthy choices at least the ones I know. I love "Love Is A Battlefield too.

  5. So while your wife and sister exercised, you just sat and stared at Jane? That's hilarious!

  6. Olivia Newton John was one of my finalist as well. Excellent choice!! :)

  7. I loved Irene Cara and both Fame and Flashdance. Pat Benatar was always so cool and I remember watching her videos and wishing I could be as cool as she was. Fun post! :)

  8. One of my favourites (if not The favourite) was Peter Falk in his role of Columbo the bumbling but insightful detective. I loved everythng about him; his rumpled trench coat, his beat up old car and his habit of turning back with that one question designed to shake up the criminal mind. "Oh, just one more question."

  10. It's interesting to hear what women the men thought were attractive back then. I was too busy crushing on the guys to notice! :)

  11. Yeah, that Lisa Dalbello bit was DEFINITELY '80S - you ain't kiddin', McBOIDMAN!

Me, I was pretty much always a Boy George boy. (Hmmm... Had I ever mentioned before that I'm gay?)

  12. Pat Benatar was also one of my nearly-rans in my post.

    Great choice!

  13. Matt Waffles-- Olivia was the ultimate girl next door.

Yvonne -- I'm probably prefer the music of the 60s and 70s overall, but I kept up with music in the 80s unlike now.

    Miranda-- Olivia is talented.

Rek -- I watched that "Love Is A Battlefield" video so many times and never tired of it.

Alex -- Jane looked so nice in that leotard.

D.L. -- I guess there are a lot of Olivia fans out there.

Julie -- Pat was cool and cute.

Delores -- I never watched "Columbo" except for a few times, but I could identify with his character. Did you ever see Falk in the German film Wings of Desire? He does essentially the same role.

Jeremy -- I'll have to admit there was a certain element of oddness to the 80s.

Susan -- Yeah, I don't know why but I was more into the women and still am.

    StMc -- You're a gay mouse?

    Timothy -- Go Pat!

  14. Oh my - the hair on that newswoman from the video! Doesn't get much bigger than that. You've got an interesting mix of women you thought about for more than two seconds. Sandy in Grease was my heroine - I knew every word to Hopelessly Devoted.

Thanks for playing along, Arlee! See you Monday for Origins :)

  15. I loved Fame. What a great list of women. I remember everyone dressing in Flash Dance and Pat Benetar inspired fashions.

  16. Nice list. I forgot about Amy Grant...I used to love her too. Olivia Newton John was the bomb!

  17. Great choices. I was a big Amy Grant and Pat Benatar fan. I really want to listen to some eighties' music right now!

  18. ONJ is great!

Lee, I also love your new banner. Very nice, good sir.

  19. I wanted to be like Olivia Newton John when I was younger. I played the Physical album over and over again. And I used to roller skate in my basement to the Xanadu album.

  20. Sounds like you sure did have a thing for rocker gals! And Jane Fonda was adorable back then. One of my favorite movies with her is Cat Ballou!

I was a little kid in the 1980s but I do remember really liking Eric from The Little Mermaid! According to my parents, I was enamored with diver Greg Louganis during the 1988 Summer Olympics, but I don't remember that one since I was only 2, LoL!

  21. Oh, dang you, McBOIDMAN, you stole my thunder!

I was already planning to work the "mouse" angle into my response to whatever your reply was going to be. (I figured I'd just run with the insane imagery for awhile, but you done cut me short.)

    Happy mice, gotta love 'em!

POSTSCRIPT: I was going to say "Flock Of Seagulls" first, but then I couldn't resist the "Boy George boy" line.

  22. Nicki -- The Sandy at the start of Grease was delightfully saccharine.

M Pax-- I was working in theater during the 80s and Fame was a big favorite.

Tracy Jo-- Amy Grant captivated the Christian market at that time.

Christine -- Yeah! Some 80s music would sound good right now.

Suze -- Our fellow A to Z co-host Jeremy is responsible for my new banner.

Susan O-- "Physical" is a great song.

Laura -- Jane Fonda was in her 40s during the 1980s and she looked outstanding. Cat Ballou was from 1965 and she was nearly 30 when she made that film!

StMc -- It's appropriate that you had Flock of Seagulls as a postscript. Does anyone listen to them anymore? What were some of their songs anyway?

  27. I lipsynched to Pat Benatar all the time as a kid! She was such a cool rocker girl! I've seen her twice in concert since then. Her voice is amazing.

  29. Carol-- The 80s seem so long ago and yet was like yesterday in some ways.

Susan G/K-- Pat was indeed high energy and fun.

Jemi -- I've got a lot of listening memories from these ladies.

Ella -- I'll be over to check your A to Z post.

  31. I obviously didn't have a crush on any of these lovely ladies, but I do remember Olivia Newton-John in Grease.

  32. You've probably seen it but if not, you MUST watch this Jane Fonda interview with Stephen Colbert. It's one of the few times when he clearly lost control of an interview and the results are absolutely precious:

  33. Nancy Wilson of Heart was fantastically hot...and a little earlier in time I thought Suzi Quatro was a good time waiting to happen. Her eyes...very sexy. Check her out:

  34. Fame was a pretty cool movie that was the inspiration for Glee, Smash and the like. And I liked a bunch of Benatar songs. Basically, it's really charming to hear guys talk about crushes. It's a rare event. I'm in the blogfest, hopping over to say hi. (I'm Idea City).

  35. I had me a thing for Michael Jackson during his 'Thriller' era. I think I watched that video over a hundred times back when you had to rent it at the video store. Good thing my friends Mom worked at one.
The weirdest thing is that I would never admit my thing for MJ, but it was totally obvious what with my room full of posters and my MJ peechees.
By the late 80's it was all about Bryan Adams. Went to several of his concerts including the one at the Gorge in George- awesome venue. Still kinda' have a thing for him even now...
Lastly, I must add that my mother attended high school with Ann and Nancy Wilson. :)

  37. Jennifer -- Some of my favorite musical artists are Canadian.

Carol-- Surely you would like Lisa Dalbello.

Squid -- Fun interview. Jane's not bad at all for her age.

Chuck -- I never listened to Suzi Quatro back then but she does rock.

Catherine -- Like I said in my blog bit I was not prone to crushes so much but there were women I could appreciate greatly.

Jasmine -- "Thriller" is one of the all time great music videos and Michael was a hugely talented guy.

    Stephen -- Love watching Pat.

  42. When I was a kid, I wished I could be Olivia Newton John in the 70s and 80s. I used to sing along to Grease, Xanadu, and Let's Get Physical Albums.

  43. TF -- I guess I was in my 20s when ONJ first came on the scene and I liked her from the start.

Rebecca -- I first saw Grease in the theater and have watched it many times since.

Pam - I don't remember Ant's shorts, but I guess it wouldn't have had that much effect on me.

    Buck -- I'm sure I've seen her, but I don't remember Phoebe.

L.Diane -- Getting a lot of reaffirmations for Olivia.

Theresa- I never wanted to be Olivia, but I sure admired her and her music.
